Firehouse Food: Cooking with San Francisco's Firefighters, by George Dolese

From Publishers Weekly

San Francisco firefighter and chef Chase Wilson wittily sums up her feelings about cooking for her fellow firefighters: "It's putting dinner on the table for 14 that gets my adrenaline going." And with that, authors Dolese (food writer and cookbook photos stylist) and Siegelman (cookbook writer) present meals that can be prepared for either army or family. These recipes, which often reflect the flavor of San Francisco, are as simple as Coleslaw with Pineapple and Dried Cherries (from Marty Verhaeg, Engine 13) or as time-consuming as Pork Mole, which can be prepared two days ahead of time (from Theresa Wolowic, Engine 32). The flavor-intense Villa Gumbo requires a roux and is served by Rich Gibson, whose Station 37, founded in 1915, ranks as one of the oldest. Desserts such as Warm Swiss Almond Apple Cake (from Lt. Richard Busalacchi, Truck 19) round out the recipes. From beginning to end, this accessible cookbook presents an enthusiastic, adrenaline-infused tone perfect for homecooks of any level. This was a Christmas gift for my son, currently receiving a degree in Fire Science. He was thrilled with it and very excited about trying out the recipes. All three of my boys were intrigued with this 'manly' cookbook. The recipes sound absolutely delicious, the book is filled with pictures, ingredients are readily available, prep info is easy to understand and the overall organization of the book is intuitive. My 21 year old is now going to be cooking for the family once a month. What could be better?!Thank you to all the FF who shared their stories, pictures and recipes in this wonderful cook book.

Outdated recipes. Didn’t identify one recipe that I would prepare. I really wanted to use this book but sadly it’s not a keeper.

Delicious food, easy to follow recipes, no weird ingredients. The trifecta of what makes a great cookbook.

After going through this book the first time I had marked a good 50% of the recipes to try, and now I am cooking my way through them. I even bought a second copy of the book for our vacation home since these recipes are easy to prepare and tasty too. Nothing too fancy, and it has recipes that a variety of people will enjoy.

This is one of my favorite go-to cookbooks! Absolutely love the recipes, along with the great photos. Simple home cooking, comfort style food, with a gourmet flair. From a delicious Skillet Paella, wonderful Salads to a Green Chile and Cheese Cornbread. So much variety and plenty to choose from. Thank you, San Francisco Firefighters!

My husband is a SF firefighter and tells me that these recipes get made on a regular basis. My husband is a great cook and enjoys cooking for his fellow firefighters. He also knows that if it's not good he's going to hear about it. When he first started with the department he used this book a lot knowing that the recipes had been tested in the firehouses and became classics. The men and women of SFFD know how to cook and love really good food. If you want to get a sense of what they eat in a real big city firehouse you can't go wrong with this book!

I bought this book because a friend made soup one night and it was spectacular. When I asked where the recipe was from, she showed me this book that she bought down in the City (San Francisco). I quickly picked it up too. It almost makes you want to be a SF Firefighter -- just for the food.Great stuff!

This is a really unique cookbook and it contains some terrific recipes as well as a glimpse of firehouse life. It's also beautifully produced with great photography, simple yet elegant design and excellent quality paper. There's a particularly good recipe and detailed description for making tamales. As for it being "a couple of jakes out for a quick buck", a portion of the profits go to the Surviving Families Fund of San Francisco Firefighters Local 798. A good cause in this firefighter's opinion...

