Book Description

One of the first events of decolonization in the twentieth century, the Great Partition of 1947 was also one of the most bloody. In this sweeping reappraisal of India’s liberation from British rule and the emergence of Pakistan, Yasmin Khan uncovers the recklessness of the Partition plan, its catastrophic human toll, and the unshakable animosity left in its wake.

A well written book on the whole. This book takes a relatively unusual tack, in that it does not focus very much on the 'great leaders' of those times, but focusses a bit more on what happened on the ground, so to speak. It is the telling of an awful tale, a tale in which hundreds of thousands were killed and mutilated; a tale of the times when millions were displaced.People do not often think that freedom can sometimes be an awful thing, and this is exactly what it must have been for many. What could have made the book stand out, for me, is if she had analysed the factors - and the effects - of the social transformation of the time. People identified themselves with their region, and not so much along religious lines. This changed. There are lessons in this, which we would do well to remember.

One of the more sizeable holes in my knowledge of twentieth-century history concerns the partitioning of the British Raj -- the dividing up of the British colonial territory on the Indian subcontinent into two countries, Pakistan and India (and, later, yet a third, Bangladesh). To address my ignorance, I turned to this book, THE GREAT PARTITION: THE MAKING OF INDIA AND PAKISTAN, written by a professor at Oxford. I learned a lot, but can't say that I am wholly satisfied with the book.THE GREAT PARTITION contains the basic facts: In 1946 and 1947, Great Britain, worn out and broke after World War II, abandoned the Raj; it cut its losses and ran. On June 3, 1947, it announced that the Raj would be partitioned and the constituent parts would be given their independence ten weeks hence, on August 15, 1947. As matters developed the lines of partition were not released until August 17, two days after the independence (and simultaneous birth) of India and Pakistan. Before partition, there had been widespread violence, primarily Muslims against Hindus and vice versa, but some of it involved Sikhs. That violence intensified after August 15th, and ethnic cleansing was conducted in many areas. One of the largest migrations in history ensued -- Muslims within the territory of India fleeing to East or West Pakistan, and Hindus fleeing from the two areas of Pakistan to India. About twelve million people were displaced. Hundreds of thousands died, in some accounts as many as a million.Britain's drawing of national boundaries, on both the east and west of what became India (a total of 3,800 miles of border determination), was hasty and arbitrary. The imperial mapmaker, Cyril Radcliffe, had never been to India before he arrived on July 8th, and in six weeks he and his assistants had finished the job. Their line drawing was done remotely, working with maps and dubious census figures. It seems farcical. One might naturally wonder whether an alternative to Partition was ever explored. The answer, as I learned from the book, is yes. In May 1946, a high-level British "Cabinet Mission" presented a plan that would have devolved power to Muslims within a united India. There would have been a central government to handle matters of foreign affairs and defense, but otherwise individual provinces would have enjoyed considerable autonomy, including the ability to join together on certain matters, thereby allowing large Muslim blocs to act in concert within the Indian Union. But diehards and extremists on both sides of the Muslim/Hindi religious divide rejected the plan, after which the more moderate leaders didn't fight against partition. As Nehru later admitted: "The truth is that we were tired men and we were getting on in years . . . The plan for partition offered a way out and we took it."The book covers all the above and considerably more factual territory. In a way, it packs quite a bit of history into its 210 pages of text. Supplementing that text are a glossary, a timeline, four maps, and about two dozen photographs.Nonetheless, I am not enthusiastic about the book. First, there are problems with the written presentation. Khan's prose is very smooth, but the text seems to have been written in discrete paragraphs, almost as if each was envisioned to stand alone. As a result, there is a choppiness to the presentation and, worse, considerable repetition of many points.Second, I would like to have been given some idea of how things might have been handled differently. Near the end of the book, Khan writes that "[t]here was nothing inevitable * * * about the way that Partition unfolded." But never in the course of the book does she discuss how the former Raj could have become self-governing without hundreds of thousands of deaths, millions of people transplanted, and a continuing state of religiously-based tension and hostility between abutting nations.

