Together with her book on Classical Painting, Ms. Aristidesâ€™ books revolutionized my approach to doing artwork. I started as an almost complete beginner with no formal training. Reading and practicing gave me the skills and techniques to progress very quickly. I had been trying to learn drawing for several years, using a variety of teaching sources (including a good course by The Great Courses). However, I hadnâ€™t come across such a succinct and useful source until I started these books. See my attached photos an example of how I progressed since starting the books.â€¨â€¨The books are extremely well written - witty, in-depth, personable, and thorough, with excellent examples throughout. There is also a fair bit of what Iâ€™d call philosophical writing about creating artwork, which helps to connect technique to the wider questions of making art. Ms. Aristides also discusses a lot of common problems and challenges that beginning artists encounter, and her ideas are very helpful. Thereâ€™s a reason this book and Lessons in Classical Painting: Essential Techniques from Inside the Atelier are so highly reviewed!

I have two previous books by Juliette Aristides - both are overviews of painting and drawing (no easy task) this book focuses a little more on technique and specific exercises. The highlights:a. beautiful reproductions and well chosen examples of master drawings both from old masters and contemporary artists.b. insightful commentary. Although this is about technique - Aristides never loses sight of the 'big picture' (which by the way is an essential technique!)c. More in-depth surveys' of drawing techniques including master copying, rythmn and line.There is no substitute for an atelier and working with a master, but this book is as close as it comes.In her book "the creative habit" Twyla Tharp recounts a story of a master ballerina coming to a basic dance class and going through the 'basics' at the barre. She goes on to say that masters always practice and never lose site of the fundamentals. For that reason alone all artists, beginners and especially advanced artists, should have this on their bookshelves.There are a LOT of drawing books out there, but this is one of the best published in recent years.

Perhaps the best asic drawing insight sine â€œDrawing on the Left Side of Your Brainâ€ br Betty Edwards yet not as in depth as the Text books of Columbia University Life Drawing guru Beverly Hale which if you can find you will pay. But the real one might be used with class notes but Hale was a master at showing how drawing is the basis for all painting and drawn media.

Aristides goes chapter-by-chapter through every stage of the drawing process from planning and measuring to blocking the major shapes to final touches. Many beautiful illustrations help to get through the slower parts. The thorough instructions, explanations, and technical tips are the reason I would recommend this book to a beginner (like myself). The book uses art historical references and classical design principles to demonstrate how and why the works of great masters have survived many changes of taste and remained relevant.The book contains a lot of practical information about drawing supplies and techniques; very clear explanations of sight-size method, measuring (with a knitting needle or a piece of paper), identifying main lines and angles in the drawing, using plumb line to establish a vertical, and so forth. The book is printed on glossy paper with high-quality illustrations. There's also a DVD with drawing lessons.This is third Aristides book I bought, in part because reading her books is like talking to a like-minded person.

Juliette is a fantastic teacher and this like her other books is wonderful. The DVD was very good as well. In fact we actually used it for one session of a Classical Drawing class. My instructor knows Juliet but has never seen this book or the DVD. It was very inspirational. I am a devotee of learning classical methods which are not easily found in our part of NC. This book helps me augment my training.

This an excellent resource for anyone interested in classical drawing and the method of the Atelier. It is beautifully written and is simply a beautiful book to look at. It is not however a step by step type of art book, and if that is what you are looking for you will be disappointed. It will not tell you exactly how to do this one thing or that one thing, but instead will tell you how to do something generally. If you are diligent and read carefully and apply the ideas to your drawings you will see significant improvements in your drawings. I strongly encourage that you also get her other book Classical Drawing Atelier: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Studio Practice to go along with this one. Flipping through the beautiful pages of either book energizes me to get up and draw!!!

