This is the same book that my mother used to read to us when we were little. Very fun to read it again with an adult eye.

i take care of my daughter and a little boy, both two years old, and i am teaching them about other cultures (one a month) for... well, forever. right now part of their education is traditional stories from each we study.this book is PERFECT for that!!! this is exactly what you expect from the description. it includes the stories peach boy, the magic teakettle, monkey-dance and sparrow-dance, the long nosed goblins, the rabit in the moon, the toungue-cut sparrow, silly saburo, the toothpick warriors, and the sticky-sticky pine.the illustrations are pretty small- at least not full page, but the kids love it as much or more than any of their massive colour packed picture books.highly reccomended for anyone who would like to have a really great little collection of traditional japanese stories

I remember my mom reading these stories to me when I was in elementary school. I kind of wish that the cover wasn't a removable jacket -- the original version of this book had the cover printed on, so it didn't require a jacket. I know that there is a version available with a CD for listening and follow-along, but that version seems to lose some charm. All in all, the stories are translated from original language quite well, and I look forward to the day when my little one can listen to the stories without ripping the pages.

Really cute interesting stories that are unique to the culture. Good introduction for my grandchildren before moving to Japan.

My kids have some Japanese heritage, and I want them to learn about their heritage and read stories that I did as a kid. This book includes stories I'm not familiar along with the very famous Momotaro (Peach Boy). The stories are relatively long with VERY limited pictures. However, my 4 year old loves it. The morals are often about not being greedy or mean.

Love this book. So many cute stories with life lessons.

Received in great condition, exactly as described

A favorite from my childhood.

This is a family favorite. I bought this book when our Navy family wasstationed overseas in Japan! I read it often to my first son, MY PeachBoy! Now his wife is pregnant with their first son---and I have boughtanother copy for him. I know my son and his family will enjoy sharingthis, and it will become part of the fabric of childhood once more!HIGHLY RECOMMEND this wonderful Japanese classic. ENJOY!

From School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up—This haunting insight into a little known epidemic from the early 20th century provides statistics, firsthand accounts, pictures, and an easy-to-follow narrative of the pellagra outbreak in the United States. The book details the baffling uprise of pellagra, a life-threatening disease characterized by weakness, rash, and insanity; the medical investigation that ensued; and the eventual changes that were made in America's diet to combat both this sickness and other maladies caused by nutritional deficiencies. This title is descriptive and well researched, with a striking bold-red color scheme. Though the images are graphic and potentially disturbing, they are not sensationalized, and enhance the narrative. This is an excellent addition to nonfiction collections in school and public libraries. [Ed note: See author Q&A, p. 16.]—Tammy Turner, Centennial High School, Frisco, TX

From Booklist

Jarrow delves into the debilitating and oft-forgotten disease that became a public health crisis in the U.S. early in the twentieth century. Pellagra, an illness that causes a menacing red rash, gastrointestinal issues, and eventual delirium and death, was unheard of in America when cases began to surface in the South, especially in orphanages and sanitariums, in 1902. Scientists and physicians raced to find an explanation for its accelerated virulence, in the process exploring new ideas about germ theory, food safety, and cleanliness. It was not until a young epidemiologist named Joseph Goldberger began to analyze data regarding nutrition did people begin to understand the cause as being a simple vitamin deficiency. While the book’s main subject is epidemiological, it is also a case study on innumerable social issues of the day, such as the industrialization of the American food supply, the rise of sensational journalism, and the treatment of the poor, the ill, and the elderly. A visually dramatic medical mystery, this is cross-curricular and of high interest. Grades 5-8. --Erin Anderson

I found the book to be quite fascinating. I'd heard of pellagra before but I didn't know any of the details. I had no idea that those who developed it had such severe symptoms leading for some to eventual death. And the solution was relatively simple and yet it took so long to find it. And when it was found it took even longer to convince some doctors that the solution was correct. Sigh. Human beings can be so stubborn sometimes! The author does a nice job of tracking the disease from its first recorded appearance in the U.S. to the changes made that pretty much eliminated the disease (at least in the U.S.). She makes the story more personal by sharing the experiences of individuals and the various results ranging from death to a yearly affliction. Some of the cures sounded worse than the disease, I mean, arsenic? strychnine? Thank goodness we've learned a lot since then.I have to say though that the photographs the author included in the book are particularly powerful. The nasty rash that the clearest symptom of the disease shines through clearly even in black and white photographs.A great read for those who enjoy real life mysteries and people who solve them.

