The Data Driven Leader resonated completely with my own experiences and personal bias for HR professionals to be stronger, data-driven business leaders. I found the approach very practical, the writing very thoughtful and the use of specific examples very helpful—especially the last chapter that provided key Impact metrics. Highly recommended reading for business people who are on a journey to become more objective (vs. completely intuitive) decision-makers and leaders.

Nailed it. Again. As any new field of expertise emerges, charlatans abound who say profound things without much substance. This follow up to Data Driven is practical and practicable. Soon enough it will be taken for granted that these capabilities are pre-requisite to manage the performance of people. I have recommended the first book to anyone interested in their people Analytics journey and shall do this same with this volume (likewise read in one sitting)

Well constructed case and works beautifully!

Must read for all leaders. Shows how all interdependent success and failure is in organizations - nothing wins or loses alone! Excellent tutorial on what and how to measure in organizations to lead from strength and KPIs that matter. The future of HR. The future of sustainable business. Every business is a data business. (Note I received this book at an event where Jenny Dearborn was the keynote. She was awesome in person too.)

Penned by a terrific writer, Peter Maas ("The Valachi Papers," "King of the Gypsies"). This book is an excellent showcase for Mass's well-honed skills: excellent narrative, well-drawn characters, great dialogue, subtle humor, and under-the-microscope detail (meticulous, but never too fussy).Unfortunately, I read this book about 20 times or so before I saw the movie (directed by Sidney Lumet and released in 1973, starring Al Pacino, who gave a good performance in the title role). Peter Maas must be one of the most cinematic novelists of all time, which means that, more so than most novels I've read, I saw this novel, very lucidly, as a movie in my mind, over and over, as I read this book, over and over. What Sidney Lumet put up on the screen couldn't begin to compare with what I saw in my mind as I read the book.On the other hand, I've never been much of a Sidney Lumet fan ("Network," "The Verdict," "The Morning After"). I've never thought much of his in-your-face dullsville mainstream liberal speechifying and his no-directorial-style "style." Not to mention that Lumet left out of the movie many of the best parts of the book.-----------------------------------Oh me oh my, I just finished reading the above and it seems to focus more on the movie than the book.Getting back to the book: I LOVE THIS BOOK. Go out and get it. Even if you're not interested in cop novels or cops in general (although Frank Serpico was no typical cop). Think of it as an excellent biography (you do like biographies, don't you?).

As a whistleblower myself, I found Frank Serpico's story particularly compelling. It's an interesting read and well written. I also love that my copy was autographed by Frank Serpico.

Any book by Peter Maas is well written and worth reading, as is Serpico, but the only thing wrong with this book is they're no photos; takes somejoy out of reading it.

Serpico is an interesting and well written book about the struggles Frank Serpico faced while trying to be an honest cop among the corrupt practices which were ongoing at the time in New York City. His struggles ultimately led to the Knapp Commission and reforms at the NYPD, and set the stage for ethical reforms in policing across America.

Good book, very believable well written Recommended

This IS A TRUE STORY!!! This is the story of ONE honest cop/detective that actually tried to clean up crime in the "Big Apple" and got a bullet in his head thanks to his fellow officers due to his bringing in the FBI to clean up the NYPD itself....full of corruption!!!!!This man deserves to be awarded the MEDAL OF HONOR.......strong words, yet few people in the history of our country have sacrificed as much as him and very unfortnately, only lip service is given in support by the Congress of the United States.Frank Serpico is a modern AMERICAN HERO of the HIGHEST ORDER!!!!!!!By the way, Mr. Serpico has to live in a foreign country to protect himself from taking a finalizing "hit" from friends of the corrupt officers of the NYPD.....I'm not saying ALL the officers are corrupt but far too many are!

Well-written biography about an amazing man who, although he was afraid for his life, went ahead and did the right thing anyway. And in doing so, changed police departments all over the country for the better.

Enjoyed very much the book!

The God of Small Things, by Arundhati Roy

Amazon.com Review

In her first novel, award-winning Indian screenwriter Arundhati Roy conjures a whoosh of wordplay that rises from the pages like a brilliant jazz improvisation. The God of Small Things is nominally the story of young twins Rahel and Estha and the rest of their family, but the book feels like a million stories spinning out indefinitely; it is the product of a genius child-mind that takes everything in and transforms it in an alchemy of poetry. The God of Small Things is at once exotic and familiar to the Western reader, written in an English that's completely new and invigorated by the Asian Indian influences of culture and language.