This book, by & large, spans a 5 year period from 1946 to 1951. This was the epicenter of partition politics & it's aftermath. Khan marries nuanced history with many personal tales citing not only statistical measures of this mammoth human tragedy but also evoking a sense of tremendous pathos in what continues to affect lives in the subcontinent & politics of it.I found this book a very objective one in that while it tells exacting stories of failures of governmental work (British, Indian & Pakistani) & the way factions, groups & militias contributed to the bloodbath, at no point, I felt that Khan was taking sides.I also felt that there are a couple areas where she might have missed the mark. While 1945-46 was indeed the epicenter of partition politics, the seed of distrust, both as communal phenomenon sans the politics, & as political phenomenon manifest in the divide between the Congress & the Muslim league, was something that developed over a much longer period of time. I think Khan could have done more to bring this aspect out.Secondly, I think the "open wound", from a Pakistani perspective, is more the India assisted creation of Bangladesh. In political influence, it is certainly more potent than partition in the current state of affairs. So overall, if you're going to read one introductory book on partition, I think this book is a great one. It does enough to set context & tell the larger story. However, the politics of the subcontinent is tangled; often mired in feudal divides, lingual & cultural subgroups & a general hodgepodge of multiple conflicting identities & assertions. I'd recommend reading other books (Pakistan: A hard country, if you're an Indian like me, for one) to begin to grasp the drivers that led to this great divide & its repercussions.

Although I'm not qualified to speak with authority on the subject of this book, I have read fairly extensively in Indian history, and I've traveled widely in Pakistan. This is the only book devoted solely to the Partition that I've read, so I can't make comparisons offered by other reviewers; I will simply note that I found Khan's book to be informative and devoid of nationalist, religious, or racial biases. Long before the British Raj, the Indian Subcontinent had been an ever-changing map of conquest and cobbled empires. A single India has never existed on the multi-ethnic, polyglot Subcontinent, save in the superficial sense of evanescent lines on maps. Nor did Partition succeed in creating more-natural polities: witness the departure of Bangladesh from Pakistan, and great internal discords bounded by the arbitrary Durand and Radcliffe lines.

I was very excited and full of hope when I got this book. I like the information, but the recipes are not easy to follow for someone with chronic pain. The data is good and the book is well organized, BUT the servings on the recipes are not consistent and it takes too much time and effort to make them.I'm the only fibromyalgia patient in my house, nobody else like to eat a gazillion of veggies and roots; and the recipes are for 2, 4, 5, 6 and even 10 servings. Just dividing the ingredients in half is not always an option to make half of the recipe, because the results may differ. So I bought everything as per the book, I spent more than $400 (US) on the shopping list for Week 1 and I barely used half of it. Since everything was fresh, the other half was just wasted. After this, I went back to the reviews and I just realize that most of them where from people who got the book for free and were asked for a review and no from actual patients using the plan. So, if you have a big budget and somebody cooking for you, this book is great! If not, keep searching.

I agree 100% with the review that Mary N. wrote on Sept 15. I have had fibromyalgia for many years and have been able to maintain it somewhat evenly until the last 8 months. This flare up has been dibilitating and I was really hoping this book would guide me onto a better path. However, the plan calls for cooking a new dish nearly every meal, and as mentioned previously, they all have a minimum of 4 servings. I will never make a recipe for breakfast that serves 4, unless it's something I can eat for 4 meals or cut in half and eat for 2 meals. If someone is in that much pain, I do not see how they could cook that many new dishes every day/week. This would be manageable, except there are no directions for substituons or any details about flexibility in the plan. There is no where online to ask questions, no groups, and no support. I thought this would be helpful after reading reviews, but I'm not sure how much I'll actually be using it. I guess no freedom for me.

I returned this because the recipes were just not anything I could see myself cooking. Maybe great for someone else just not me.

Positives:The author proposed essential equipment and provided a grocery list, foods, shopping guide, and symptoms log for Fibromites.Incorporated personal experiences, stories, and useful practices.Introduced the term "mindful eating" in the text.Illustrated Fibromyalgia and related to cooking (very creative!)The author excessed the recommendation, she elaborated in them as well. There were numerous visual words to describe fruits and vegetables to be added to the dietProfessor Lopez encouraged Fibromites to utilize ingredients that are already in the pantry, freezer, and refrigerator.Encouraged very realistic expectations, the author never stated that after the first week, then symptoms will be cured or disappear. She motivates readers to be consistent and patient with symptoms and results. The author gave benefits of following 28 day meal plan. There were tips given on eating out, since there are people that do not always have time to cook (very realistic). The author gave side effects, so people are aware of what to expect when following this meal plan. The author remained positive throughout the text and conveyed that "there is a light at end of the tunnel." She stated to "stay the course and in no time, you will create new habits around foods in this plan."Recipes were organized according to gaining energy, promoting healthy digestion, pain management, and fighting brain fog.Negatives: None :)I look forward to making these recipes!