This book was exactly what I wanted for the research I am completing for a project. It is written clearly and concisely, and it manages to make the science aspect more understandable and it is peppered with personal accounts throughout.

This was a very short book about a problem seen in the U.S. especially in the south in the late 1800's and early 1900's. This disease was pellegra. It usually occurred in people who ate predominantly corn products, so of course the first thing everyone thought was the corn (moldy) was responsible for disease, similar to how it was found out that mold on rye caused ergot and various mad dancing states... But in this book, the author talks about how taking away corn didn't seem to solve the problem. Then of course, those people looking into the reason for pellagra, noticed it mostly happened to poor farmers...so they figured it was cleanliness and some infectious organism like the plague. But in spite of all their looking, doctors and sociologists and epidemiologists, could not find anything that could pass pellagra from one person to another. And the doctors, like so many of them, did gross experiments on themselves and their friends, trying to infect themselves with pellagra. Didn't work.Luckily, a very astute epidemiologist working for the government started looking at not what was there in these people's diets, but what wasn't there in their diets. Like other diseases such as scurvy, many times what causes the problems are what we are missing. This continues today...so many people are getting so little Vitamin D that they are ending up with autoimmune problems such as fibromyalgia, which can be help by getting the right things in their diets. The book was interesting, but I objected to the formatting of the book. There were lots of pictures, maybe too many of them because they basically showed the same thing...people with red patches on their faces and hands and arms, with what looked like long red gloves on their arms. Then in between the text on how the cause of pellegra was found and what they did about it, the author kept putting little snippets about people who got pellagra, and either lived or died from it. After a while, it got very depressing to read all of these, and very repetitive.I got the information I wanted from the book...I think with a bit more input from a good editor, the book might have been better to read.

Great book. Recieved on time. Great working with you.

Not all readers enjoy nonfiction, but this is a cool way to hook them.

The stories of real people affected by this terrible disease were heart rending. The photographs included with the narrative were mesmerizing. Although the author tells an amazing story, her writing style is a bit pedestrian.

