The first of several Harmony novels by the Friends theologian and pastor Phil Gulley. Suffice it to say that the first page was so funny that I read it twice and showed it to a friend, not a Quaker, who found it even funnier (being a man; there were other reasons, but they would be distracting). The book is clearly a first novel; there are a few flaws and perhaps--I won't assert this fully, as it may be my problem--a masculinist prose that I'd have enjoyed a bit more had it been more general. (It's hard to say this, as I'm not sure it's that big a problem, if a problem at all.) But it's a very entertaining, sincere book, highly realistic about the inner workings of meeting politics and the difficulties of finding perfection in mortal being. And wonderfully witty. It gives, if the reader is interested, a good view of how a Friends meeting works and what its values should be and sometimes are. I've ordered the next book and will read them all. It might be of importance to note that this book is contemporary: You will not find the Quaker Oats hats (which actually aren't Quaker); nor will the ladies wear long gray dresses and white aprons (no aprons at all, in fact). It's today's small-town life from a particular point of view. Very enjoyable and a generous, realistic spirit pervades the novel.

THOUGHTS ON RUNNING AWAYIN THE past when I wanted to get out of a not so wonderful situation happening in my life, I either turned my back on it and pretended I wasn’t there or I actually left . In other words I ran away. Sometimes when I couldn’t handle having to be in the situation, as it called for me to be able to make decisions, I ate my way through tons of chocolate. I found chocolate pretzels were very satisfying.after waking up and growing up I becoming more enlightened about my poor behavior. I said to God, OK I will be here and do my duty I know its my responsibilities I ran away from. I tried hard to be focused on the problems of my life and to live up to the challenge of howGod wanted me to be there …( as I couldn’t be any place else) and work through the problems that were accosting me. I tried hard not to run away from my responsibilities. God doesnt drop problems on me , life does,. Now that I am trying to enjoy letting God solve the problems with me rather than trying to cope with them alone I have found a great deal of peace. Now I run to God who gathers me up in his arms and sits me on his lap and reads to me.You might think that is easy but we have to find time to do this and here is the way it works ;Mornings are dedicated to all the issues of the day and then you get hungryNoon is the time to fill the food basket your earring around and then comes the best time of all.I get in my recliner( as all 82year olds seem to have one ), Kick out the foot rest, and grab my Ipad( again the new age of books) and open to the page I left off on and …….there I go on a journey to another land. I am sometimes in ‘south carolina or Ireland or right now I am in Indiana in a small town called Harmony. God grants me a few hours to run away in books, I have chosen some great ones with his help.If you are prone to running away you might try staying close to the phone and the problems that accost you with the advantage of being able to get on the space ship that the books on the I pad provide. No chocolates just a good pair of reading glasses and your on your way.. I am enjoying being in Harmony with Sam and his wife Barbara and two sons. Harmony is located in a very small town in the middle of Indiana, you say you cant locate it on the atlas, that is true as the town is hiding under the staple holding the page in the atlas of Rand McNallyOnce your there you will meet Sams community. He was born and raised there and after a jaunt to college and a job in another town he came back to his home town to take over the leadership of theFriends meeting, and work with the Friendly Women as they called their group. His writing style is very real, like I was there. Funny, sad, thought provoking. I never knew a Quaker pastor before but now I am in love with Harmony. cant wait to read the next book Phillip Gulley writes. Try HOME TO HARMONY

I absolutely love the Harmony series. These books make me laugh out loud and ponder life. I highly recommend them no matter what your religious affiliation or non-affiliation. I do see that some reviewers think he's not the right kind of religious for them, but that's too bad. I have a very hard time with religious people thinking they have all the answers and the other guys don't. I like how he pokes fun at all of us flawed human beings; without a sense of humor, life is pretty rigid. I plan to read every single thing Philip Gulley has written and I enjoy his columns in Indianapolis Monthly magazine. I'm not a church goer, but I would go to his church. I'm not sure a minister would want that sort of recommendation, but I think his approach to religion is softer and kinder and what it should be like.

I have to admit, I'm stuck half way through this. But every time I go back to it, I don't know why I stopped reading it. I bought it while researching utpoias and visions of the afterlife for my MA, because even though it is not a utopia of vision of the afterlife, it is a fictional world where the problems are small, even if they represent the same sins that writ large destroy lives and society. But if you like Andy Griffith Show and his adventures in Mayberry (and I do), this is that, but with homily tossed in.

Homey and heartwarming writing - very refreshing in these coarse-edged times. However, I don't agree with Publisher's Weekly comparison that it is "in a league with Jan Karon's 'Mitford' series". Her novels follow a story line which progresses forward and develops a plot, whereas Mr. Gulley's writing is more like a series of essays on life in a small town. He jumps around in time throughout the book; past to present and back. Both authors' character descriptions are similar, agreed.I'm not familiar with the Quakers, but learned some interesting things about their faith.

