I don't normally write reviews even negative ones. However I thought this was pretty important to mention in my opinion. I purchased this map in May with intentions to use it in August. That is exactly what I did.I used this map while backpacking in Zion National Park. The map itself was of good quality, sturdy and durable. During one of my hikes in the wilderness (while using this for navigation) I sensed something was wrong when the backing sites I was passing were not lining up with the sites listed on the map. Fortunately I was using that map in conjunction with maps provided by the park and was able to determine which map was out of date. Which was the NatGeo map.After I finished my hike, I walked into the Zion National Park Visitor Center Gift shop and looked at the NatGeo Maps that they sell. Their map was accurate and the backpacking sites on the map were the same as the park maps. So that would tell me that this seller on amazon is selling outdated maps.

Convenient, with good quality paper that can survive getting wet.Unfortunately some of the less-popular trails aren't quite accurate. There were a few locations where trails were shown clearly crossing rivers, but the current trail always stayed to one side of the river. That initially made navigation once a pain, but after we learned to not fully trust the map, things went fine.Still, probably the best map I could have gotten out-of-state, while still being high quality + water resistant/water proof.

These maps always rock. Tear resistant and water proof with great detail on trails and roads. I do wish this particular map covered a bit more of the peripheral area of the park. We need another map to get around well.

Love NGM maps as they are so detailed and helpful for hiking, etc. Purchase them for all the planned vacations as they are full of information and correspond nicely with hiking books and hiking programs like All Trails.

The map is great in it's detail and its durability, but it's not really any better than the free one they'll give you at the park entrance.When I went to Bryce Canyon and Zion Nation Parks last year, I bought the National Geographic maps ahead of time and they helped me plan out the hikes to do at each. Both of those maps had pretty good descriptions for most of the hiking trails (length, height, level of difficulty, condition/type of trail, what to expect to see, time you should expect to take.) We were able to plan ahead which trails to take, which 2 could be done in the same day, and in what order to do them in. It was great.So, when we were planning out next hiking trip (that included going to Redwood, Mount Rainier, Olympic, Crater Lake, and Mount St. Helen), we immediately ordered this map to help us plan. This time around we had to not only figure out what trails to do in each park but compare the trails of all the parks to help us figure out how to split 2 weeks between 5 parks. We thought that all the maps would have the same info for the hiking trails as Zion & Bryce Canyon had. They don't. This map was useless for the purpose we wanted it. Instead of getting the info from a single reliable source, we had to trust to the internet. This didn't help much. Though there are a lot of posting about the trails, they're all very opinionated instead of factual. They described how beautiful the trail was, but would leave off the trail's length, height, level of difficulty, condition/type of trail, what to expect to see, or time it should take.So if you're looking for hiking info, don't get this map. Just wait until you get there and go right to the info station and talk with a park ranger. It doesn't help planning ahead of time, but it's a lot better than taking the internet's advice.

Informative, but Zion is pretty tame. You can get by with the map they give you at the park. The only additional infor this gives you is the topography and you don’t realllly need it unless you’re doing the backcountry hikes.

Similar to the free map you get at a Ranger Station or WIC, but with more details, contour lines, elevations, trail mileage, and more. Good quality paper stock that can stand up to the rigors of backpacking and resist water and humidity.

I get these National Geographic maps for any location that I am planning on traveling to and I love them. They help me to find hiking locations and sights that I may want to visit.