How many of you have heard of pellagra? Before reading Red Madness, I was unfamiliar with the disease. But reading it resolved a personal mystery for my husband's 85-year-old uncle. He finished the book and said, "Now I know what I had as a child."This disease which produces a horrible skin rash, leads to severe intestinal problems, causes neurological problems, and often leads to death, no longer afflicts wide portions of our population--the way it did during the first half of the twentieth century. Pellagra has been eradicated from most developed countries because of the tireless work of one physician: Joseph Goldberger. Red Madness by award winning author Gail Jarrow, describes how this medical mystery was solved.Written with clear language accessible to readers from age ten through adult, Gail Jarrow chronicles the history, myths, and treatments associated with pellagra. Dr. Goldberger's tireless efforts to determine the primary cause of pellagra included hosting "filth parties." In gruesome detail, Gail describes how Goldberger tried infecting himself with pellagra in order to prove that it was not contagious or a result of infection.http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/ncl2004004556/PP/"This Oklahoma sharecropper and his family pick cotton in 1916.The older two children--ages six and five--together picked twenty-five pounds of cotton a day.Goldberger tried to communicate his message about diet to farmers and mill workers, two groups that suffered from pellagra." (p.100)Since the disease appeared most often in poor households where diets were limited to 3-M's: meal (cornmeal baked into bread), meat (fatback, form the fatty layer on a pigs back) and molasses (syrup), Goldberger was convinced that pellagra was probably caused by a diet deficiency. But how could he prove that? Goldberger spent eleven years, traveling frequently in the South where the disease was most common, and performed experiment after experiment. In 1923 his efforts finally paid off. Experimenting with dogs who were experiencing pellagra symptoms, Goldberger fed them brewer's yeast (something missing from most pellagrins' diets). Quickly, the dogs recovered. In 1926 the Mississippi River flooded. 700,000 people lost their homes and 45-50,000 developed pellagra. The Red Cross took Goldberger's recommendation to add yeast to the impoverished people's diet. Within two months people were cured. After Goldberger died in 1928, other scientists continued searching for the vitamin that would prevent pellagra. Eventually, Conrad Elvehjem discovered that nicotinic acid (now known as niacin) was indeed, the pellagra-preventing vitamin. Ten years later bakers began adding niacin, along with other Vitamin B complex vitamins to bread. That was the beginning of the enriched bread we enjoy today.According to a recent Writer's Digest article, "Straight Up Nonfiction with a Twist," one way authors enhance text is by using sidebars for supplemental material. Gail and her team at Calkins Creek did an excellent job of interweaving newspaper headlines, facts, and photos such as this one into the body of the text."Some doctors referred to the butterfly-shaped rash on thegirls neck as the Collar of Casal, named afterthe first doctor to write about pellagra." (p. 83)In addition, dozens of case histories of individuals whose lives were torn apart by the disease, are sprinkled throughout the book.In a recent SCBWI, Bulletin article, "What Teachers Want from Nonfiction Authors," Alexis O'Neill said that teachers wanted authors to share about their research and writing process. Accordingly, I asked Gail a few questions about her process.Carol: What was it like for you to see the images of people afflicted with pellagra and pulling them together for this book?Gail: Part of me approached this topic in a clinical manner. I have a background in biology, and I was fascinated to learn how a vitamin deficiency could lead to such dramatic physical symptoms. But when I read the accounts of patients’ suffering written by their doctors, I felt upset knowing this disease was so easy to prevent. Even after pellagra’s cause and cure were discovered—and publicized—people continued to fall ill and die. Many victims lacked the resources to eat properly or didn’t realize how diet affected their bodies. Tragically, other deaths occurred because some physicians refused to accept that pellagra was a diet deficiency disease.Carol: Was any part of this writing/publishing journey more difficult than another?Gail: The hardest part—and this is always the case when I write a non-fiction book—is locating and obtaining the primary documents. Those were key because secondary sources were contradictory about the early-20th-century understanding of pellagra, Joseph Goldberger and his research, and other details included in my book. Whenever possible, I go back to the original sources and do not necessarily trust what I read elsewhere. Too many times, I’ve found errors in the secondary sources. For more information on the nitty gritty behind writing this book, see the informative Author's Note at the end of the book and Gail's interview in the School Library Journal. Teachers, make sure you utilize the educational activities which Gail has assembled. With such a detailed analysis of the disease, what caused it, and the stigmas associated with the disease, Red Madness will be an excellent supplement to history, sociology, and science lesson plans.Read this book and maybe you'll discover answers to the mystery disease which left its mark on someone you know.

Gr 1–5—This colorful recipe book encourages children to eat a rainbow of vegetables for diverse nutritional benefits. Recipes are organized by food color, and each includes step-by step instructions with appetizing full-color photos that break up the instructions into manageable bites. The introduction covers equipment, a few foods, and basic preparation skills for items such as ginger, avocado, and garlic. Some difficult steps require grown-up assistance for younger cooks, but a reliance on store-bought crusts and doughs makes the recipes accessible for those new to the kitchen. The inclusion of food facts (for instance, eggplants are really large berries) keeps this title educational. I bought this book to help teach my intellectually disabled son better nutrition. It's well written, has great visuals and I really like the way it is set up by colors. It's a fun way to teach nutrition and even though he is an adult it's not too much of a "baby" book . I like the variety of recipes and that all of the ingredients are easy to find he is really enjoying it. I'd recommend this book for kids of all ages and also young adults.