Review

From the reviews: "The book is devoted to public key cryptography, whose principal goal is to allow two or more people to exchange confidential information … . The material is very well organized, and it is self-contained: no prerequisites in higher mathematics are needed. In fact, everything is explained and carefully covered … . there is abundance of examples and proposed exercises at the end of each chapter. … This book is ideal as a textbook for a course aimed at undergraduate mathematics or computer science students." (Fabio Mainardi, The Mathematical Association of America, October, 2008) "This book focuses on public key cryptography … . Hoffstein, Pipher, and Silverman … provide a thorough treatment of the topics while keeping the material accessible. … The book uses examples throughout the text to illustrate the theorems, and provides a large number of exercises … . The volume includes a nice bibliography. … Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduate through professional collections." (C. Bauer, Choice, Vol. 46 (7), March, 2009) "For most undergraduate students in mathematics or computer science (CS), mathematical cryptography is a challenging subject. … it is written in a way that makes you want to keep reading. … The authors officially targeted the book for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students. I believe that this audience is appropriate. … it could even be used with students who are just learning how to execute rigorous mathematical proofs. … I strongly believe that it finds the right tone for today’s students … ." (Burkhard Englert, ACM Computing Reviews, March, 2009) "The exercises and text would make an excellent course for undergraduate independent study. … This is an excellent book. Hoffstein, Pipher and Silverman have written as good a book as is possible to explain public key cryptography. … This book would probably be best suited for a graduate course that focused on public key cryptography, for undergraduate independent study, or for the mathematician who wants to see how mathematics is used in public key cryptography." (Jintai Ding and Chris Christensen, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2009 m)

Good start to this topic. The only hiccup was that I tried to work through the text example myself and came up with different answers. This is because the text was wrong. There is an extensive errata file that you can get online. May sure you get it before starting to work through text examples and end-of-chapter exercises. I hope that a revised version is issued that corrects these errata.

Good introduction to intermediate level coverage of math-based crypto, however, I found the text hard to follow because the cross references were hard to look up. E.g. a back reference to proposition x.y is hard to look up bec propositions are somewhat sparse and each chapter x is very large -- so you find yourself thumbing through the chapter trying to find propositions to get your bearing. It really interferes with the reading process. Including a page number would help greatly. (For more purely math books, this isn't as large of an issue bec there are so many propositions and theorems that it's easy to isolate the back reference -- but for this text, it is quite difficult.)

At least for the chapters that were studied by this reviewer, the authors of this book give an effective introduction to the mathematical theory used in cryptography at a level that can be approached by an undergraduate senior in mathematics. The field of cryptography is vast of course, and a book of this size could not capture it effectively. The topics of primary importance are represented however, and the authors do a fine job of motivating and explaining the needed concepts. The authors give an elementary overview of elliptic curves over the complex numbers, and most importantly over finite fields whose characteristic is greater than 3. The case where the characteristic is equal to 2 is delegated to its own section. In discussing the arithmetic of elliptic curves over finite fields, the authors give a good motivation for Hasse's formula, which gives a bound for the number of points of the elliptic curve (over a finite field), but they do not go into the details of the proof. The Hasse formula is viewed in some texts as a "Riemann Hypothesis" for elliptic curves over finite fields, and was proven by Hasse in 1934. This reviewer has not studied Hasse's proof, but a contemporary proof relies on the Frobenius map and its separability, two notions that the authors do not apparently want to introduce at this level of book (however they do introduce the Frobenius map when discussing elliptic curves over F2). Separability is viewed in some texts in elliptic curves as more of a technical issue, which can be ignored at an elementary level. It arises when studying endomorphisms of elliptic curves of fields of non-zero characteristic, and involves defining rational functions. The Frobenius map is not separable, and this fact allows one to show that its degree is strictly greater than the number of points in its kernel. Taking the nth power of the Frobenius map and adding to it the endomorphism which simply multiplies elements by -1, one can show that the number of points of the elliptic curve is equal to the degree of this endomorphism. Just a few more arithmetical calculations establishes Hasse's estimate. Some more of the highlights of this part of the book: - The reminder that the fastest known algorithm to solve the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem takes p^1/2 steps for a finite field Fp (i.e. the algorithms therefore are not really better than "black box" algorithms).- The brief historical discussion on public key cryptography.- The motivational discussion for the Lenstra algorithm using simple calculations that leads to a failed attempt to find the reciprocal of an integer modulo p. This failure is used to explain the workings of the Lenstra elliptic curve factorization algorithm in a way that it is better appreciated by the reader.- The discussion on the Frobenius map in the context of elliptic curves over F2 and its use in finding the number of points of an elliptic curve over a finite field.- The motivational discussion for the use of distortion maps, due to the degeneracy of the Weil pairing. The distortion maps are used to define a modified Weyl pairing, which is proved to be non-degenerate.Some omissions:- Algorithms used to calculate the number of points of an elliptic curve over a finite field that are more efficient than brute-force counting or estimation using Hasse's formula.- The proof that the torsion points of order m can be written as the product of two cyclic groups of order m. The authors apparently do not want to get into the notions of unramified and separable "isogenies" between elliptic curves and Galois extensions, both of which are used in the proof that they reference. Isogenies are mentioned in a footnote to the discussion on distortion maps, since the latter are isogenies.- The proof verifying certain properties of divisors, namely that they are equal if the corresponding rational functions are constant multiples of each other, and that the degree of a divisor is zero if its sum is the zero element of the elliptic curve. The proofs were no doubt omitted due to their dependence on techniques from algebraic geometry.- Quantum cryptography. This is discussed very briefly in the last chapter, but the subject is mature enough to be presented at the undergraduate level.- Cryptography based on non-Abelian groups. One good example would be cryptography based on the mathematical theory of knots and braids (the braid group is non-Abelian), even though this approach is in its infancy at the present time, and in almost all cases shown to be highly vulnerable to attacks. It could have been included in the last chapter or possibly as a long exercise.- Hyperelliptic curves are discussed very briefly in the last chapter, but a full-fledged presentation could be done in the book without missing the targeted audience. Hyperelliptic curves are also mentioned after the discussion of the MOV algorithm, wherein the authors allude to the use of Weil descent to transfer the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem to a discrete logarithm problem in a finite field F2^m when m is composite. The authors correctly don't want to elaborate on Weil descent in any more detail, since it requires a solid knowledge of field extensions and theory of algebraic varieties at a level that one obtains in a graduate course in algebraic geometry. Suffice it to say that the strategy of Weil descent involves finding a cover of the elliptic curve by a hyperelliptic curve that is defined over the extension of the ground field. This approach has been shown to be problematic for Koblitz curves, the latter of which are discussed in the book.Note: This review is based on a reading of chapters 5 and 8 of the book.

