Of course John Adams is well known as a President, founding father, and father of a President but those are from the vantage point of his political life. This book shows the man behind that politician and offers more personal and intimate reasons for his political choices. The hidden gem in this biography is Abigail Adams. She was a woman ahead of here times by almost 200 years. An excellent example for any girls education in self empowerment and living life to it's fullest. She worked within the restrictions of here time and lived her life as if there were no restrictions except those we impose on ourselves. No war of the sexes here. She simply did what needed to be done, educated herself in a wide variety of life arenas and won the subplot and admiration of her husband, family, friends and all who knew her.A must read. And make sure you, your sons and your daughters read this also.I give my highest praise and recommendation to this book.

Easy to read. While advertised to be a book about Abigail and John, it's 70% Abigail and 30% John. There are some minor errors, such as stating that the graves of both are in the lobby of the church in Quincy, while they are actually in a lower crypt in that church. She states that the break between John and Thomas Jefferson may have been because of the personal problems that John and Abigail were going through at the time. I have trouble buying that idea as much as she emphasized it. Several times I found myself saying, didn't I just read this a few pages before? All that said, I enjoyed the amount of time Ms. Gelles spent in sharing the letters between the two. Indeed, the whole work is based 80% on those letters.

Seldom are a husband and wife so at one life, in goals, in giftedness. It is amazing that letters were preserved for the world to see their utter selflessness in contributing to our country's founding, and how they steered decisions with bothhands on the wheel, so to speak. John's respect for Abigail's knowledge and insight is a beautiful example of recognizing her as a true helpmeet, in an age when women were generally considered lesser humans. In light of today's political chaos, it is fascinating to see how Adam's presidential term parallels so much of the same terrible infighting and blatant ambition and lying! Yet Abigail remained his port in the storm. This read is truly worthwhile!

Very easy to read and having so much from both Of their journals and letters to put together gives a well rounded and unusually personal look at this amazing family. A true marriage of love and devotion not only to each other but to a country they both hoped to see survive and become what it was destined to become with God's help. They were both very well educated and encouraged their children and grandchildren to be the same, while also endeavoring to be servants to family and country. The sacrifices they made in serving to establish this country were certainly not the only ones made but some of the most heartfelt and wrenching for ones so entwined as they. It is always interesting to see the true feelings and desires of historical figures and how they were (and are) perceived by the world due to the media and others misrepresentations of them. Here was a man, not perfect in any way, but with a desire to serve this country with all he possessed and also to raise up an exceptional son who would later become president as well. Amazing lives of virtue and duty and ever allowing the love of God to flow through them to many generations of a large if imperfect family. They never lost faith and I am glad we have recorded history of such fine examples to follow. Highly recommend reading for young adults and up.

John Adams is well known for his role as Second President of the United States, Ambassador to France and England during the American Revolution, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. What is not as well known is the role of his wife Abigail in ensuring that he had the means to do so.An early Woman's Rights Activist (she advocated for the vote for women long before Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton ever thought of doing so) Abigail Adams was one of the first to argue that women should be allowed equal status to men in the new country her husband and his fellow Founders Washington and Jefferson had created.Abigail Adams was also the one responsible for keeping the family together through both the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, multiple moves, a smallpox epidemic, and Adams term as President of the United States. She was not just his wife and lover but his adviser and one of his most valued friends.Gelles emphasizes Abigail and John Adams as being something beyond the traditional colonial era husband and wife in that they were true partners in everything that they did. This book is excellent both for the amateur and professional historian in that Gelles relies on primary source documents such as, letters and journal entries yet manages to make this an entertaining read for those not looking to write a thesis paper or historical journal article. Overall I would recommend this to anyone interested in the early history of the United States

It was a very fascinating book about the devotion of Abigail and John Adams to each other as well his ambitions for this young colony. He certainly was a driving force in perfecting the country he and the other men who worked so hard to establish a nation in this continent free of England'sauthority over them. This book makes the reader feel as if he or she is in the middle of the strife whether with England or with each other. It is well written.