Nice book. There is a little information about the health benefits of each color; I wish there was a little more of this info. And there's lots of pictures of fruits and vegetables for each color. Recipes are vegetarian and are not that bad. Good book to help kids learn and get excited about fruits and vegetables.

Great book!!! My son, who is 6, picked this book in a library one day and was refusing to return during next two months, that it is why I had to buy it. With this book we get regularly activity like cooking together, some of the recipes are great and our favorite. Thank to the author of this book and the seller of course for 5-Star delivery.

I really like this children's vegetarian cookbook. Using with an 8-year old. Easy to follow recipes, nice pictures with most steps, and also informative in general about food and cooking.

Great book for elementary age children. I bought for my grandchildren and the pages are colorful and easy for them to read. It makes eating the good foods inviting to eat and also to cook!

I got this last night and my daughter loves it already. She says it has lots of desserts, which is mainly what she was interested in, but she also asked for ingredients to cook one of the main dishes.

Fun & easy to follow. My 8-year-old niece was SO excited to start cooking!

A little too simplistic for my granddaughter on her 8th birthday. Might be great as a learning tool for younger children.

Alicia Afterimage, by Lulu Delacre

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up—Delacre has dedicated this slim volume to "all grieving teens," and while it is published as a work of fiction, the author's note explains that her 16-year-old daughter did, in fact, die in a car accident in 2004. She relates how her mourning process involved interviewing many of Alicia's friends about their relationship with the pint-sized, exuberant Puerto Rican American. Resources on teen grief and teen-driver safety, as well as a photo of Alicia, are appended. Though the point of view shifts from chapter to chapter, the narrative begins and ends with Alicia's mother, starting with the fateful night of the teen's date with a boy who speeds, loses control, and crashes into a telephone pole, killing her instantly. The chapters that focus on her friends, including the driver who survives the crash, don't provide any kind of cohesive narrative, reporting instead memories and events that form a two-dimensional portrait of Alicia: a perfect angel of a daughter, a true and fun-loving friend, a gifted dancer, and someone who always gave more than she took. Throughout the book, faint line sketches appear like shadows beneath the text. While reading the 13 nearly indistinguishable teen accounts of Alicia might be good bibliotherapy for those who have suffered a loss, this afterimage turns into an overexposure of pain that appeals to a sense of pathos without providing satisfaction as fiction.—Suzanne Gordon, Peachtree Ridge High School, Suwanee, GA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Delacre’s beloved 16-year-old daughter died in a car crash four years ago. In her first novel, the picture-book artist has fictionalized the words of 13 of Alicia’s real-life friends and family members, who talk about their grief and anger in a series of terse, third-person accounts. The spare interior monologues create a vivid collage portrait of the dynamic teen. The friends speak about how they met her and what they did together, from text-messaging to dancing, as well as the mementos they have of her mischief and loving support. The memories are of both small moments and big events, such as Alicia’s quinceañera. Mamá feels guilt (how does a parent balance freedom and protection?), and also anger at “The Driver,” a teen date who is never named and whose recklessness caused the crash. Every view of Alicia is perfect (“there isn’t anyone who doesn’t like her”), but idealization is part of the grieving process. With its messages about healing and a list of appended resources, this is an excellent title for grief counseling. Grades 7-12. --Hazel Rochman

People please don't miss this book--it's so important for us all, young & old alike! I'm sure just about everyone has lost someone close to them in a tragic way & even if you have not, please read this book to add to your arsenal of how to deal with life. So many of us faced with tragic circumstances stumble & flounder, but Lulu Delacre has given us a guide to help put one foot in front of the other & try to handle grief. Not only a tribute to her beloved daughter, Alicia Afterimage can help us learn how think about even little things in our lives to avoid disasterous reactions to stressful situations.Cathy Bonnell, LibrarianPhoenix, AZ

