About the Author

Bob Garrett is a Visiting Scholar at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He was Professor of Psychology at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and held several positions there, including Chairperson of the Department of Psychology, Faculty Development Coordinator, and Interim Dean of Academic Affairs. He received his BA from the University of Texas at Arlington and his MA and PhD from Baylor University. He received further training in the Department of Physiology at Baylor University College of Medicine and at the Aeromedical Research Primate Laboratory, Holloman Air Force Base. Bob lives on a 3,200-acre ranch he shares with 47 other families in the hills outside San Luis Obispo. His two sons and three beautiful grandchildren all live nearby.

This is a serious textbook and it is expensive. I purchased the loose-leaf version to save a few dollars. The pages are quite thin and delicate, so you need to take great care with the book. As to the contents, this is one very serious book for those students who want to learn about the works of the brain and how it MIGHT be linked to human behavior. It is not an easy read by any measure!

With over 700 reviews, why add one more? Because I think it is important to know that although the book is good, it has many, many anecdotes for mothers. If you aren't a mother, you may not identify much with the stories of shame. It took more over a week to read, and during that time, I kept finding myself in situations where I thought, "here I go again, shaming myself for not being perfect!" I thought that her book was poignant for me. However, I could have read and absorbed the book in 3 days if the references to motherhood had been deleted. I recommend Lucinda Bassett if you would like to learn more about shame and self-defeating thoughts. Ms. Bassett does write some anecdotes about her children and motherhood, but her message has wider appeal for women.

I've been intrigued with Brené Brown's work since I listened to her Ted Talk on Vulnerability. I finally got around to starting to read her books. I expected I Thought It Was Just Me (But It Isn't): Making the Journey from "What Will People Think?" to "I Am Enough" to be a reiteration of all the things I've heard her say in her talks and classes and in her interviews. It was that but it was also more. In fact, it was more than I expected or perhaps was ready for. I sat down intending to simply read the book and ended up deciding to take her advice and work through the exercises. I didn't always like the answers that arose for me, but it was worth the time it took. I Thought It Was Just Me (But It Isn't) pushed me to examine my thoughts and my attitudes toward shame and blame and vulnerability and strength. I started the book thinking that I'd already done this work, so this would just be me learning more about the topic. Brown breaks down shame and connection in ways that make her points highly relatable and highly relevant. As a writer, I found Brown's research also provides insight into writing characters who are mired in shame and those who aren't. I Thought It Was Just Me (But It Isn't) is a book based on research but written for every human, but particularly women and girls, who have ever been shamed into silence or into roles they didn't want to live.

This was the most influential of all her books, for me. I loved it. I think Brown's book's are best read in the order of Daring Greatly, I Thought It Was Just Me, and Rising Strong. Then, if you need the daily motivation and basic summary, The Gifts of Imperfection.

I wasn't ready to commit to opening up to a therapist, yet I really needed help. This changed my whole life, 5 years ago now. I had so much buried shame and it was choking me. So so so incredibly thankful for her research and the outlet it gave me. I can breath again, and I continue to make progress. I also learned how to set boundaries and be extremely comfortable with them. I didn't realize how much it cost me to never have had them- around my person, my family, my schedule, my heart. I think about B.I.G nearly every day of my life (boundaries Integrity Generosity)

I have cultivated shame my whole life, hiding and lying about the parts of myself I thought would repulse other people. I never understood what I was doing until I read Brene Brown's book in 2012. Being kind to myself and more genuine is still a work in progress but I have come a long way.This book is an essential read for anyone on the journey towards self-acceptance. I would recommend reading it in tandem with Byron Katie's book "I need your love, is that true?". With Brene Brown's book, you learn about the mechanics of shame, what your triggers are and how you behave when you have shame around certain issues. With Byron Katie's book, you learn to question the assumptions that drive your behavior (e.g. 'I need people's love and approval', 'I need to know that I am not alone', 'I need to know that other people have experienced similar feelings', 'if people know x about me, they will never love me'.)People are afraid to talk about dark emotions like shame, but I promise you, not doing this work is a million times harder. Speaking from my personal experience, self-exploration, with the help of authors like Brene Brown, has made me into a more peaceful person towards myself and towards other people.

I adore and respect Dr. Brown's research. However, I can't help but believe that she somehow is on a roll of redundancy. It reminds me other writers who over publish...Malcolm Gladwell, Wayne Dwyer, Deepak Chopra. If you've read one of their books you've read the most of their work.

I am 61 years old and carried shame through my whole life. I recently was able to realize the physical traits that occur when I am in shame. It was very, very powerful. With that realization the wanting to fight over the issue turned easily into empathy. I am amazed. I can only hope to have the experience again. I think it could be life changing for me.

Everyone should read this book. Understanding shame and how it effects everyone at so many levels has been eye opening. Learning how to be resilient to shame and learning how to speak about shame has been very impactful. I have also come to understand how to be more empathetic towards others and what it really means empathize, really listening and feeling the many emotions shame brings.

It is sort of hard to believe that the glowing reviews aren't from friends of the author. I was very disappointed with this book. Darrin is so self-confident and self-adulating throughout, as if he has invented something new with his "Percentage Racquetball" technique. In truth, the namesake chapter occupies only a few pages in the middle of the book, and otherwise it seems to be a typical racquetball book, covering everything from basic grips and strokes, to shot selection. However, compared to other texts I have, he really does not do a great job of describing shot mechanics. He just seems to leave out some details that a beginner or aspiring intermediate might not understand. Furthermore, while stating in his introduction that this book is for any player, he uses terminology, such as court terms, without definition. There is no glossary, and no index. Perhaps most insulting of all, the print is large, with big spaces between lines. Many pages are virtually blank, and the diagrams are amateurish. It looks as if he intentionally padded the pages to increase the page count. I can't blame him for promoting himself; he may be the only one to do so. My favorite in-print books: Winning Racquetball (Turner/Clouse) for the beginner, and Championship Racquetball(Davis/Mannino) for intermediate/advanced.