From Publishers Weekly

With sensuous prose, a dreamlike style infused with breathtakingly beautiful images and keen insight into human nature, Roy's debut novel charts fresh territory in the genre of magical, prismatic literature. Set in Kerala, India, during the late 1960s when Communism rattled the age-old caste system, the story begins with the funeral of young Sophie Mol, the cousin of the novel's protagonists, Rahel and her fraternal twin brother, Estha. In a circuitous and suspenseful narrative, Roy reveals the family tensions that led to the twins' behavior on the fateful night that Sophie drowned. Beneath the drama of a family tragedy lies a background of local politics, social taboos and the tide of history?all of which come together in a slip of fate, after which a family is irreparably shattered. Roy captures the children's candid observations but clouded understanding of adults' complex emotional lives. Rahel notices that "at times like these, only the Small Things are ever said. The Big Things lurk unsaid inside." Plangent with a sad wisdom, the children's view is never oversimplified, and the adult characters reveal their frailties?and in one case, a repulsively evil power?in subtle and complex ways. While Roy's powers of description are formidable, she sometimes succumbs to overwriting, forcing every minute detail to symbolize something bigger, and the pace of the story slows. But these lapses are few, and her powers coalesce magnificently in the book's second half. Roy's clarity of vision is remarkable, her voice original, her story beautifully constructed and masterfully told. First serial to Granta; foreign rights sold in France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Holland, India, Greece, Canada and the U.K. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This review is posted on my blog: [...] my writing seminar here at school, we had to read The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. This novel takes place in southern India and follows the life of the twins Esthappen and Rahel. It is 1969 and the Marxist Uprising is very prominent in the state of Kerala. Through a series of flashbacks and present day scenes, Roy creatively illustrates the unbecoming of their family through secrecy, loss of innocence, and tragedy. This was one of the best books I have had to read for a class. It throws the twins into a situation they never dreamed of being in and shows how one person’s mistakes can affect an entire family. While reading, you slowly begin to see the children lose their innocence and trust in the good things that their world has to offer, which ultimately hardens their hearts. The conclusion of this novel was very tragic and made me cry. When you learn who the “God of Small Things” is it makes you so happy but you also know what is going to happen and it is so upsetting. But once the twins are reunited as adults, they realize that there was always that special connection between them, even if it isn’t the connection you expect.Roy’s work successfully shows the corruption of India’s current Love Laws and Caste System. She breaks down borders and builds her characters around these strict laws but allows them to step out of bounds. Through her social commentary, Roy thoroughly describes to the reader what needs to be changed in India. Roy is a fresh and strong voice that stands up against the laws of her land, showing others that change is necessary.4.3 Stars