Alicia Afterimage sat next to my bed for a bit before I finally cracked it open. I'm not sure if I was avoiding becoming emotional or that I thought the stories would open deeper pains. I did indeed cry, but they were predominantly tears of joy in celebration of Alicia's marvelous life. For the chapters on people I know, their story resonated with me the most. I could picture exactly the bouncing ladybug dilly boppers in Baltimore, Alicia & Vicky's daily search for poptarts, and Alicia's expressive face that shared sympathy, excitement, and truth all wrapped into one. Although I could not fully relate to the stories of her other friends, I found comfort in knowing that other people experienced Alicia the way I did: full of love, heart, energy, and joie de vivre. She was gifted with the sincere ability to befriend all types of people and to add a unique spark to each of their lives. Her homemade cards and talent of listening was bestowed on all. The book provided me with a heartfelt snapshot into Alicia's multiplying effect of compassion on this world. No matter the social niche someone fit into, Alicia was there with a genuine smile. Thank you Lulu for creating such a beautiful work. You meld humor with sadness, joy with pain, and the result is a retrospective not only on God's great gift of Alicia, but a truthful narrative on teenage suffering. You did not shy away from the pain of Alicia's death, but you proved that celebration of her life and cherishing of our memories with her is one way that we can grieve. We cannot repress our emotions, rather in sharing them we can come closer together and ease the agony of Alicia's loss.

The author of this book suffered a terrible loss. Her daughter was killed in a car accident at the young age of 16. This is happening to teens each day all over the world. This book is a memoir of the author's daughter Alicia. It shares stories from her friends and family. It tells of how they are dealing with the loss and trying to heal each in their own way. I like the fact that it listed resources on teen grief and driver's safety at the end of the book. I would recommend this to all teens. I feel like they can all learn a lot from this memoir.

This book is primarily a book for teens about teens grieving the death of their friend. I could see how the process (the interviews and writing of it) would be healing for Alicia's family, friends, and classmates at school. It is written in 3rd person, which makes the mother seem a little detached, but it also makes for a kind of separation which is probably easier for a grieving teen to read and deal with. A book like this would have been very helpful for my teenage friends and I when we found out a week after graduation our friend Scott Boland had been killed in a car accident. I remember acutely the pain and confusion we felt. And how going to his funeral was the saddest thing I had ever had to do in my 17 years of living. As I read through the book I noticed that many similar themes with those of us dealing with the death of a smaller child. Seeing or hearing messages from our lost loved ones. Anger- and I was very curious how that would be resolved as to the driver of the car, who was a student at the same school. Not being able to say goodbye. Time too short with our childAnd then I came to the final chapter, the perspective of Mama. And was struck once again with the fact that the death of a child is the worst thing a mother can go through. No matter what age the child. And I felt I related to the changes the mother describes."She had gone through an event that shattered life as she had known it, and her priorites had shifted...She was no longer afraid of being hurt, for there could not possibly be any pain depper than that of losing a child. Her empathy grew...""In time Mama began to recognize the signs of a spiritual connection to Alicia- a ladybug in the most unlikely of places...And more vivid dreams. Mama became acutely aware of all these surprising occurrences that seemed to carry messages. So she began to heed her inner voice: She learned to act on her instincts, following her heart instead of her head."I'm glad I didn't just discard this book as a book for grieving teens. I'm glad to have read it; to again realize that our children are our children and their leaving us too early causes pain that a mother feels no matter how long she has with her child.SteppingStonesBlog.blogspot.com