I read this book when it first came out several years ago and once again recently with the revisions and I have to say it is great for getting you to think about the basics. We all develop bad habits and this book helps you break that chain. It worked for me. I highly recommend it to anyone of any skill level. Great book!

...pure and simple. Darrin does a great job explaining how percentage racquetball works, and (while we will all make mistakes that lead to losing) how the system itself never fails. This book starts at the mechanics of making a good game, and goes forward from there all the way up to fitness for the game itself. Completely worth the read, there isn't a better book out there for this game.

I had been playing racquetball for several years before came across this book. The book made me realize that most racquetball players (including myself) spend most of our time playing without a clear strategy and trying to hit impossible shots. No wonder it was so easy for me to get frustrated. Darrin's percentage system helped me simplify my grossly convoluted racquetball style. It taught me to hit simple, easy shots; and I now find myself playing calm and under control, and consequently winning a lot more rallies. This book is an excellent resource for the beginner player, and also has some excellent tips for the semi-veteran like me who needs to start thinking more and running less.

Darrin Schenck presents a unique method of demonstrating proper technique through the use of Exclusive Flip-Book Technology. Do you remember making flip-book animations in grade school? Percentage Racquetball contains short video clips in the lower-right corner of each page that are easy to review on the racquetball court. Forward or backward, slow-motion or in real time -- it's fun, simple and effective. A must read!

I've read the pre-published version of this book and it's hands down the most informative well written instruction to Racquetball that I've ever read. The author is very descriptive and through. I've been able to incorporate some the "play smart" not "hard" tips that Darrin offers. Before being introduced to this book I was over swinging everything and my form was off. It's a must have for the beginner/intermediate or the veteran player that has developed years of bad habits.

After putting the principles taught in this book to use, I can proudly say that my racquetball game has risen a number of levels. Mr. Schenck eloquently describes the necessary steps a competitive player needs to take to improve their game. Regardless of the type of player you are, this book will help you continually move toward achieving the skills and the mindset needed to be a top player.

What he does with Chaser is truly exciting, and I found myself trying similar techniques on my animals as I read. I couldn't resist. If you're the kind of person who would read this book, you're probably going to find yourself equally fascinated and dying to try out the methods he describes in such vivid detail.

I have always thought that dogs are smarter than most people give them credit for. This book illustrates that they can be trained to understand all kinds of things, and the author demonstrates how you can teach your dog to do all kinds of complex things. It teaches the reader how to teach the dog all these things. One of the more enjoyable books I have read recently.

Pilley tells us exactly how he raised Chaser and began teaching her language. I loved learning about her accomplishments, his communication methods, the loving care she received as part of the family (definitely not a "lab subject") and entertaining incidents of day-to-day life. He is an informal and engaging writer that nevertheless explains the science behind his methods clearly. Lots of great ideas to use with my own dog. I also was inspired by the scientific contributions the author was able to make at an age when many retire to the Lazyboy in front of the TV. Inspiring on all levels.

This is not only a grand testimony to animal intelligence and empathy, and the human-animal connection. It should be in the library of every psychologist and psychology student. A joyous explanation of behavior, learning and perception, anyone with a pet or a child will be enriched with insight and tools for success in these areas.

Would recommend this book to all dog lovers. Was very interested in the portion where Chaser reacted to the discord in her new home and how she took refuge in her crate. Dogs and children are very sensitive and as adults we need to be aware of this andact accordingly. The time taken with this dog and the lessons learned are amazing. It will be interesting to discover what otherbreeds can learn and what will encourage them. Chaser is a wonderful example of what love and patience can accomplish. I'd giveit ten stars if that was possible. LOVE that DOG.

I bought this book for my grandson who is only 10 months old. His parents speak French and visit France as much as they can. So they are wanting my grandson to be exposed to as much French as possible. His parents are very happy with this book. It is sturdy. So, it will hopefully outlast to his toddler stages. Only time will tell. In the meantime they are enjoying reading the book to him.

My husband said the translation didn't make much sense. I think we will read the English version to our son and have my husband translate the story to French.

The story is cute in English because it rhymes, it does not rhyme and therefore makes very little sense in French. Ok if looking to pair it with a book in English. Doesn't make sense for just a Francophone child.

We purchased "Good Night, Moon" in both Spanish and French (as well as English) because our son loves the story o much and it seemed a good opportunity to expose him to other languages. As a non-native French speaker I find this book a bit harder to read that the Spanish version (seems an easier language to me), but we are still aving fun muddling through. My only complaint about this book is it's size - it's fairly small.

I was asked to give a talk on birch bark canoes (I weave with birch bark)but didn't really know the first thing about them. This book was very helpful!! I did make a 3 ft birch bark canoe but also learned a lot about the people and their ways which really made my talk much more interesting. They were awe struck with my canoe. Would suggest this book to anyone interested in learn about canoes!!!!

The process is described, but not in a cookbook style. Same is true of choosing good bark: described, but I think one has to go out into the field with an expert builder to really understand it).Nevertheless, I plan to try by starting with a model...