I found out this is really a meal plan, Relief Plan, Clear Brain Fog, & Fight Fatigue. This cookbook gives you so much information , easy to find things! Biggest thing too is you feel fatigued and it says you have to move and this book gives you examples what to try and what is best for you. I could keep on going but you buy this book. I bought it used and looks new through amazon( 2rd party JVG books , LLC) used like new!!!😋

These recipes were tasty and easy to follow, my suggestion is only buy the minimal ingredients because it's a lot to buy at one time and expensive it'll get bad for the next week you need to use them. but all in all great book to buy.

We have been using this book for over almost two months now, trying all the recipes and following its advice. The recipes are delicious and simple to follow. I can notice and improvement with my digestion and energy.

Still getting used to the recipes so cannot say that I am an expert or having great results yet but it is what is advertised.

Review

"This is an excellent book for experienced Ruby developers to add functional programming paradigms to their toolkit. This book gives excellent examples of blocks, Procs, and lambdas and ways to use them in your existing application."- Jeffrey Holland, Ackmann & Dickenson"I've been a Rubyist for over a decade, and I still learned several new techniques and how to avoid gotchas with Procs, lambdas, and blocks. This book is also perfect for the Ruby/Rails developer who wants to feel confident when consuming or writing libraries that use Ruby's closures.Easy to understand, interesting examples, and a solid reference."- Matthew Margolis, Getty Images"You've probably called methods that take in a block, but if you've not written a method that takes in a block, I highly recommend this book to you. Once you're through with the book, you'll be able to explain how [1, 2, 3].map(&:to_s) works with confidence.I've always been a fan of Benjamin's writing because every concept is always followed up by real-world examples, which makes it easier for the reader to grok the concepts being taught."- Tan Guo Xiang, Civilized Discourse Construction Kit"I never heard Ruby can do closures, but Mastering Ruby Closures brought me from zero to hero in just a few hours! Don't be afraid, and take a look yourself!"- Gábor László Hajba, Zühlke Engineering

This is a great little book on learning closures. Yes, you can probably find everything you learn in this book online for free but you’ll end up spending more time and a lot of effort in piecing together the bits of knowledge. Ben spoon feeds it to you in easy steps. The entire book is only about 75 pages but there are plenty of examples as well as quizzes at the end of each chapter to help you learn the material. You can probably read everything in just an afternoon but it will take you a lot longer to master the topic. This book is most definitely for Rubyists that are intermediate level and up. I for one will be referring and reading this multiple times until the topic becomes more ingrained.

The author does a great job covering the concept of closures and their implication to turn a language, Ruby in this case, that doesn't have traditional function concept into a full blown functional programming language using concepts of lexical scoping, free variables, and lambdas. Many consider OOP and FP as two different programming paradigms. But after reading this book, one might conclude that OOP is merely a specific case of FP, which is far more powerful and expressive

I spent two years visiting podiatrists trying to get pain relief from my plantar's fasciitis. The first one gave me steroid shots in the tendons - apart from being THE most painful shot I've ever had - it did relieve the pain AMAZINGLY well, but it eventually came back. Bought the $500 inserts (not covered by insurance) and wore nothing but tennis shoes. Once the shot wore off I was back at square one. Tried another podiatrist who - irrespective of his being an ass - did nothing for me. I asked for shoe/exercise recommendations and he just told me that if anything hurts, I'm doing more damage. So on chance, I stumbled on this book in the library and read it. A quick, easy read, but filled with common sense suggestions. A month after starting her suggestions on gait training and stretching, I've gotten more relief than in the previous two years under "professional medical care". I'm a real skeptic with non-physicians, so for me to sing the praises of the advice in this book is unheard of. I even went back and bought it just to have it for myself.