I used this book to teach a class of math and computer science majors. The book is great. It covers major topics; RSA, El-Gamal. Elliptic Curves, Lattice Based Cryptography. The systems are described and important attacks on the mathematical underpinnings are given in detail. The necessary mathematics is developed. Many homework problems on which the reader can practice are another strength. The students have expressed how much they get from the book. I highly recommend it.

I'm doing my honor's thesis on theoretical Cryptography as an undergrad at Colby College, and this book has been the perfect resource. It is so clear, and many time teaches by using easy to understand concrete examples. This book is the perfect place to start if you want to learn about Crypto.

This 500+ pages book is very nice and deals with the Mathematical point of view with many explanations, but one will always neeed an additional support book of Algebra such as Topics in Algebra by I. N. Herstein (LC 74-82577) to fully grasp all the related Math fundamentals.

Solid, introductory text for those familiar with abstract algebra, discrete mathematics and the like — and even those who are not.. and I’m the latter.

It is for undergrads, but useful at grad level to any student who didn't take the courses as an undergrad (i.e., fresh grad students discovering their love to cryptography)

I remember reading a lot of the Berenstain Bears when I was a kid, and this was one I remembered both fondly and vividly. It's an excellent book to use to teach values, but it's also well illustrated. When I received it, there was no damage or shelf wear, which I appreciated.

Stan and Jan Berenstain did it again. They manage to hold their audience captive throughout the reading of this cute little story. My four-year-old has my collection of Berenstain Bear Books from twenty-five years ago and he just loves each and every individual story. I hadn't read any newer Berenstain Bear books until I had a child of my own. This story does an excellent job of teaching children about being grateful for what they have. It's an inspiring family story and I would recommend it for any parent to read to their child. The book was purchased for a steal from the seller, arrived just days after being purchased, and is like a brand new book as far as condition goes.