"I much prefer Wilson's sincerity to the vague and Python-esque witterings of the interfaith and ecumenical groups who barely respect their own traditions. He is willing to maintain very staunchly that Jesus of Nazareth was the Christ and that his sacrifice redeems our state of sin."~Christopher Hitchens"More like a lumberjack than a pastor, even when he wears a suit."The New York Times"Doug Wilson jumped the shark a long time ago."~Jonathan Merritt"So just who is this twisted Doug Wilson creature, anyway?"~The Slacktivist"Quintessential Douglas Wilson... very good, very smart, and full of trademark winsome snark. God's people are better off for it. His enemies -- not so much."~Steve Deace, Nationally syndicated radio host "Profoundly insightful and biblically faithful. I have finished this absolutely fantastic book, I highly recommend it, I like Douglas Wilson, he always speaks brilliant things in a practical way.I love that he summarily rejected and rebuked the idea of being a, "nice", Christian but made it quite clear of the sheer laziness of that approach, especially since much of it is an attempt at social approval or fear of being what he, "cool shaming" but we Christians must remember that anything or anyone that is not with Christ, is against Him.He challenged Christian to develop a robust sense of humor, to not be offendable. The Rules for Reformers are as follows:1) Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever.2) Always remember the distinction between principles and methods.3) Reformers are conservatives, which means they must be prefer the concrete to the abstract.4) Reformers must cultivate a high sense of humor.5) Reformers must be combative.6) Reformers must play the long game.7) Reformers must be remember always that religion shapes culture, and culture trumps politics.I would encourage everyone to look up Douglas Wilson, he offers a different perspective on many of the issues of our day than the dichotomy that mainstream culture would like us to believe that there is.The fact is, the Christian needs to remember that we transform or reform the world by renewing our minds, we do this, by bringing every thought captive and to the obedience of Christ, because Christ is our hope and we must be able to give the reasons why He is our hope, thus be apologetist for Christ, the cross, Him crucified and risen again and that the only way to salvation is through Him and belief in His blood to justify us before God, and God's grace giving us faith to believe in Him, through His Word that is our sword to contend for our faith, the Spirit for our sanctification and for, by, and of the glory of God and it is not work of men but solely the work if God.In a world of radicals, we Christians must be Reformers and transformers of this world, not conforming to the world, but conforming to the image of God and Christ Jesus.

This review is for my brothers. You know who you are. You know we have a fight on our hands, a fight you and I will be engaged in unto the approach of the twenty-second century of our Lord. Now, a fight we know we have, yet, if we're honest, we also have an abundance of directionless generals. That's why I recommend this book. Wilson is not directionless. He's not dull of eye and weak of spine. His nose is not brown from too many bendings over to rump-kiss the powers that be.I believe this book is the most useful contemporary book for those men who want to fight and fight well, for those men who want to spend their lives as reformers.

I rarely finish books these days. I spend most of my time in the Scriptures because the reading of many books there is no end, and it wearies the body. But books by Douglas Wilson are different. He points me to paths I’ve missed. I feel stronger in the Lord and in the Word because of this book. It was not a waste of time. You should read this book. The first 1/3 is easy to read for any Christian, the middle 1/3 is hard and will offend most Christians (including me), but press through it because there is mind changing wisdom here, and the latter 1/3 is encouraging.I give thanks to God for this book.

Excellent. Doug Wilson wrote a quotable and wonderful book here. It should be read by anyone who is interested in Christian cultural engagement. Many great quotes and interesting strategies.

A few minor proof-reading issues, but a genuinely encouraging and entertaining read. Very uplifting for a generation of Christians who need to hear that it's ok (and even biblical) to throw themselves vigorously into the task of changing the world. Wilson as usual is earthy, direct and unashamed to move from theology to action. While I may not agree with him on all the finer details, I feel like Wilson says many of the things I think but have felt pressured by the world around me to shut up and keep quiet about.Theological or economic liberals are encouraged to wear a seatbelt.

It is shameful how the evangelical community has ostracized and alienated Wilson from a "seat at the table." This work is a demonstration of why he has created his own table with a greater prophetic voice than his naysayers.

Wilson cheerfully exposes and dismantles the opposition's strategies, and follows this up with a rebuilt gameplan for Christians, based on the truth of the Gospel rather than the Enemy's false narrative.

Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants, by Robin Wall Kimmerer

Review

“Robin Wall Kimmerer is writer of rare grace. She writes about the natural world from a place of such abundant passion that one can never quite see the world the same way after having seen it through Kimmerer’s eyes. In Braiding Sweetgrass, she takes us on a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise. She is a great teacher, and her words are a hymn of love to the world.”―Elizabeth Gilbert “Robin Wall Kimmerer has written an extraordinary book, showing how the factual, objective approach of science can be enriched by the ancient knowledge of the indigenous people. It is the way she captures beauty that I love the most―the images of giant cedars and wild strawberries, a forest in the rain and a meadow of fragrant sweetgrass will stay with you long after you read the last page.”―Jane Goodall “With deep compassion and graceful prose, Robin Wall Kimmerer encourages readers to consider the ways that our lives and language weave through the natural world. A mesmerizing storyteller, she shares legends from her Potawatomi ancestors to illustrate the culture of gratitude in which we all should live.”―Publishers Weekly “Robin Wall Kimmerer opens a sense of wonder and humility for the intelligence in all kinds of life we are used to naming and imagining as inanimate.”―Krista Tippett, host of On Being “The gift of Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book is that she provides readers the ability to see a very common world in uncommon ways, or, rather, in ways that have been commonly held but have recently been largely discarded. She puts forth the notion that we ought to be interacting in such a way that the land should be thankful for the people.”―Minneapolis Star Tribune “Braiding Sweetgrass is instructive poetry. Robin Wall Kimmerer has put the spiritual relationship that Chief Seattle called the ‘web of life’ into writing. Industrial societies lack the understanding of the interrelationships that bind all living things―this book fills that void. I encourage one and all to read these instructions.”―Oren Lyons, Faithkeeper, Onondaga Nation and Indigenous Environmental Leader

This book changed my life. I have been a gardener most of my life, and have felt a connection to nature even as a city dweller. But reading this book has deepened my experience of the natural world into a much more spiritual level unlike any other book I have read previously. The science is fascinating and understandable; the wisdom is awe-inspiring. It is a book that I open and read whenever I need to plant my feet on the ground again. I can't recommend this book more highly.

I was lucky enough to be a student of Dr. Kimmerer's at SUNY ESF. While there, I took every class she offered. Dr. Kimmerer has the kind of quiet voice that everyone hushes to hear, not wanting to miss a word of her eloquence. Reading this book has reminded me to cultivate my love for the Earth in ways that my daughters can participate in, and to recognize the relationship between people and nature as a two-way street. We do not simply destroy or protect nature - we evolved in direct relationship with plants, and plants evolved in direct relationship with us. As an environmental scientist, I like to think that I look at the world through a lens of love and concern for the earth, but this book pushes me further in love and hope and urgency.

This is not the "type of book" I would typically read, or thought I would enjoy. (I gravitate toward science, and abhor "storytelling). Nevertheless, this book was so highly recommended that I gave it a try. After only a few pages, I realized what a gift had so fortuitously come into my life. I fear I cannot adequately describe its profound essence -- part science, part wisdom, part communicator of the mysteries of animate "objects." All I can say is: read it and experience the magic for yourself. Thank you to all who took the trouble to recommend this book to me. I feel blessed and enriched for having read it.

This goes as a Top 10 Books of All Time in my opinion. Robin grew up in nature, was trained as a scientist, and returned to nature. This book seems to be the story of how she integrated these widely disparate traditions (scientific knowledge vs indigenous wisdom). For anyone who struggles with integrating science and naturalistic philosophy, this book may help illuminate the path along the way.As a medical student training in mainstream hospitals, this book is a lifeline. I read a few pages at a time and take notes along the way. I won't spoil it, but if you are thinking that maybe this book might be good ... it's good.

I cannot give this enough stars, because it would be 10 stars!Robin Wall Kimmerer is an amazing writer offering wisdom teachings from the plants and native teachings presented in a story that is her life's work. This book is a marriage of science based info and wisdom based teachings, and it is a work of art. If you love the planet and have ecology interests, you will love it. If you long for wisdom teachings, you will love it. If you appreciate great writing, you will love it.It is eloquent, sweet, profound and humorous while opening up the eyes of her readers.I thought of sending Trump a copy...This book is a keeper!