This book is outstanding in learning classical drawing!! There is a DVD that is included with this book which really makes it a great value and it helps in showing technique! I can't even begin to express how useful this has been in helping me with tone and value within my drawings. I wished I would have picked this book up before I started my drawing class because it would have saved me a lot of frustration. I was making the same mistakes over and over until I watched this dvd and could clearly see what I was doing wrong. Now I must try and undo what I thought was correct and relearn. I wished I would have been taught this way of drawing from the very beginning! Buy this book and dvd, you will not regret it!

I usually get two guide books for every trip I take, Lonely Planet and DK (recently I started to try out Fodor's. I don't think I like it because its layout or format is kind of confusing. Maybe I'm not used to it yet). Compared to DK, LP is much more detailed in my opinion, but DK offers more photos. I felt compelled to write a review because I found DK is getting harder and harder to read due to its extremely small font, especially the description next to a photo or illustration). Maybe I'm getting old and need reading glasses (in fact my husband said he couldn't read anything on DK, lol). After reading it for a while, my eyes just start to hurt and I don't feel like reading it anymore. I don't know why the publisher make the font so small. I would imagine older people would have a hard time reading it. BTW, I'm 41-year-young :)

I really like eyewitness travel guides. I got the same book when I went to Rome 15 years ago. I am using it again on this trip. One thing I did notice, that in 15 years my eyesight has declined. And it's very difficult to read the small print. Oh well, maybe one of my younger travel companions will be able to read it for us. Hey, Eyewitness! If you read this, please give us Kindle versions. Makes it much easier to travel with your guides. That way we don't have to lug around these heavy (1.5lb) books. Then I could also adjust the text size. (This is why this guide loses 1 star in my review)

Great Pictures. Information seemed dated.Large heavy book. Better information available in the Fodors book which is a pound less. The pictures are beautiful and this would make a good coffee table or bookcase book, but not a good book to travel with. I couldn't find operating hours quickly for attractions. It annoyed me that I could not find the info in a logical place.

The indexes are so inadequate that the book is only minimally useful. Why on earth is it too difficult to do them well? I am required to search and look for cross indices and find after standing on the street looking for references to what I am looking for and finally then find only the most minimal information on what I am looking at? I found the guides far more frustrating than useful. I would not buy these guides again when I travel.

This was so handy and easy to use. Love the way the book is organised by areas of the cities. Really liked the foldout map with the color-coded walking only streets. The book fit easily into my purse. The travel tips in the back, specific to Budapest were spot on and very helpful. Having the book added a lot of confidence for us navigating a big city on our own. Will most definitely be buying similar Top 10 books for other travel destinations.

I have been using this DK rome book for the last 15 years, so I know all the versions. This 2019 is a complete revamp. I suggest the 2018 version. The changes are: no more glossy pages (soft matte paper is used); no restaurant section in the back (they are interspersed on every page); elimination of almost 50 pages of history; a language section that is hilariously small print (I put on glasses to see it and still could not). In short, the changes to this book make it rather ordinary, and even hard to use. Even an image of the Pantheon mislabels where Raphael's tomb is. As someone who ordered this book annually, I can just say that the beauty, style, and colorfulness of this edition has been destroyed, and I urge all buyers to think twice before purchasing the 2019 version. I can't imagine going to Rome without some introductory history, and the editor of this new version must have been literally out to lunch when approving the new version.

Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel are my favorite series of travel guides. DK produces the most detailed and beautiful photographic guides. I have one for every country or city Iâ€™ve visited since first discovering them 18 years ago while living in the UK. I still buy the books for trip planning (and the gorgeous visuals), but now I also purchase and download the Kindle version of their 'Lists of 10 Top' guides for the specific location to lighten my luggage load.

COMPLETELY outdated. I looked up a few things online for further information and of the handful I checked, all but one were closed -- and had closed years ago.

I know its silly, but I feel like I am being somewhat artistic when I do some of these nail art designs. Its fun and creative, some take a bit of time but its worth it for the feeling of accomplishment and plethora of compliments!

One of my favorite Nail Art books, with a ton of ideas on how to put style on your nails. You'll be the talk of the town and really enjoy the different ideas on how to do your nails. I highly recommend it. Came to me In a timely fashion and packed well.