Gave this as a follow up give to my nephew each holiday he gets one from me so he has a mini library of them. I loved these books as a child and he loves them too which makes me so happy

My first time reading this book was as an adult. This book changed my life and taught a wonderful lesson in being grateful for the things you have. I couldn't wait to read this to my children! They took to it and I couldn't get them to stop counting their blessings. Great read for any age! Would even be a good book for those who volunteer to read at nursing homes, libraries, and elementary schools. Classic that I am sure to keep forever.

Love this breaks!! Great price. Great lessons.

My four year old son has started collecting these books, and it's been a real treasure to read them to him because they bring back memories from my own childhood. He loves the stories just as much as I do. We especially love reading the little poems on the first page of each book! Each book teaches a different lesson. I love using them as examples of what not to do and also as positive reinforcement for my children.

We bought this book along with The Berenstain Bears and the Bad Dream and The Berenstain Bears and the Blame Game. just before Christmas. I wrote Amazon reviews for those books, so please check them out.I'm sorry to say this title is not up to par with the best of the Berenstain Bears series (I've listed several of our favorites below). The story follows both young bears' habit of visiting friends and returning home with a laundry list of "I wants" that drives Mama Bear crazy. However, the book strangely ends with Mama and Papa Bear talking about spoiling their kids with more toys so the parents can "count their blessings."A powerful rainstorm and subsequent power outage are used to illustrate the blessings of home and family. That's a good start but the book leaves out much. The story doesn't mention anyone less fortunate than the Berenstain Bears family, which leaves a hole in the moral of the story. I had hoped to use the book to launch a discussion with my young sons about counting your blessings, especially during the holidays, as well as to share some of our good fortune with others. Sadly, the book didn't provide much of a springboard. That said, our sons, ages 6 and 4, enjoy many of the Berenstain Bears books (we own more than 10 titles now) and find it easy to relate to the young bears in the series. I like to mix these stories into our rotation of bedtime books to reinforce good manners and behaviors. While I recommend the Berenstain books listed below, we've run into a new problem: the characters don't evolve. My sons are asking why brother and sister bear didn't learn from the last book. The good news is that my sons remember the lessons; the bad news is that the Berenstain bears don't.I also recommend these Berenstain books:The Berenstain Bears and the Trouble with ChoresThe Berenstain Bears Help Around the HouseThe Berenstain Bears Forget Their MannersThe Berenstain Bears Learn About StrangersThe Berenstain Bears Get in a FightThe Berenstain Bears and Too Much TV

The kids loved it!

4to. Complete Title: The New World: The First Pictures of America. Made by John White and Jacques Le Moyne, w/ contemporary narratives of The Huguenot Settlement in Florida 1562-1565 and the Virginia Colony 1585-1590: 292 (1) pp, acknowledgments, notes on this book, list of b&w plates, The Text; bibliography, index. Edited and Annotated by Stefan Lorant: First Edition, 1946. Beige textured-cloth with dark reddish-brown title plates and gilt lettering to front board and spine, and illustrated endpapers. ``Most fascinating are the illustrations of the New World. There are 64 water colors---all reproduced in their original colors. They were drawn by the govenor of Raleigh's second colony on Roanoke Island, John White. His pictues made in 1585 are the earliest authentic representations of aboriginal life in North America. 23 of White's water colors were ingraved by Theodore De Bry, the Flemish artist, when he published a book on the English Colony in 1590. 43 additional pictures of his depict the life of the first Huguenot Colony on the shores of St. Johns' River, and were make after the paintings of Jacques Le Moyne, who came to the Florida Colony with Jean Ribaut. Thus this book offers five different books in one: White's water colors (Virginia); De Bry's engravings of Florida and Virginia; Hariot's report (Virginia); and Le Moyne eyewitness accounts."

This is an excellent source book for studying the European discovery of the New World. When explorers came, they brought artists, and the artwork included in this book is from one of them. Many of the native people (especially in the warmer climates) did not dress to cover and that is portrayed. While I wouldn't say the book should be banned or is pornographic, I would warn parents that they may want to use discretion in allowing their children easy access to it. The drawings are sketches and done after a manner to document what they saw, not as anything else, and that comes through so I give a qualified recommendation for it.