If you are looking for a book to make you fall back in love with the earth that gave you birth and nurtured you, if you are looking for a book that examines the great joys (and some sorrows) of daily living, if you are looking for a book that makes you pump your fists in the air and wake your sleeping partner, look no further - this is it! In a time of endless reductionism, rationalism, dissection of working wholes into unrecognizable pieces, and building walls between countries and disciplines, Robin Kimmerer is one of my new heroes: people whom I describe as 'the bridgers' - building bridges of thought, reason and spirit between areas that many are trying to view (and keep) as separate. This book worked at so many levels for me - parenting; teaching; life lessons; how we relate to the world; how we relate to each other; how language can (and does) shape the way we experience the world; what is the essence of 'reciprocity' in living; what gratitude looks like when we live from a place of gratitude; and so much more. This is one book I recommend to good friends with a money back guarantee attached to my recommendation - the book is THAT good! Buy it and enjoy.

I'm glorying in the thought of this gem being required reading for graduates of all ages. What a different world we'd all live in.First, rest assured this is a deeply enjoyable read. Also, this is how any subjects you wish to be understood and loved are best taught: in story.Robin has mastered storytelling. And, athough she is a relatively new weaver, she seamlessly weaves botany, ancient and modern history, humanities, ecology, linguistics and art. And this weaving is made uniquely beautiful by one long perfect strand that passes through every fiber: love.Love translates into beauty in form and function, passion and compassion, peace and contentment, respect and gratitude, effort and sweat,How many times have you found all those (and more) in one book? Reading this book will be an intentional step in the direction of all those things that give life it's purpose.

Beautifully written, as evocative as a deep drought from a forest stream. Kimmer braids together the wisdom learned directly from trees with that learned from the books printed on them. Reading this book is like coming home to where we've always been--nestled in the heart of the Earth that cherishes us, even when we forget that.I would give it 10 stars if I could.

Hayford Chancellor Emeritus, The King's University, Southlake, TexasJoyce's new series demonstrates that she writes as interestingly and beautifully as when she speaks. Her ability to apply truth to where people are in their daily lives is often sealed with a touch of brilliance. Caution: be prepared for your life to change after you read these commentaries.―Dr. R. James, A Biblical Commentary by Joyce Meyer is one of the nicest Biblical commentaries that I have used as a layperson. This commentary on James is especially user friendly. In the introduction, Meyer tells about James--when it was written and some of the history behind this book and the man who wrote it. Joyce then goes on to break the book of James down into chapters and expound on each one. She also includes space to ask yourself questions and to reflect on what you have read.Meyer's commentary on James is both beautiful on the outside and practical on the inside. The Biblical book of James is one of my favorites. I like her key reminder that we must have faith in God first and then we will do the good works that glorify Him. And that is the key, God is to get the glory and we are reminded that we don't and we need to have the faith to reflect Him to others. I truly appreciate Meyer's hard work to make this book so easy to understand and practical to use for the reader. I also like that there is space in the book to make notes and to remember my thoughts as I am reflecting on the book of James and her commentary. I highly recommend Meyer's commentary to anyone wishing to study the Bible in more depth.I received this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review.

Meyer's teaching is deeply rooted in the Word and it is no surprise that she would write Bible commentaries. This book is a good general devotional commentary on James. It is good for general audiences as it does not go into Greek. Meyer at times comments on one verse while at other times covers up to twelve verses in her writing. There is usually a personal reflection question at the end of each section with space for journaling although some sections do not have it.There are some areas of her teaching I particularly like. One is her teaching on contentment (on James 4:1-3). “I have discovered that the secret of being content is to ask God for what I want and to rest in the knowledge that if it is right, He will bring it to pass at the right time.” That really precludes the greed and selfishness James wrote about.Another area of her strong teaching is on the tongue and our words. This is an important area for Meyer and she really emphasizes the effect our words can have on others. We are to use our words to prove our faith and trust in God. She also has a good section on what it means to keep God first in our lives. A good way to do that is to have a continual conversation with Him, she says. This commentary would be good for new Christians or ones not very familiar with the Bible. Meyer writes about the truth of James in a very understandable way. She does not explore puzzling or complex issues, such as how turning a sinner from his way will save his soul from death (James 5:19-20). Readers will gain encouragement and inspiration from the book of James as Meyer explains the practical teaching contained in it.I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