I would consider this a small glimpse into the world of nail art. Its a small sampling of basic designs. Photos are great, and the instructions make sense. If you're just getting started in nail design, this is a good tool.

Got this for my step daughter and she loved it she in the age of 14-17 so she likes the nail art and she has tried a few from the book so it made a good gift!

My daughter loved this book. She tried a couple of the designs right away. Easy for a 15 year old to use.

super cute. bought for spa birthday party for girls to pick out nail designs...would buy again.

Its quality goes beyond the appetizing pictures, the beautifully written stories and the delectable recipes.My wife is from Hanoi and we spend a lot of time with her family who still lives there. We find a taste of Hanoi in this book, something most celebrated cookbooks sold in the West are lack of. Oftentimes, Vietnamese cookbooks are written by people who are not from Vietnam or who spend most of their lives away from the country and thus, their interpretation of Vietnamese culture, philosophy, cuisine and way of life can be distant from what's really going on there. The authors of this book are much more rooted with their Hanoian origin; their recipes as well as philosophy and point of view when it comes to cooking Vietnamese food are much closer to what I find with my in-laws in Hanoi.Perhaps the biggest question in bringing a cuisine outside of its country of origin is how to balance authenticity, adaptability and creativity. In this book, authenticity comes from the philosophy and tastebuds that the authors/chefs developed through their Vietnamese upbringing. Adaptability comes naturally from the fact that they spent their adulthood in some of the most diverse metropolitans in the world - New York and London - and the authors are open-minded enough to tweak their recipes to include ingredients and way of cooking to a lifestyle that most of us can identify with. That's a pretty big promise in my house since I'm feeding 5 boys and a husband and our schedule is correspondingly bonkers. I let the boys go through the book to decide what each of them wanted to try. Let's just say I have a list that is pretty darned long. So far, I've tried the Fiery Orange Shrimp Pasta (page 85), Maple Herb Roasted Carrots (page 135), and Lemon Lover's Pound Cake (page 167). All of them have been hits. The whole crew loved the pasta, I ate 2/3 of the roasted carrots before they managed to hit the table, and *ahem* had to make the Lemon Lover's Pound Cake two days in a row because I intended to serve it to company the next day and we polished it off the day we made it. I'm not even sorry.So to the question of whether it is indeed family-friendly, I can say unequivocally that it is. Is it simple? Yep, it's that, too. The recipes in the book are organized by the amount of time it takes to make them, and so far, each of the recipes I've tried fits into its time category quite neatly. As an experienced cook, I'm coming in right at the fastest window of time Mary has specified in the book. The categories are 15 - 25 minute meals, 30 - 45 minute meals, and 5 - 10 minute prep meals which have added cooking time, but only require the specified amount of hands-on time. This makes time management in the kitchen a piece of Lemon Lover's Pound Cake, folks.I've ordered copies for Christmas for some of my busy mama friends already. I think I am going to pop a few more in my cart for my friends who work like crazy but still want to eat home cooked meals from real, whole foods as often as possible. Oh! That's the other thing I really wanted to mention; this book doesn't use pre-made mixes or a bunch of processed ingredients. It is all from scratch, including the spice blends she includes in the book as a bonus. This makes my heart so happy! I can cook from scratch "as simply as possible" -as the back of the book says- and still make my mouth, wallet, and stomach happy. You'll be so happy to have this one in your kitchen. I know I am!

I really like this cookbook and I appreciate the content. I have made at least 5 or 6 meals so far. My household is not large but the members are picky. I will admit I am not the best cook, just ok but I desire to be a better cook- at least this is my hope.What do I find helpful is that most of the dishes I have created so far don't require ingredients I haven't been able to find. I have read reviews that some found some of the recipes spices, I am not one for overly spices food and again the recipes are not that for me. However, if the use of a particular spice is too much for ones liking eliminate it.My family member doesn't really care for "spice" and I made the Cajun rubbed pork chop yesterday and it called for 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper so I used 1/8 tsp. I will come back and do an update this review once I have made at least 5 or 6 more dishes.