I read this book just after Reading World Order by Henry Kissinger. Kissinger's book covers the current challenges of the geopolitical landscape, outlining above all the historical and cultural context in which the US and other major powers find themselves. Well, this book offers a similar analysis of the current scene, but although not exclusively, it's main focus is on the geographical, military and some other aspects, mostly the physical resources which define the sources and limits of power for major countries. In the author's view, the US, with unequalled geographic and physical resources is the country which calls the shots in the modern world. The real game-changer is the recent discovery of shale oil in the US wich will give it energy Independence, and will reduce the need for protecting the world's major sea-lanes necessary for world trade to prosper. Up to now it has been in the interest of the US to promote and protect world trade, but that is no longer the case. This means that many countries with lesser resouces as the US ( e.g. Germany, China ) will face serious challenges in retaining their power without the backing of the US navy and enforcement of order. The author points out the countries most vulnerable under the expected new regime, and their alternatives. While I certainly found the book great reading and full of interesting facts and figures, I felt it a little too one-dimensional: i.e. too reliant on geographical, economic, dempographic and physical resources to explain the potential evolution of modern geopolitics. This view is rather deterministic: as if these factors would logically induce countries to act according to their existing natural strengths without other considerations. The historical and cultural aspects stressed by Kissinger, as well as the capacity for shifting alliances, treaties and use of "soft power" ( which the US also posseses abundantly ) . The book also gives little place to the role of modern technology in shaping the world. I am doubtful about the central tenet of Keizan's thesis: that the US would withdraw significantly from policing the major sea-lanes. Even if self-sufficient in almost everything, the US needs to maintain a strong presence everywhere. Kissinger in his book stresses that if the US does not do this it could easily end up as a big island off Eurasia, with little influence in shaping events outside its sphere.and which sooner or later would have serious reverberations on the North-American continent. Having said this, the book is still very good: it brings to light many basic aspects of geography and resources which we usually don't think about in the age of intercontinental ballistic missiles, hi-tech weapons and space exploration, but which are still hugely important in shaping the world. Also, the author manages to build up a very convincing picture of the potential unfolding of the world over the coming decades if countries act according to their geography, their demographic, physical and economic resources, above all, if the US removes its protection of free trade. These factors will bestow unusual power on some, especally the US, and reveal serious vulnerabilities in others, especially countries whose prowess we today consider almost unassailable.

This book was highly educational as well as fun to read, although many of the conclusions and predictions about future world events seem unlikely or suspect. To begin with, I had heard only vaguely about Bretton Woods and never about the U.S. assurance in 1944 that the safety of the world's sea lanes would be guaranteed by our navy. Sounds like a brash promise for one nation to make, especially in the middle of World War II, although Hitler was on the run by then and Japan was getting ready for a suicidal defense of its homeland if the Americans invaded. I learned a LOT about geography (a much-neglected subject in American schools), especially about the importance of river systems, and deep sea ports for countries that would prosper and, eventually, dominate. One could go on for pages praising this book, but this reader has one major nit-pick about a topic the author ignored: the role of climate change (the U.S. is already experiencing its damages, as our bread basket areas of California and the midwest/great plains are suffering increasing drought and subsequent lowered production). If it continues, our natural geographical advantages will wither as we struggle to provide adequate food for our citizens and for much of the world. I also wonder about the effects of increasing terrorism around the world, but It's probably asking too much for a book essentially about geography to cover such a topic. If I were a citizen of Russia, China, Brazil, or India, I would shudder reading the author's predictions about the future prospects of my country. In fact, that comment applies to much of the earth other than the U.S. and a few other countries, some of them surprising. In any event, this is a great, fun read, and I recommend it highly.

The author makes some bold calls based on geographic and ethnic considerations. Whether Russia will disintegrate or Turkey will become a regional power is anybody's guess. As we speak, Turkey faces a major economic crisis and seems to be leaning for help away from its traditional allies.Will the Eurozone break up as he predicts? The Euro has been largely a peace project and the benefits have been enormous when we consider closer European integration during an unprecedented 70 years of peace in Europe.The author lists the geographical, natural resources arguments that make the USA have a comparative advantage. However, does the USA desire to become an island simply because it can?I give it to the author that he sticks his neck out and tries to rationalize his predictions. We do not know whether these will come to pass and so I give it a 3 based on the arguments rather the outcomes. Some predictions have been wrong already.

Written in bursts of poetic description, this book is a fast, enjoyable yet somewhat disturbing read. I am traveling to Spain next month to busk on the streets with my kids and husband so the descriptions of Spain and especially of his experience busking on the streets there intrigued me. The author's observations seem insightful and believable, but I never grew to trust in the honor of his character when it came to women. For me, his almost nightly drunkeness, his staring at the breasts of the daughter of his host for one night, his describing young girls as "sexily confident", his visit to the brothel, his lusting after women, his describing so many things in the natural world as voluptuous,and his inaction when a mother told him the man before him had just committed incest on his own daughter made me feel uneasy about his attitudes of women. He also describes a quite seedy side of Spain. That being said, I enjoyed his sense of adventure and found his writing style potent, succinct and very poetic. Some of his lines are among the best that I've read. Very mixed, but ultimately I would recommend the book if you can deal with the downsides I mentioned. The last chapter and a half about the start of the Spanish Civil War were absolute page-turners.