Arundhati Roy has a new book, her second novel, out this year and much acclaimed. I want to read it, but in thinking about that book, I remembered her remarkable debut novel, The God of Small Things, which was published twenty years ago in 1997. I had read the book back then, but in recalling it today, I found that its details had blurred and I wanted to read it again. And so I did.It was even better the second time around. Perhaps my life experience in the last twenty years has given me a greater appreciation of the story.Roy's luminous prose makes reading an unadulterated pleasure, even when she is describing the tragic events of this tale. The story of fraternal ("two-egg" in the language of the book) twins Esthappen and Rahel and their childhood in the state of Kerala in the southern tip of India, as they try to understand and come to terms with their fractured family and as they learn to their eternal sorrow that the events of one day can change things forever, is a story which everyone who has ever been a child should be able to relate to.Moreover, I thought the structure which Roy gave to the story was absolutely brilliant in its conception and execution. She begins the story at its end and ends it at its beginning and, throughout, the action slips effortlessly back and forth between the present and the beginnings in 1969.The twins and their mother, Ammu, had returned to the family home in Ayemenem after the mother divorced her abusive drunkard husband. But because of the divorce, she is considered an outcast and she and her children are resented by the family, especially by her aunt, Baby Kochamma, a woman whose own desire for love has been thwarted. In fact, everyone in this fraught household has been thwarted in love in one way or another.Ammu's brother, Chako (Rhodes scholar, pickle baron, and radical Marxist), had married a woman in England but after their daughter was born, the first bloom of love faded and she left him for another man. Then, he, too, returned to Ayemenem.Ammu's and Chako's mother, Mammachi, is a widow, now blind, who was regularly beaten by her husband with a brass pot when he was alive. In this atmosphere of frustrated desires, Ammu must try to raise her children and give them happy lives. The caste system is still very much a part of society in India in 1969 and it pollutes relations at every level. The twins have a friend, teacher, and protector in Velutha, a member of the Untouchable caste. He is someone who grew up with their mother. The two children love him by day, but, in secret, their lonely mother loves him at night. It is, of course, a forbidden love and one that can only end in grief. The catalyst for the tragedy to come is the Christmas visit to the home by Chako's ex-wife, Margaret, and his beloved daughter, Sophie. It's impossible to further describe the plot without spoilers. Suffice to say that no one escapes unchanged.Roy loads her narrative with foreshadowing so that one feels a constant sense of trepidation and anxiety. When the worst happens, it is hardly a surprise and yet the reader is still devastated. What strikes me as most tragic is not so much the suffering of these flawed characters, but the fact that such suffering is so commonplace. We are reading of the effects of the caste system in India in the 1960s; it might just as easily be about racism, misogyny, xenophobia in America today. Human nature has not improved in the last fifty years. In that regard, sadly, Roy's story stands up very well to the passage of time.

Arundhati Roy, in his tale of “two-egg twins,” weaves a story that will stay with you and grow long after you’ve put it down. Roy brings the Indian valley around Ayemenem to life with a power and depth that reminds me of Steinbeck’s rendition of the Salinas Valley. Its heat, smells, wildlife suck you with an intensity far deeper than the “vast, violent, circling, driving, ridiculous, insane, unfeasible, public turmoil of a nation.” It is a book for those who love being carried deep into the time and place that shape the destinies of the characters.Rahel and Estha who, though they are “two-egg twins,” share each other’s inner lives as they grow up in a world shaped by their mother, Ammu, their Uncle Chaco, their grandaunt, Baby Kochama, and the Paradise Pickle and Preserves factory owned by their grandmother, Mamachi. The world of Small Things. As the story opens, they are returning to Ayamenem as adults split from each other by a past shaped in some way by the death of their cousin, Sophie Mol.We then return to the world of seven-year olds on their way to the airport to meet Chaco’s British ex-wife, and their cousin, Sophie Mol. Through their eyes, we learn with them the adult world, where western culture has descended via television onto the already chaotic colonial mix of Indian and British. Estha wears his “Elvis puff. His “Special Outing Puff.” Rahel’s hair is held by a “Love in Tokyo,”—two beads on a rubber band—and her “Airport Frock.”The story of the tragedy that ended that visit unfolds slowly through the lives of the household as each stumbles through the incoherent mix of language and custom—The God of Big Things. The children learn the mix of English and Indian culture along with universal adult axioms (control your Hopes, not doing so is a Bad Sign) with an innocence that makes its incoherence hilarious and heartwarming. They fill us with joy and dread. They are, as their mother sees them “small bewildered frogs engrossed in each other’s company, lolloping arm in arm down a highway full of hurtling traffic. Entirely oblivious of what trucks can do to frogs.”And inevitably, it happens. The mix childish misadventure and Big God tabu that comes crashing down in an afternoon on the river is horrifying and devastating. We have come to love these people and feel a part of their struggle to make sense of the world.