The best cookbook ever. I have already made 8 things one of them twice and they were all amazing. I made the pork medallions with wine sauce for my parents, they couldn't stop raving about it. If you are new to cooking or an expert this is a book for all.

This book is the most-used cookbook on my shelf and I've had it a week. Most cookbooks have sections you just don't use, because you just don't need that kind of recipe. This cookbook is arranged instead by prep time - 15-25 minute meals, 30-45 minute meals, set-and-forget types, and then sides/desserts/condiments (!).I've tried, so far, the chicken cordon bleu sliders (which my husband ate nearly all of) pork medallions in creamy wine sauce (drink the sauce with a spoon) crispy breaded fish with sriracha aioli (good stuff) creamy balsamic skillet chicken (oh.my.word) and raspberry almond coffee cake (no words. No shame for licking the cake pan, either). I also have made the cajun potatoes and the green beans, both grand.And that's only about a third of the recipes my family wants to try in the book.This book has a very wide range of people who would like it. It's a pretty healthy cookbook, there are always gluten free options, and yet everything looks pretty kid- and spouse- friendly. And the book is just beautiful.

Really interesting book! We homeschool and read this book as part of our history curriculum. It does a great job of explaining the historical context of Theodore Roosevelt's life so you really get a history lesson about the times as well as the man. The author also points out connections between this history and its influence on our modern politics and laws which is fascinating because so much of our modern life is rooted in the ideals and ideas of Theodore Roosevelt's era. You'll laugh along with and at Roosevelt (he was a man who loved to laugh), his humor and idiosyncrasies are skillfully illustrated and brought to life for the reader. But the book doesn't sugar coat "the Colonel" (his preferred title in his post-presidential years) but explores his flaws and mistakes as well as his successes and redemptions. The book even brought me close to tears towards the end as Roosevelt dealt with the death of his son who was killed in World War I. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about Theodore Roosevelt and the Guilded Age in America. It is a great read for adults and young adults alike.

Albert Marrin is a wonderful writer and he brings history to life. I have read several of his books and he has never failed to be informative and interesting. By the time you have finished the book, you feel as though you have met the person you are reading about. Unlike most biographies, he doesn't waste a lot of space on idle information. He gets to the point and gives you the important points while keeping the reader wanting more. I suggest all his books

I have read a lot about Roosevelt and didn't expect to learn much new, but being an Albert Marrin fan, decided to read the book anyway. Well, being an Albert Marrin fan, I should have known I would be learning a lot even if I had read a lot about Roosevelt. The reason being, he doesn't just focus on TR, he also talks a lot about the times in which he lived and the people around TR. This would be an excellent read for a high schooler studying US history or the 20th century. I would make any of Albert Marrin's works must reading for those in honor classes or AP.

Very difficult vocabulary. Bought for middle schooler but written for college grad.

Once again Albert Marrin serves up a birds-eye view of American History. It entertains and informs us, as we learn more about Teddy Roosevelt, arguably one of our country's most colorful presidents.

Penned by a terrific writer, Peter Maas ("The Valachi Papers," "King of the Gypsies"). This book is an excellent showcase for Mass's well-honed skills: excellent narrative, well-drawn characters, great dialogue, subtle humor, and under-the-microscope detail (meticulous, but never too fussy).Unfortunately, I read this book about 20 times or so before I saw the movie (directed by Sidney Lumet and released in 1973, starring Al Pacino, who gave a good performance in the title role). Peter Maas must be one of the most cinematic novelists of all time, which means that, more so than most novels I've read, I saw this novel, very lucidly, as a movie in my mind, over and over, as I read this book, over and over. What Sidney Lumet put up on the screen couldn't begin to compare with what I saw in my mind as I read the book.On the other hand, I've never been much of a Sidney Lumet fan ("Network," "The Verdict," "The Morning After"). I've never thought much of his in-your-face dullsville mainstream liberal speechifying and his no-directorial-style "style." Not to mention that Lumet left out of the movie many of the best parts of the book.-----------------------------------Oh me oh my, I just finished reading the above and it seems to focus more on the movie than the book.Getting back to the book: I LOVE THIS BOOK. Go out and get it. Even if you're not interested in cop novels or cops in general (although Frank Serpico was no typical cop). Think of it as an excellent biography (you do like biographies, don't you?).

