Review

"Houstonians have for years depended on My Table for the scoop on what's going on in the city's swirling food scene, so The Ultimate Food Lover's Guide is required reading for what's best, newest and most enduring in town. And if, like me, you are an out-of-towner or occasional visitor, there is nothing so comprehensive or accessible as the Guide to find any kind of food or restaurant over the course of a quick trip or long stay. Everything that counts is within these pages, from barbecue to haute cuisine, mirroring the extraordinary ethnic diversity of Houston with real panache." --John Mariani, Esquire Magazine food & travel columnist

About the Author

Teresa Byrne-Dodge has been writing about Houston restaurants for more than 27 years, first as restaurant critic for the Sunday magazine of The Houston Post (1984-1988), then as restaurant critic for Houston Metropolitan magazine (1988-1992) and Houston Life until it folded in 1995. Since 1984, she has written hundreds of freelance articles for such publications as The New York Times, Food & Wine, Texas Monthly, Texas Highways, Restaurant & Hotel Design, Southern Living and many others. From 1995 to 1996, she was the on-air restaurant critic for KHOU-Channel 11's morning news show in Houston. Her restaurant reviews appear in a number of books as well, including Jerry Herring's Guide to Houston and Mariani's Coast-to-Coast Dining Guide with America's Best Critics. She was also the Houston-based editor or coordinator for all print editions of the Zagat Houston Restaurant Survey through 2002. In June 1994, with a $3,000 nest egg, Byrne-Dodge launched a bimonthly 12-page dining-out publication called My Table: A Critical Guide to Dining in Houston. Response to My Table was immediate and enthusiastic. Today it is a 64-plus-page magazine read by some 26,000 food-loving Houstonians.

This is a great resource for local foodies or just people who want to have a bit of flavor on occasion. While I live in the metro area, I do not live in Houston itself- its Fort Bend county for me! This guide helps me to find new and fun places to eat when I am in town (very frequently- I work in the medical center and am often in town on Sunday as well), or fun knowledge about little local gems like the Houston Dairymaids. Just reading the section on food markets has me planning to not eat out again for a long time so that I can indulge....but then the section on eateries does the opposite!I love that this is not a bulky, heavy, thick book. I've seen food guides that are- no one is going to want to carry that with them, or refer to it enough to get their moneys worth! This is not too thick, printed on quality semi-gloss paper, so it has a little bit of weight to it, but it is not at all heavy- more of just having a presence. I love the photos, and the writeup are grade A-human: exactly what someone might say in conversation, so its easy to ready, even easier to understand the point, and approached from the viewpoint of an average person doing the evaluating. This all serves to make the book highly accessible and highly valuable. My only problem is that its not truly current- it is the latest edition (3rd), but several years have passed since then. I'm sure My Table will be coming out with another edition in a year or several (it is quite the undertaking- can I help??). However, even with the date of publication being a few years behind, the information inside is still extremely helpful, as well as several of the comments include plans the restaurant or shop may have for the coming years (expansions already in progress, etc), so it really keeps up quite well.Seriously, this is my new favorite book.....

Great product - Love it!!

I haven't read the previous editions, so I can't compare them, but this one has a lot of tried and true favorites as well as plenty of new places to try! Can't wait to start crossing some of them off the list.

Great book with good detail and describe of all restaurants eateries markets etc in houston. Not from houston it's been a great help trying to find new and exciting places to go.

Outstanding book

Assessments of the ethnic food offerings in this vast city are pretty limited. Instead, there are suggestions for lots of fried foods, standard fare, and the expensive hot spots. We did better with Yelp and Trip Advisor.

I bought my son-in-law an earlier version of this for his birthday, and this is on his Christmas list for this year. They enjoy going to new places to eat and this is their go-to reference guide. They have never been disappointed.

Teresa Byrne-Dodge and her team at MyTable have been notable experts on the Houston food scene for many years. This book is a must-have for food lovers interested in exploring Houston's restaurants, grocers, bakeries, and more.

This isn't just one story-- it's several. Bill Hayes writes movingly about the love he shared with Oliver Sacks, in ways that reassure all of us that great love is not only possible in life, it transcends all barriers, all challenges, all doubt and darkness. "Insomniac City" is also a love story about New York, told not only with exquisitely poetic words, but through the author's beautiful photographs, each one a kind of visual novel about the people and parts of New York City. But most of all, this is a love story about life, about finding the strength to pick yourself up after loss or defeat and dare yourself to live and love again. No one will be able to put this book down at the end without feeling profoundly grateful for every word, and every moment.

I couldn't put the book down. It is just as Maria Popova of BrainPickings described - unbearably beautiful. The photography by the artist/author Is soul shifting. Mr Hayes's sensitivity and emotional intelligence is beyond brilliant - evident through his delicate depictions of fragile human gems that are hidden in broad day (and night) light around New York City.I have read and admired Oliver Sacks for a long time so it was especially touching to see his human side from the eyes of a loved one. A wonderful love story. A page turner.

Last year I enjoyed reading Oliver Sacks' memoir, On The Move, published very near his death. In that excellent volume, Sacks described the process of finally coming out as a gay man and embarking upon his first relationship in thirty-five years. This particular relationship, with the writer/photographer Bill Hayes, would sustain and delight Sacks until the end of his life a few short years later. Insomniac City describes the final years of the good doctor's life from Hayes' point of view. In addition, it is a nearly poetic description of the author's blossoming love affair with New York City, where he moved just before meeting Dr. Sacks. Some of the most enchanting passages relate delightful episodes in the daily life of this most fascinating of American metropolises. I enjoyed this book immensely, and reveled in the author's masterful juxtaposition of the tale of his two great loves: Oliver and New York.

I loved all Oliver Sacks' accounts (read all books & NYT articles), so anything speaking of Sacks' life would be readable. Bill Hays is readable, but he's not an Oliver Sacks in being truly astonishing & amazing. I did not mind his account of a homosexual relationship w/Dr. Sacks, who previously had been celibate for 35 years. If such a subject would personally bother you, do not read this account of the much loved Sacks. Of these accounts, Hayes restrains himself to the "acceptable," leaving aside anything "too intimate." Although one might question the motives of this account, I was happy to see that Dr. Sacks received some thoughtful human affection in his last years.

I started reading this in the morning and couldn't stop. It's extraordinary.

In this fascinating and engaging memoir, author, Bill Hayes, beautifully interweaves a charming and intimate portrait of his beloved Oliver with the charm and mystique of New York City and its inhabitants. Simple yet poignant photos enhance his vivid and colorful descriptions of everyday New York life - enough to transport me, a die-hard suburbanite, to the urban wonders of his Manhattan neighborhood. What impressed me the most, however, was the blueprint for life that he and Oliver shared.  From their frequent travels to their apartment rooftop rituals, they lived even the most minute details of life to the fullest.  Well done Bill! I enthusiastically recommend Insomniac City!

Bill is a good writer who is gay. He falls in love with Oliver Sacks and finally it seems that Oliver is able to have a relationship with a man who loves him. Bill has recently moved to New York after his lover died. He connects with life in New York and writes a series of small stories about this as well as about his love affair. The book is delightful and after I had read Sacks book I was happy that at the end of his life he got to have such a meaningful relationship.

A simply charming evocation of a special love affair with the great man, Oliver Sacks, and also with the great city. Very special piece of writing, very special writer/human being.