"To instruct and to delight", which Horace called the aim of the poet, is at least as appropriate for the non-fiction author. All too often, instruction spills over into lecturing and any delight is swamped by turgid prose. David Pilling's "Bending Adversity", however, is a sterling example of just how instructive and delightful non-fiction can be. Mr. Pilling, the Financial Times Tokyo bureau chief from 2002 from 2008, has an expert knowledge of Japan's economic and political systems. He also shows a perceptive appreciation for Japanese history and its culture. Finally, he is a gifted and entertaining writer, who can focus on touching vignettes or on complex ideas with equal precision. This is perhaps the best book I have read about Japan in quite a while; I strongly recommend it to anyone who is interested in where Japan is now.Mr. Pilling begins and ends with the triple shock of March 2011 -- the earthquake, the tsunami, and the release of radiation from the Fukushima nuclear plant. He brilliantly describes what the stricken area looked like after the disaster, and how people behaved during and after the crisis. They behaved very well, which brings him to his trope of "bending with adversity". The Japanese as a people, a friend tells him, are not destroyed by calamity, because they adapt, move on, and begin again. He explores this idea through the last 150 years of Japanese history, when violent change (the opening of Japan, Japan's defeat in World War 2} provoked dramatic adaptation. The middle part of the book discusses Japan's economic situation, and Mr. Pilling very pertinently points out that reports of its death have been been exaggerated. He quotes a British parliamentarian, visiting Tokyo in the mid-2000's. Stunned by the brilliant lights and hyperactivity of the capital, the MP said "If this is a recession I want one". Japan has lost ground relatively, in part because of falling prices and a declining population: price-adjusted GDP per capita has held up much better than other measures. And this is reflected in the fact that in absolute terms Japan still enjoys very high living standards, very low crime, and a low unemployment rate. This isn't to say there are not problems. There are, and Mr. Pilling shows how some of these impeded recovery from the 2011 disaster, and may in fact have contributed to it. A cosy bureaucratic/business establishment acts to paper over, to conceal, to misdirect. Politics remains ineffective; it is two decades since the bubble collapsed, but many of the reforms that could have alleviated or avoided it remain undone. And Japan's external relations are increasingly problematic, in large part because of the rise of China, but also because of Japan's unwillingness to confront its past.Still and all, Mr. Pilling's exploration of Japan is much more hopeful, and much less cliched, than much other recent writing on Japan. His book is well worth reading.

I suppose, really, that any country one has not grown up in can be an enigma. I have always loved my visits to Japan, and while I would never presume to "know" the country, I found a deep connection to some traditions and social behaviors that reflect my own beliefs and outlook, i.e., courteousness, cleanliness, and interactions with nature. However, this book has laid bare a part of Japan's soul, and I realize that there is much more to the people of Japan than I thought. Pilling, through his interviews and conversations, reflects the complexity and essence of a country and its people as they struggle to survive when facing major national events. I highly recommend this book.

David Pilling’s book Bending Adversity: Japan and the Art of Survival made a strong argument for the incredible ability of Japan to seemingly rise time and again from the ashes and rubble of adversities and complete ruptures to society that it has faced and – the focus of Pilling’s book – continues to face throughout its history. While attempting to pinpoint any aspect of a culture and argue for its ever-present effect in a culture’s history is anything but daunting, let alone attempting to do so in a mere 300 page book, it is nonetheless an imperative process to explore as history is far more than simple dates and events. To quote a valued professor of mine, “History doesn’t occur in a vacuum.” Further reinforced by Pilling, “… cultures are not immutable. Like language they evolve and adapt, though they may take generations to do so. To seek to explain the history of a country – let alone its future – on the basis of supposedly fixed national characteristics is to succumb to a determinist view of the world. We should challenge some of the assumptions that give rise to such opinions.” This is the goal of Pilling’s book, to look into the heart of Japan and get in touch with its people and understand the personality of a nation who is arguably perhaps the most skilled country in the “Art of Survival.” The only criticism that I can offer to Pilling would be to write a longer book, though I understand his focus on the more recent events of “triple shock” of 2011, I would have liked if he had discussed more about Jared Diamonds, ideologies and the Tokugawa period of Japan. Though as a journalist, living “interview-able” people are equally important and Pilling did very well collecting and synthesizing his sources to produce a very effective argument for Japan’s ability to “Bend Adversity.”

So many of the great, insightful books on Japan were written during the period of Japan's economic bubble, when all of the world was really paying attention to Japan. If (like me), you read a lot about Japan decades ago but took a break since then, "Bending Adversity" is a wonderful place to rediscover Japan. Excellent insights into both culture, history, and politics. Pilling knows Japan well and while I felt his thoughts on Japan were sometimes a bit too rosy, they are a good balance to the recent din echoed in the press about "Japan's the past, (China's the future)."