As a whistleblower myself, I found Frank Serpico's story particularly compelling. It's an interesting read and well written. I also love that my copy was autographed by Frank Serpico.

Any book by Peter Maas is well written and worth reading, as is Serpico,but the only thing wrong with this book is they're no photos; takes somejoy out of reading it.

Serpico is an interesting and well written book about the struggles Frank Serpico faced while trying to be an honest cop among the corrupt practices which were ongoing at the time in New York City. His struggles ultimately led to the Knapp Commission and reforms at the NYPD, and set the stage for ethical reforms in policing across America.

This is the story of ONE honest cop/detective that actually tried to clean up crime in the "Big Apple" and got a bullet in his head thanks to his fellow officers due to his bringing in the FBI to clean up the NYPD itself....full of corruption!!!!!This man deserves to be awarded the MEDAL OF HONOR.......strong words, yet few people in the history of our country have sacrificed as much as him and very unfortnately, only lip service is given in support by the Congress of the United States.Frank Serpico is a modern AMERICAN HERO of the HIGHEST ORDER!!!!!!!By the way, Mr. Serpico has to live in a foreign country to protect himself from taking a finalizing "hit" from friends of the corrupt officers of the NYPD.....I'm not saying ALL the officers are corrupt but far too many are!

Well-written biography about an amazing man who, although he was afraid for his life, went ahead and did the right thing anyway. And in doing so, changed police departments all over the country for the better.

This novel takes place in southern India and follows the life of the twins Esthappen and Rahel. It is 1969 and the Marxist Uprising is very prominent in the state of Kerala. Through a series of flashbacks and present day scenes, Roy creatively illustrates the unbecoming of their family through secrecy, loss of innocence, and tragedy.This was one of the best books I have had to read for a class. It throws the twins into a situation they never dreamed of being in and shows how one personâ€™s mistakes can affect an entire family. While reading, you slowly begin to see the children lose their innocence and trust in the good things that their world has to offer, which ultimately hardens their hearts.The conclusion of this novel was very tragic and made me cry. When you learn who the â€œGod of Small Thingsâ€ is it makes you so happy but you also know what is going to happen and it is so upsetting. But once the twins are reunited as adults, they realize that there was always that special connection between them, even if it isnâ€™t the connection you expect.Royâ€™s work successfully shows the corruption of Indiaâ€™s current Love Laws and Caste System. She breaks down borders and builds her characters around these strict laws but allows them to step out of bounds. Through her social commentary, Roy thoroughly describes to the reader what needs to be changed in India. Roy is a fresh and strong voice that stands up against the laws of her land, showing others that change is necessary.4.3 Stars