I'm a bit biased, because I'm a long time barefooter (I go barefoot everywhere), but this is an excellent entry-level book to anyone who may have a shred of suspicion that their foot pain may be caused by their shoes. Even to those that do not see their shoes as a culprit, you'll learn. ☺ This book keeps its explanations at ground level, only getting technical when necessary to make a point. You should know a little about how your body works if you want to fix it, shouldn't you? Also, there are great exercises to help rebuild muscle and flexibility in probably the most neglected and mistreated part of the human body. If you're like me, and want more detailed explanations with a more comprehensive corrective exercise program, check out Whole Body Barefoot: Transitioning Well to Minimal Footwear, also by Katy Bowman. In fact, if you want the all-over treatment, check out Katy's whole collection of books about restoring strength and flexibility in the most neglected parts of our bodies.

Is a book of good information...but if you have read her book, "Move Your DNA" you have read most of this book too.Has some good stretches & practical information.

I'm only half way through the book but have skimmed thru most of the pages and I am really enjoying the exercises shared and the writing style. I am a massage therapist by trade and like how this is written to be understood, enjoyed and implemented by anyone who can read.

I liked this book so much I decided I needed a kindle and a hard copy. Start doing these exercises and say goodbye to your foot problems. My balance in Yoga has improved so much since I started this foot health plan and removed the “casts” off my feet! As a joke my son refers to Katy as my cult leader. I call her my healer. Keep the awesome info coming Katy!

I developed plantar fasciitis and decided to check this book out. I am now pain free and completely obscessed with Katy Bowman movement information. I've incorporated nutrious movement through out my day and now the pain in my hips and shoulders are improving and I'm getting more flexible. I can not say enough about this book!

Katy Bowman is a real treasure. Biomechanist that can translate piles of info into a readable book for the layperson. EVERYONE should read this book. I have taught a foot health workshop that was inspired by Katy's work (and Jill Miller's Yoga Tune-up Balls and book, "Roll Model").

Great straightforward, easy to follow information and instructions on how to make you feet more mobile and less uncomfortable. This book lacks some of the personality that is apparent in Katys other books but a good investment nonetheless. Worth your time and money.

Firehouse Food: Cooking with San Francisco's Firefighters, by George Dolese

From Publishers Weekly

San Francisco firefighter and chef Chase Wilson wittily sums up her feelings about cooking for her fellow firefighters: "It's putting dinner on the table for 14 that gets my adrenaline going." And with that, authors Dolese (food writer and cookbook photos stylist) and Siegelman (cookbook writer) present meals that can be prepared for either army or family. These recipes, which often reflect the flavor of San Francisco, are as simple as Coleslaw with Pineapple and Dried Cherries (from Marty Verhaeg, Engine 13) or as time-consuming as Pork Mole, which can be prepared two days ahead of time (from Theresa Wolowic, Engine 32). The flavor-intense Villa Gumbo requires a roux and is served by Rich Gibson, whose Station 37, founded in 1915, ranks as one of the oldest. Desserts such as Warm Swiss Almond Apple Cake (from Lt. Richard Busalacchi, Truck 19) round out the recipes. From beginning to end, this accessible cookbook presents an enthusiastic, adrenaline-infused tone perfect for homecooks of any level. This was a Christmas gift for my son, currently receiving a degree in Fire Science. He was thrilled with it and very excited about trying out the recipes. All three of my boys were intrigued with this 'manly' cookbook. The recipes sound absolutely delicious, the book is filled with pictures, ingredients are readily available, prep info is easy to understand and the overall organization of the book is intuitive. My 21 year old is now going to be cooking for the family once a month. What could be better?!Thank you to all the FF who shared their stories, pictures and recipes in this wonderful cook book.

Outdated recipes. Didn’t identify one recipe that I would prepare. I really wanted to use this book but sadly it’s not a keeper.

Delicious food, easy to follow recipes, no weird ingredients. The trifecta of what makes a great cookbook.

After going through this book the first time I had marked a good 50% of the recipes to try, and now I am cooking my way through them. I even bought a second copy of the book for our vacation home since these recipes are easy to prepare and tasty too. Nothing too fancy, and it has recipes that a variety of people will enjoy.

This is one of my favorite go-to cookbooks! Absolutely love the recipes, along with the great photos. Simple home cooking, comfort style food, with a gourmet flair. From a delicious Skillet Paella, wonderful Salads to a Green Chile and Cheese Cornbread. So much variety and plenty to choose from. Thank you, San Francisco Firefighters!

My husband is a SF firefighter and tells me that these recipes get made on a regular basis. My husband is a great cook and enjoys cooking for his fellow firefighters. He also knows that if it's not good he's going to hear about it. When he first started with the department he used this book a lot knowing that the recipes had been tested in the firehouses and became classics. The men and women of SFFD know how to cook and love really good food. If you want to get a sense of what they eat in a real big city firehouse you can't go wrong with this book!

