This was a great book. Please don't misunderstand--the subject matter and circumstances were dreadful--but it is a story that needed to be told. I applaud Victoria Spry for being so forthcoming with her tragic upbringing--rather, the tragic first portion of her life. She is brave beyond words. She is a true survivor. It angers and saddens me that so many people have to go through situations such as these, and it seems as though no one believes them, or treats them as though they are not a priority. People like Eunice do not deserve sympathy, nor do they deserve a second chance. The justice system (American or not, apparently, as they were in the U.K.) is a complete joke. They claim to help innocent people who need the help, but it is a sham. We need more people like Victoria in the world, and in social justice jobs. They understand what it is like, all too well. They have lived the hell Victoria did. I pray, one day, no one else will have to know this type of life either.
This was one of the hardest books I have read. I would have to stop reading for a few days after only reading a few chapters. Caution it is very detailed. I feel the best part of this read is understanding what the author went through after it all. Most books just stop after the rescue leaving the reader wondering what happened to this child after. It helps to understand that even though a child or children are rescued it doesn't mean that all is good. I see the author as very brave.
What a survivor. We all have a responsibility to see our children raised happy and healthy. Great read for anyone who has been abused as a child. You know the thoughts and feelings Victoria was going through. Also the book gives all the cues to look for if a child is being abused. This was a horrific case and so unfortunate that too many people looked the other way or did not want to get involved to fight this very evil women.
This book was heart breaking and torturously detailed, many times I looked at my 5 year old and cried wondering how someone could do such horrid things to a child. It was a page turner and I could not put it down, she is a brave and triumphant soul. I also loved how she included a "after the fact" most of these books stop after the trials and cases close and leave you wondering what had happened to them, she lets you see a little glimpse in her life.
A walk from beginning to beginning. One of the worst cases of child abuse so severe and lengthy it almost reads as fiction. She doesn't stop there for as Victoria says, her story didn't end at the conviction of her mother. It offers us the opportunity to walk with her through the ups and downs of recovery. Aiding the understanding of addiction, of pain, of love, of strength - it takes many people, support.... and tenacity. Through Victoria's shocking story, she has given me faith to not only support the struggling but to be my own Phoenix. Thank you Victoria and all the people that surround you.
This story was so sad with a Triumph ending. All i wanted to do is save Victoria. By the end she saved herself. This book is worth the time to read it. I highly recommend you reading this story. Will read other books by her very well written.
Shocking. Beyond comprehension. The things this so-called mother did to her children is so that she had to be mentally ill to even think of the things she did. Victoria spry is an amazing strong woman saw her way out of hell. I was born and raised as a Jehovah's Witness and lived with an extremely abusive mother and at that time, in the seventies, the whole congregation just looked the other way because they were afraid of my mom and how crazy she could get. this book touched me more than any other child abuse story I have ever read!
Pure evil - it sickens me knowing that agencies that are supposed to protect children often fail miserably, regardless of their location on the globe. There are way too many children placed in foster and adoptive homes that are Hell on Earth. How will that change when social workers are so overworked and vastly underpaid? So many opportunities were missed that could've ended Victoria and her siblings' torture sooner... Kudos to Victoria for persevering; she won the war.