I want to read it, but in thinking about that book, I remembered her remarkable debut novel, The God of Small Things, which was published twenty years ago in 1997. I had read the book back then, but in recalling it today, I found that its details had blurred and I wanted to read it again. And so I did.It was even better the second time around. Perhaps my life experience in the last twenty years has given me a greater appreciation of the story.Roy's luminous prose makes reading an unadulterated pleasure, even when she is describing the tragic events of this tale. The story of fraternal ("two-egg" in the language of the book) twins Esthappen and Rahel and their childhood in the state of Kerala in the southern tip of India, as they try to understand and come to terms with their fractured family and as they learn to their eternal sorrow that the events of one day can change things forever, is a story which everyone who has ever been a child should be able to relate to.Moreover, I thought the structure which Roy gave to the story was absolutely brilliant in its conception and execution. She begins the story at its end and ends it at its beginning and, throughout, the action slips effortlessly back and forth between the present and the beginnings in 1969.The twins and their mother, Ammu, had returned to the family home in Ayemenem after the mother divorced her abusive drunkard husband. But because of the divorce, she is considered an outcast and she and her children are resented by the family, especially by her aunt, Baby Kochamma, a woman whose own desire for love has been thwarted.In fact, everyone in this fraught household has been thwarted in love in one way or another.Ammu's brother, Chako (Rhodes scholar, pickle baron, and radical Marxist), had married a woman in England but after their daughter was born, the first bloom of love faded and she left him for another man. Then, he, too, returned to Ayemenem.Ammu's and Chako's mother, Mammachi, is a widow, now blind, who was regularly beaten by her husband with a brass pot when he was alive.In this atmosphere of frustrated desires, Ammu must try to raise her children and give them happy lives.The caste system is still very much a part of society in India in 1969 and it pollutes relations at every level. The twins have a friend, teacher, and protector in Velutha, a member of the Untouchable caste. He is someone who grew up with their mother. The two children love him by day, but, in secret, their lonely mother loves him at night. It is, of course, a forbidden love and one that can only end in grief.The catalyst for the tragedy to come is the Christmas visit to the home by Chako's ex-wife, Margaret, and his beloved daughter, Sophie. It's impossible to further describe the plot without spoilers. Suffice to say that no one escapes unchanged.Roy loads her narrative with foreshadowing so that one feels a constant sense of trepidation and anxiety. When the worst happens, it is hardly a surprise and yet the reader is still devastated.What strikes me as most tragic is not so much the suffering of these flawed characters, but the fact that such suffering is so commonplace. We are reading of the effects of the caste system in India in the 1960s; it might just as easily be about racism, misogyny, xenophobia in America today. Human nature has not improved in the last fifty years. In that regard, sadly, Roy's story stands up very well to the passage of time.

Arundhati Roy, in his tale of â€œtwo-egg twins,â€ weaves a story that will stay with you and grow long after youâ€™ve put it down. Roy brings the Indian valley around Ayemenem to life with a power and depth that reminds me of Steinbeckâ€™s rendition of the Salinas Valley. Its heat, smells, wildlife suck you with an intensity far deeper than the â€œvast, violent, circling, driving, ridiculous, insane, unfeasible, public turmoil of a nation.â€ It is a book for those who love being carried deep into the time and place that shape the destinies of the characters.Rahel and Estha who, though they are â€œtwo-egg twins,â€ share each otherâ€™s inner lives as they grow up in a world shaped by their mother, Ammu, their Uncle Chaco, their grandaunt, Baby Kochama, and the Paradise Pickle and Preserves factory owned by their grandmother, Mamachi. The world of Small Things. As the story opens, they are returning to Ayamenem as adults split from each other by a past shaped in some way by the death of their cousin, Sophie Mol.We then return to the world of seven-year olds on their way to the airport to meet Chacoâ€™s British ex-wife, and their cousin, Sophie Mol. Through their eyes, we learn with them the adult world, where western culture has descended via television onto the already chaotic colonial mix of Indian and British. Estha wears his â€œElvis puff. His â€œSpecial Outing Puff.â€ Rahelâ€™s hair is held by a â€œLove in Tokyo,â€â€”two beads on a rubber bandâ€”and her â€œAirport Frock.â€The story of the tragedy that ended that visit unfolds slowly through the lives of the household as each stumbles through the incoherent mix of language and customâ€”The God of Big Things. The children learn the mix of English and Indian culture along with universal adult axioms (control your Hopes, not doing so is a Bad Sign) with an innocence that makes its incoherence hilarious and heartwarming. They fill us with joy and dread. They are, as their mother sees them â€œsmall bewildered frogs engrossed in each otherâ€™s company, lolloping arm in arm down a highway full of hurtling traffic. Entirely oblivious of what trucks can do to frogs.â€And inevitably, it happens. The mix childish misadventure and Big God tabu that comes crashing down in an afternoon on the river is horrifying and devastating. We have come to love these people and feel a part of their struggle to make sense of the world.