Very good ilustrations with a helpful text. Fills in a little known period in our history. Just what I was looking for.

I expected this book to contain only pictures in color. The description says it has water colors done by John Smith of Pocahantas fame. There is a group of pictures in color but they are largely of flora and fish. The largest part of the illustrations are in black and white. Nonetheless, I'm glad I bought the book. It is in excellent condition.Katy Brown

Beautiful Condition and a treasure trove of information and pictures!!!

This book has fantastic artwork by the early European artists that voyaged to America. It's a unique view of Native peoples and American wildlife.

Having been written in the 1950s and reprinted in the 1960s, this is not the newest work on this subject matter. It does, however, provide a great deal of information concerning French colonizing efforts in the New World (especially is what is today Florida). The reprints of the block print illustrations are great. I'm into collecting re-prints of antiquarian books, especially those concerning exploration and discovery, and it you are into that as well, this is one book that should be in your collection.

Beautiful book. Great price. Excellance packing. Arrived sooner than expected. Thank you so much.

great book its ashame to see history destroyed for the sake of a cruise ship, see [...] jaxport does not care about the founder of the river of may or how important history really is, we learn from books and try to preserve our history such as this.

Review

“An outstanding addition to a first-rate series.” ―Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)“O'Connor's brand of classical mythology for modern sensibilities serves as a good introduction to the gods and settings of the Greek myths.” ―Publishers Weekly“The writing is well done, the story line is interesting and moves quickly, the characters are colorful, and this adventure is exciting.” ―Children's Literature“O'Connor's artwork remains as strong as ever, especially in the glorious illustrations of the underworld.” ―VOYA“Atmospheric, with descriptions and images of the Underworld that are so captivating that readers will pore over those pages again and again. O'Connor's illustrations, filled with lots of color and haunting illuminations, are well suited to this exciting story and will attract even the most reluctant readers.” ―School Library Journal

About the Author

George O'Connor is an author, illustrator and cartoonist. His first graphic novel, Journey Into Mohawk Country, used as its sole text the actual historical journal of the seventeenth-century Dutch trader Harmen Meyndertsz van den Bogaert, and told the true story of how New York almost wasn't. He followed that up with Ball Peen Hammer, the first graphic novel written by playwright Adam Rapp, a dark, dystopian view of a society's collapse. Now he has brought his attention to Olympians, an ongoing series retelling the classic Greek myths in comics form. In addition to his graphic novel career, O'Connor has published several children's picture books, including the New York Times best-selling Kapow, Sally and the Some-Thing, and Uncle Bigfoot. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Hades is naturally viewed as the villain by many people (Whether it's because he's "Lord of the Dead" or from that animated movie Hercules, which is very funny and heartfelt, but it gets the Greek Gods wrong on so many levels) but George's book perfectly illustrates that he's actually not the bad guy. Great story and great artwork. I was very pleased with the book and I'm definitely going to be looking out for more of George's work.

This book is a fantastic deal for such an exceptional quality book (this is my translation of what my 9-year-old son said "this book is so cheap for being so good!"). These are instant favorites for my 3rd grade twin boys and are a great supplement for their love of the Percy Jackson series. Great, super speedy, delivery of high quality books.

I’m a big fan of Hades, and this book doesn’t disappoint. Despite the whole kidnap thing, Hades is a good guy who hopes Persephone will come to love him. Kudos for giving P agency in this retelling.

it shows to a decent degree that hades was a missunderstood character.. him being the god of death.. and living in the underworld the other gods put him thru allot.. good read at a good price

I actually do worship the Greek Gods and Greek Goddesses. I love the art and I love how the author explains about the life of Hades, Persephone and Demeter. :)

This is one of the few retellings of Greek myth about Hades that treats him fairly. Too often he is conflated with Satan and portrayed as evil, but Hades was one of the few gods that did as he was meant to do.

Super fun read. Hades and Persephone is my favorite story in Greek mythology so this was a great and fun way to read it

Good quality graphic novel. The artwork in these is fantastic. I don't read them myself, but my family says they're great.
