I'm halfway through the book and may update this after I finish. Here's what I learned, in short. The move of God was very real and powerful. When the former Calvinists broke of from the Presbyterian Church, they formulated the "schismatic" doctrines around which they garnered the "New Light" identity. Much of the teachings that came out of the true move of God would be considered bizarre, at best, and heretical at worst, nowadays. They are philosophical and have no fountain in scripture. Perhaps that's why many of the people who were subjects of the manifestations of revival, upon experiencing unresolved lingering patterns of remaining sin, believed themselves to be condemned. This was a genuine move of God, out of which came forth some dangerous and unbiblical teaching that hurt many people.Appendix:This book turned from a description of the Kentucky revival to an apologetic for Skakerism. True, Shakers did not deserve the mean spirited persecution, replete with lies about them, and harsh treatment, but that didn't excuse the error of their belief system.God moved in the revival, but man killed it off quickly, due to his pride. This reads like a manual of what not to do if there is revival. The title should read: The Kentucky Revival and how pride killed it.Reading the mindset of the period, I can understand how cults like Christian Science, JW, and Mormonism came about.
The Kentucky Revival by Richard McNeal is an interesting account of a true move of God which occurred largely in Kentucky, as well as parts of Tennessee, Ohio, and other surround states in the early 1800's, from 1800-1807. It is amazing to think of the things that took place in an area which was largely frontier at the time, with hundreds, if not thousands gathering in the wilderness to worship God, preach, give prophetic words, and allow God to change lives. Truly an amazing account. The book also discusses how this move of God caused religious persecution of these believers and how the group known as Shakers began. Lastly, an account of how American Indians found God was an interesting addition to this neat little book of history.
This book provides a detailed account of the revival in Kentucky around the 1803-1807 era. Because it has been updated into our more modern language, it is an easy read, however the update has not taken away the style of the author nor diminished the account. I have read other books about the revival in this time but found this one the easiest to read and one that keeps one's interest without going into long details about various opinions, etc. Especially interesting is the account of revival among the Indians which is found at the end of the book.
I enjoyed this book because it gives a window into early American religious history. Supernatural events took place during the early 1800's in Ohio, Kentucky, and eastern Virginia which had a powerful effect in the culture of those areas. Students of revival will see similar events in this book to revivals in Wales and the Hebridean islands of Scotland. Coarse men sometimes were very suddenly brought to their knees under conviction of sin and cried out to God for mercy.
It was an interesting read but, in my opinion, it needed the background history in order to appreciate it. It would have been better of the editor had provided some historical information. I was surprised to read that Barton Stone was against it as I falsely thought it was part of the revival in which he was involved. The last chapter regarding an account with a revival among an Indian tribe we very interesting.
I am a student of history both in the church and world history. I am also a student of revival. This book is a must to have.
This book details a piece of history much of the church denies ever existed. It is an eye witness account. It gave me real hope for what prayer can do. I am now praying daily for God to visit us like he visited Kentucky in the early 1800's.
Insider's look at the trials and hardships of the spreading Shaker Revival of Kentucky (and elsewhere) in the early 1800's. The author is very frank about what he witness, experienced, and thought.