I stumbled onto this book on a Kindle sale and was at first wondering why Gulley was compared to James Harriott and Jan Karon. Now, halfway through the book, I agree. The reason I recommend it to those who think Christians are hypocrites is that Gulley does a fine job of exposing those who claim to be Christian but are doing evil instead of good. The book seems a bit choppy at times, but each chapter has a point to make and I find myself laughing out loud quite often.

From the Back Cover

PARENTING / HEALTH With her first book, the groundbreaking Multiple Sclerosis, Judy Graham helped thousands of people with MS by supplying valuable information on how to manage the condition. Now in Multiple Sclerosis and Having a Baby, Graham turns her focus to parenthood. With the genuine insight that only comes from firsthand experience, Graham answers all the questions someone with MS may have about pregnancy, childbirth, and parenthood. Will having a baby make my MS worse? Can I pass MS on to my child? Can I have a normal birth? Should I breast-feed? Is it safe to take drugs? What about having more than one child? Using the latest medical research, Graham gives factual answers to all of these questions. From her discussions with dozens of parents who have MS themselves, she passes on to prospective parents the wisdom of those who have raised children successfully. In addition to giving medical information, Multiple Sclerosis and Having a Baby offers practical advice on how to make the most of parenthood and straightforwardly explores the issues of sexuality, the impact of MS on relationships, and how and why a person with a disability can still be a good parent. As in her earlier book, Graham offers hope that the disease can be slowed or stabilized through eating a low-fat diet, detecting food allergies, and using nutritional supplements. She also discusses effective pain management through the use of alternative therapies such as yoga, acupuncture, magnet therapy, and homeopathy. Multiple Sclerosis and Having a Baby gives an insightful presentation of the “whole picture”--what it means to be a parent with MS, from conception to your child’s adulthood--in an effort to make the experiences of childbirth and raising a family the joyful and informed experiences they should be. JUDY GRAHAM has had MS for more than twenty-six years and gave birth for the first time at age thirty-eight. By following a variety of alternative therapies she has succeeded in stabilizing her condition and continues to work as a writer and journalist. The author of Multiple Sclerosis and Evening Primrose Oil, she lives in London with her teenage son Pascal.

I still have a lot of questions but this was a good starting point. It was a quick read. Useful info for any preg person>. Like vitamins to take to try and help minimize chances of post partum depression. I find it shocking there are people in the world who assume MS ppl wouldn’t/shouldn’t have babies. MS parents can be just as good and loving as any parent. Some of the info may be a little out of date but overall helpful.

This was very readable and offered clear and helpful statements of facts as known by medical literature from a few years ago. The anecdotes from various women helped me imagine what a particular result/situation would be like if I were faced with that, which was a helpful supplement to the statistics. Italso offers many practical tips, which while most of us know/may have read before regarding MS generally (keep cool) it was helpful to have them listed nonetheless. When I am in mother-martyr mode I will try to remember the recommendations to ask for help, accept help, and make time for yourself and to rest...and plan ahead for how to make these things possible. While it would be great if updated, it was still well worth buying and reading. I want to go into pregnancy having thought through as many issues as I can (or at least begun to think about them...), and this book helped me do that regarding having MS.

This is the worst book I have ever read.First of all, it bases its "findings" on academic studies that are out of date and contradictory. The book gives no "conclusions" about any topic, but instead presents every piece of research done. She includes research that was conducted before the medical community had a strong understanding of MS and research conducted even before disease modifying medications were developed. To make matters worse, the does nothing to summarize or explain the findings in a meaningful way.Furthermore, the author's tone and language is incredibly offensive. She refers to people with multiple sclerosis as "disabled" throughout and even goes so far as to suggest that they are "deteriorating". In her relationships section of the book she says something to the extent that people with MS might not be able to find relationships, but don't worry because there are plenty of other disabled people longing for companionship. As if those with MS are unworthy of affection from someone without a chronic illness. Or, my personal favorite, she claims that MS can make existing relationships hard now that one person in the relationship is deteriorating. This kind of language is prevalent throughout the book.Painfully brief excerpts from patient stories are included. It's nice to hear whether someone experienced a relapse after giving birth, for example, but you don't know anything else about them - how long had they had MS, what form of MS they have, how soon after birth did they return to medication, what did their relapse rate look like before becoming pregnant? Without any context, these tid-bits are useless. And the ones about bad experiences are particularly nerve wracking.Overall, this book was not in the least bit informative, and does a lot to damage spirit and hope. I'd suggest that you save yourself the money and just have a good chat with your Neurologist and OBGYN.

This book is very very outdated and has many inaccurate findings. It is very depressing and makes you think pregnancy with MS is a bad bad thing. This is the stuff they talked about years ago before all the disease modifying drugs and up to current research. This book is a waste of time.