I bought this book because a friend made soup one night and it was spectacular. When I asked where the recipe was from, she showed me this book that she bought down in the City (San Francisco). I quickly picked it up too. It almost makes you want to be a SF Firefighter -- just for the food.Great stuff!

This is a really unique cookbook and it contains some terrific recipes as well as a glimpse of firehouse life. It's also beautifully produced with great photography, simple yet elegant design and excellent quality paper. There's a particularly good recipe and detailed description for making tamales. As for it being "a couple of jakes out for a quick buck", a portion of the profits go to the Surviving Families Fund of San Francisco Firefighters Local 798. A good cause in this firefighter's opinion...

Review

From the reviews: "The book is devoted to public key cryptography, whose principal goal is to allow two or more people to exchange confidential information … . The material is very well organized, and it is self-contained: no prerequisites in higher mathematics are needed. In fact, everything is explained and carefully covered … . there is abundance of examples and proposed exercises at the end of each chapter. … This book is ideal as a textbook for a course aimed at undergraduate mathematics or computer science students." (Fabio Mainardi, The Mathematical Association of America, October, 2008) "This book focuses on public key cryptography … . Hoffstein, Pipher, and Silverman … provide a thorough treatment of the topics while keeping the material accessible. … The book uses examples throughout the text to illustrate the theorems, and provides a large number of exercises … . The volume includes a nice bibliography. … Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduate through professional collections." (C. Bauer, Choice, Vol. 46 (7), March, 2009) "For most undergraduate students in mathematics or computer science (CS), mathematical cryptography is a challenging subject. … it is written in a way that makes you want to keep reading. … The authors officially targeted the book for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students. I believe that this audience is appropriate. … it could even be used with students who are just learning how to execute rigorous mathematical proofs. … I strongly believe that it finds the right tone for today’s students … ." (Burkhard Englert, ACM Computing Reviews, March, 2009) "The exercises and text would make an excellent course for undergraduate independent study. … This is an excellent book. Hoffstein, Pipher and Silverman have written as good a book as is possible to explain public key cryptography. … This book would probably be best suited for a graduate course that focused on public key cryptography, for undergraduate independent study, or for the mathematician who wants to see how mathematics is used in public key cryptography." (Jintai Ding and Chris Christensen, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2009 m)

Good start to this topic. The only hiccup was that I tried to work through the text example myself and came up with different answers. This is because the text was wrong. There is an extensive errata file that you can get online. May sure you get it before starting to work through text examples and end-of-chapter exercises. I hope that a revised version is issued that corrects these errata.

Good introduction to intermediate level coverage of math-based crypto, however, I found the text hard to follow because the cross references were hard to look up. E.g. a back reference to proposition x.y is hard to look up bec propositions are somewhat sparse and each chapter x is very large -- so you find yourself thumbing through the chapter trying to find propositions to get your bearing. It really interferes with the reading process. Including a page number would help greatly. (For more purely math books, this isn't as large of an issue bec there are so many propositions and theorems that it's easy to isolate the back reference -- but for this text, it is quite difficult.)

