This book is pretty much worthless, because very few of the exercises work unless you have Visual Studio installed on a server with SharePoint 2013 that you can use to test. The exercises do NOT work against a SharePoint Online instance. Furthermore, even the SP Online exercises are outdated, because the SP examples depend on the Autohosted option, which is no longer available. The Azure examples are also outdated and do not work.It's very frustrating to attempt to do an exercise only to find out 1/3 or 1/2 way through that it will not work.I don't blame the authors or publisher for having outdated exercises. The world of development is changing so fast that it's nearly impossible for any printed manual to keep up. I'm sure at the time of it's writing, if you had a SharePoint 2013 instance and Vis. Studio installed on your computer, as well as a SharePoint Online account, (and an Azure account) then you'd get quite a bit out of this book.But, the reality is that SharePoint development is changing to the (Office Catalog) App model, and this book will not teach you how to develop for that scenario. I wish I had my money back, but more importantly I wish I had my time back.
So far this is the best SharePoint 2013 Development book on the market.You will get to learn how to develop SharePoint 2013 projects using Visual Studio 2012 and Napa, Microsoft's online IDE for developing Apps for the Cloud.You get a thorough understanding of what it means to created an Auto-Hosted App, SharePoint Hosted App, or Provider Hosted App. For those who don't know the new "App Model" is a complete paradigm shift from developing for SharePoint 2007 or 2010. By the time you are done with this book you will have the knowledge to start writing apps for SharePoint 2013 in an on-premise environment or for the cloud (Office 365). You will also learn how to write apps that can be deployed to Windows Azure and integrated into SharePoint 2013. You will then get exposure to the completely revamped Client-Side Object Model and REST APIs.I am about 3/4 done with the book and feel very confident in beginning my development with SharePoint 2013. Buy this book if you are looking to get up to speed quickly with SharePoint 2013. As the other reviewer stated don't be fooled with the "Beginning" in the title. Even if you are a SharePoint 2007 or 2010 veteran you will need to learn the new app model and this is just the place to start. Happy reading!! :)
As others have pointed out, many of the code samples won't compile or execute. That's disappointing, although pretty common for a programming book. The errata page on the publisher's site hasn't been updated recently. And the code samples must be downloaded.More annoying is the uneven writing style. Some acronyms are defined, others not; entire blocks of text are repeated without modification; screwy grammatical errors exist throughout. And the book is clearly written by fans of SharePoint, which is a mixed blessing: I could do with a little less boosterism, and a little more attention to detail.
I agree with several of the other reviewers that this book provides good information and insight about SharePoint development. However, if you plan to build the exercises, or download the code, you will be disappointed! It is likely that the book was written before the final version of SharePoint 2013 was released. As such, the directions are no longer valid and the code simply doesn't work. In some cases the directions are also incorrect and leave out important steps, code and variables needed for the examples to work. Unfortunately, the errata hasn't been updated to reflect the necessary changes and a recent download of the code was 'almost' worthless. I waited two months, as it bothers me to write a negative review, but I am doing so in case other customers plan to rely upon this book to quickly meet a project objective. That said, if you have plenty of time, and if you can get the authors to respond to questions on the Blog, this book may provide you with limited value. However, if you expect the code to work and the exercise steps to be complete, then do not buy this book!

It's a great material to start with SharePoint 2013. But it does lack in-depth look at everything. But it's a great one to start.