I've read a lot of travel books about people like Lee, who set off on their own to "see the world". What piqued my interest in this particular diary, however, was it's connection to the beginning, at least, of the Spanish Civil War. I grew up in the 30''s, and well remember this precursor to WW II, and the fateful & terrible events to follow. It also provides many stark descriptions, which I think most of us have either forgot... or never been aware of...the conditions of extreme poverty that existed in pre-WW II Europe, and are still extant in the third world. A more than worth-while read..

This has got to be one of the most evocative memoirs ever written; it certainly tops all the other road-trip/travelers tales I've read. As befits an award winning poet, Lee's prose has a concise, 3-D image making eloquence that drops the reader into the center of a scene, in the breathing presence of a character, or into the tactile truth of a landscape.In the mid-1930s, the nineteen year-old Lee sets out on foot from his Gloucestershire home, with a tin of biscuits and a violin, on his way to London via a hundred mile detour to coast "as I'd never yet seen the sea." Two years later he is fortuitously "rescued" off the coast of southern Spain by the Royal Navy trawling the Spanish beaches for stray Brits marooned between the warring factions of the Spanish Civil War. Lee's narrative of what happens in between these events provides priceless images of life as experienced by a penniless wanderer in depression-era Britain and pre-modern Spain.Few histories of an era or place can conjure its emotional and physical resonance quite so well as a living memory. In his description of life on the road to London, Lee is able to capture the essence of the failure of capitalism during the Thirties (our current failure being but an echo of it's father).Spoiler Alert...quotations from the book:Lee finds himself among the "host of unemployed who wandered aimlessly about England at that time...They were like a broken army walking away from war, cheeks sunken, eyes dead with fatigue. Some carried bags of tools or broken cardboard suitcases; some wore the ghosts of city suits...walking up and down the country in a maze of jobless refusals.." Among them are professional tramps, like Alf, who taught him the ways of the road. "He wore a deerstalker hat, so sodden and shredded it looked like a helping of breakfast food...a tramp to his bones, always wrapping and unwrapping himself, and picking over his bits and pieces...never passing a bit of grass that looked good for a shakedown nor a cottage that seemed ripe for charity."Soon after he parts from Alf on the outskirts of Ascot, the other half of society rolls into view: "I wasn't surprised when one of the Daimlers pulled up and an arm beckoned me from the window..."Want a pheasant my man?" asked a voice from inside. "We just knocked over a beauty a hundred yards back." A quarter of an hour later I arrived at Ascot. It was race week...little grooms and jockeys dodging among the long glossy legs of thoroughbreds; and the pedigree owners dipping their long cool necks into baskets of pate and gull's eggs...Alf and the tattered lines of the workless were far away in another country..."Plus ça change, eh?

It is a fact that there is a whole legion of walkers in the world and always has been. There perhaps are many like Laurie Lee and Paul Theroux who have walked to other lands but few of those have the gift of observation that sees things as they are and can write their opinion about it. Lee wrote in the last century- Theroux decades ago. In their reading it is clear they both truly liked about their adventures, the things they saw, and the people they met.Lee in his description of those two was most informative and entertaining; a gift to the 19year old novice walker that he was. The physical strength and endurance dictated by his route as well as his cleverness in finding the means to fit in and survive with the peasants of the many parts of Spain in the late 1930’s as he traveled, is what amazed me. It is well worth the read; a fine well written adventure.

I loved this book and was amazed that Laurie Lee, with such an impoverished upbringing in a tiny country village, could write so brilliantly. I greatly admired his gumption in setting off on foot and on his own with almost no money, almost no clothes and just an old violin for company. That he managed to survive in London - always an expensive place - and then get himself from one end of Spain to the other by busking is astonishing.Laurie Lee comes across as a highly intelligent person, in spite of having little in the way of formal education, but also an extremely empathetic and likeable person. I wish I could have met him - I'm sure it would have been wonderful!