At least for the chapters that were studied by this reviewer, the authors of this book give an effective introduction to the mathematical theory used in cryptography at a level that can be approached by an undergraduate senior in mathematics. The field of cryptography is vast of course, and a book of this size could not capture it effectively. The topics of primary importance are represented however, and the authors do a fine job of motivating and explaining the needed concepts. The authors give an elementary overview of elliptic curves over the complex numbers, and most importantly over finite fields whose characteristic is greater than 3. The case where the characteristic is equal to 2 is delegated to its own section. In discussing the arithmetic of elliptic curves over finite fields, the authors give a good motivation for Hasse's formula, which gives a bound for the number of points of the elliptic curve (over a finite field), but they do not go into the details of the proof. The Hasse formula is viewed in some texts as a "Riemann Hypothesis" for elliptic curves over finite fields, and was proven by Hasse in 1934. This reviewer has not studied Hasse's proof, but a contemporary proof relies on the Frobenius map and its separability, two notions that the authors do not apparently want to introduce at this level of book (however they do introduce the Frobenius map when discussing elliptic curves over F2). Separability is viewed in some texts in elliptic curves as more of a technical issue, which can be ignored at an elementary level. It arises when studying endomorphisms of elliptic curves of fields of non-zero characteristic, and involves defining rational functions. The Frobenius map is not separable, and this fact allows one to show that its degree is strictly greater than the number of points in its kernel. Taking the nth power of the Frobenius map and adding to it the endomorphism which simply multiplies elements by -1, one can show that the number of points of the elliptic curve is equal to the degree of this endomorphism. Just a few more arithmetical calculations establishes Hasse's estimate. Some more of the highlights of this part of the book: - The reminder that the fastest known algorithm to solve the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem takes p^1/2 steps for a finite field Fp (i.e. the algorithms therefore are not really better than "black box" algorithms).- The brief historical discussion on public key cryptography.- The motivational discussion for the Lenstra algorithm using simple calculations that leads to a failed attempt to find the reciprocal of an integer modulo p. This failure is used to explain the workings of the Lenstra elliptic curve factorization algorithm in a way that it is better appreciated by the reader.- The discussion on the Frobenius map in the context of elliptic curves over F2 and its use in finding the number of points of an elliptic curve over a finite field.- The motivational discussion for the use of distortion maps, due to the degeneracy of the Weil pairing. The distortion maps are used to define a modified Weyl pairing, which is proved to be non-degenerate.Some omissions:- Algorithms used to calculate the number of points of an elliptic curve over a finite field that are more efficient than brute-force counting or estimation using Hasse's formula.- The proof that the torsion points of order m can be written as the product of two cyclic groups of order m. The authors apparently do not want to get into the notions of unramified and separable "isogenies" between elliptic curves and Galois extensions, both of which are used in the proof that they reference. Isogenies are mentioned in a footnote to the discussion on distortion maps, since the latter are isogenies.- The proof verifying certain properties of divisors, namely that they are equal if the corresponding rational functions are constant multiples of each other, and that the degree of a divisor is zero if its sum is the zero element of the elliptic curve. The proofs were no doubt omitted due to their dependence on techniques from algebraic geometry.- Quantum cryptography. This is discussed very briefly in the last chapter, but the subject is mature enough to be presented at the undergraduate level.- Cryptography based on non-Abelian groups. One good example would be cryptography based on the mathematical theory of knots and braids (the braid group is non-Abelian), even though this approach is in its infancy at the present time, and in almost all cases shown to be highly vulnerable to attacks. It could have been included in the last chapter or possibly as a long exercise.- Hyperelliptic curves are discussed very briefly in the last chapter, but a full-fledged presentation could be done in the book without missing the targeted audience. Hyperelliptic curves are also mentioned after the discussion of the MOV algorithm, wherein the authors allude to the use of Weil descent to transfer the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem to a discrete logarithm problem in a finite field F2^m when m is composite. The authors correctly don't want to elaborate on Weil descent in any more detail, since it requires a solid knowledge of field extensions and theory of algebraic varieties at a level that one obtains in a graduate course in algebraic geometry. Suffice it to say that the strategy of Weil descent involves finding a cover of the elliptic curve by a hyperelliptic curve that is defined over the extension of the ground field. This approach has been shown to be problematic for Koblitz curves, the latter of which are discussed in the book.Note: This review is based on a reading of chapters 5 and 8 of the book.

I used this book to teach a class of math and computer science majors. The book is great. It covers major topics; RSA, El-Gamal. Elliptic Curves, Lattice Based Cryptography. The systems are described and important attacks on the mathematical underpinnings are given in detail. The necessary mathematics is developed. Many homework problems on which the reader can practice are another strength. The students have expressed how much they get from the book. I highly recommend it.

I'm doing my honor's thesis on theoretical Cryptography as an undergrad at Colby College, and this book has been the perfect resource. It is so clear, and many time teaches by using easy to understand concrete examples. This book is the perfect place to start if you want to learn about Crypto.

This 500+ pages book is very nice and deals with the Mathematical point of view with many explanations, but one will always neeed an additional support book of Algebra such as Topics in Algebra by I. N. Herstein (LC 74-82577) to fully grasp all the related Math fundamentals.

Solid, introductory text for those familiar with abstract algebra, discrete mathematics and the like — and even those who are not.. and I’m the latter.

It is for undergrads, but useful at grad level to any student who didn't take the courses as an undergrad (i.e., fresh grad students discovering their love to cryptography)