This book has opinions of women who have ms and have had babies and some are very frightening. I wanted to know the facts of being pregnant with ms as well as what happened afterwards, but some of the stories had too much gloom and doom. One thing that I do know about ms is that everyones disease is different and it can change over time. I am one of the lucky ones who has no symptoms and after reading the majority of the book and crying while I read it, my husband asked me to throw it away.

I liked this book because it has an easy to read format and helpful information. I'm planning for pregnancy for a second child, and even already going through it once, I know this book will be a good reference, especially regarding nutrition and supplements. The author also doesn't force opinions on you. She lays out the facts so that you can make informed choices and be confident in those choices.

This is a great collection of real-life stories and helpful hints for women with Multiple Sclerosis. If you are thinking about having a child and you have MS, this is a book you need to read. It gives many different options for those who decide to have a baby. I am going to keep this a reference thoughout my pregnancy. Thanks Judy!

I loved this book! I had 2 children before MS and was quite unsure about how MS would effect the entire process. This book answered all my questions, provided scientific data for both sides when there was something to think about, and was very encouraging while realistic.

Review

“Crothers spent four all-access years with Dorrance and his players for this rich biography and tells the tale of an imperfect man who has shaped a near perfect program.” ―Time“Dorrance is a mesmerizing orator, and Crothers reveals the stark emotional power that Dorrance wields over his teams.” ―Sports Illustrated“Anson Dorrance's story is one of the most fascinating to ever come along in American sports. And Tim Crothers is the perfect writer to tell it.” ―Rick Reilly, ESPN“A great read for anybody aspiring to be the best in sports, business, or whatever their chosen field.” ―Dr. Stephen Covey, bestselling author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People“I've known Anson for almost fourty years, but this book details so much that I never knew about the man behind Carolina's remarkable soccer program. Anyone who coaches, teaches or has a positive influence on young people can learn from someone who is one of the greatest leaders to ever coach any sport.” ―Roy Williams, University of North Carolina national champion men’s basketball coach“Anson has built a dynasty that has no comparison and Tim Crothers has written a book that is equally extraordinary.” ―Dean Smith, Hall of Fame basketball coach “A rare look behind the scenes at everything it takes to coach and play a sport at the highest level, but to me it's really more about what Anson has done to coach all of us so well in life.” ―Mia Hamm, two-time Women’s World Cup championship team member

The book is very good for about the first half or so. It goes through Dorrance's life, how he built the program at UNC, his stint coaching the national team, and the sexual harassment suit. Then it turns a collection of anecdotes from his coaching tenure and becomes very boring and tiresome. They should have edited about 100 pages out of it and it would have been a much better read.

An amazing look into the UNC women's soccer program and their legendary coach. The book gives a great idea about what makes Anson special and why UNC has been so successful. This is a book I would recommend for a coach of any sport. A lot of what is covered is universal and is especially relevant to women's sports.

I wanted to read this book because my daughter said she would like to play soccer at UNC. I knew nothing about the team or Anson Dorrance. What an inspirational book. I have highlighted many passages to share with my daughters, one of whom does not play soccer, but I feel these passages are life lessons. Great read!

This was an incredible book to read as a college athlete. I recommend it for anyone who has ever touched college athletics - player, coach, parent, fan, everyone can get something out of this.

I have three daughters that are playing club soccer. This book provided the needed insight to better understand what it takes to motivate young women to play at their highet potential. While I'm sure these methods and logic will not work for every player, it's chock full of what has worked for this coach and also what has not worked. Many life lessons, motivational sayings, and heartfelt experiences from the players who attended UNC that bolster the credibility of what Anson Dorrance has created. Simply, it's a must read if you want to better understand if your daughter has what it takes to truly push herself.

This is the first time I've ever bothered to review a book on Amazon. I'm a relatively new basketball coach who has been finding and reading as many different books on coaching and sports as I can. This is by far and away the best I've read. I've been taking notes on ideas I've liked about Dorrance's coaching style and have filled up pages with amazing ideas and quotes. I completely understand why Dorrance and UNC soccer are responsible for such unparalleled success. This is truly an inspirational book and should be required reading for any coach of any sport looking to learn from the best.

This book teaches much about the productive side of competitive development of people. Very interesting how Dorrance's strengths & weaknesses have played out with the support of fellow coaches & players. I found this well worth my time despite never having much interest in soccer nor women's collegiate athletics.

While not what I would call unbiased (the author clearly loves Dorrance), it is a great read for those interested in coaching women's sports, and interestingly, also touches on some practical application of 3rd or 4th wave feminism.I read it because I coach roller derby, and I have been recommending it to anyone who will listen and citing Dorrance in regular conversation.
