I usually get two guide books for every trip I take, Lonely Planet and DK (recently I started to try out Fodor's. I don't think I like it because its layout or format is kind of confusing. Maybe I'm not used to it yet). Compared to DK, LP is much more detailed in my opinion, but DK offers more photos. I felt compelled to write a review because I found DK is getting harder and harder to read due to its extremely small font, especially the description next to a photo or illustration). Maybe I'm getting old and need reading glasses (in fact my husband said he couldn't read anything on DK, lol). After reading it for a while, my eyes just start to hurt and I don't feel like reading it anymore. I don't know why the publisher make the font so small. I would imagine older people would have a hard time reading it. BTW, I'm 41-year-young :)

I really like eyewitness travel guides. I got the same book when I went to Rome 15 years ago. I am using it again on this trip. One thing I did notice, that in 15 years my eyesight has declined. And it's very difficult to read the small print. Oh well, maybe one of my younger travel companions will be able to read it for us. Hey, Eyewitness! If you read this, please give us Kindle versions. Makes it much easier to travel with your guides. That way we don't have to lug around these heavy (1.5lb) books. Then I could also adjust the text size. (This is why this guide loses 1 star in my review)

Great Pictures. Information seemed dated.Large heavy book. Better information available in the Fodors book which is a pound less. The pictures are beautiful and this would make a good coffee table or bookcase book, but not a good book to travel with. I couldn't find operating hours quickly for attractions. It annoyed me that I could not find the info in a logical place.

The indexes are so inadequate that the book is only minimally useful. Why on earth is it too difficult to do them well? I am required to search and look for cross indices and find after standing on the street looking for references to what I am looking for and finally then find only the most minimal information on what I am looking at? I found the guides far more frustrating than useful. I would not buy these guides again when I travel.

This was so handy and easy to use. Love the way the book is organised by areas of the cities. Really liked the foldout map with the color-coded walking only streets. The book fit easily into my purse. The travel tips in the back, specific to Budapest were spot on and very helpful. Having the book added a lot of confidence for us navigating a big city on our own. Will most definitely be buying similar Top 10 books for other travel destinations.

I have been using this DK rome book for the last 15 years, so I know all the versions. This 2019 is a complete revamp. I suggest the 2018 version. The changes are: no more glossy pages (soft matte paper is used); no restaurant section in the back (they are interspersed on every page); elimination of almost 50 pages of history; a language section that is hilariously small print (I put on glasses to see it and still could not). In short, the changes to this book make it rather ordinary, and even hard to use. Even an image of the Pantheon mislabels where Raphael's tomb is. As someone who ordered this book annually, I can just say that the beauty, style, and colorfulness of this edition has been destroyed, and I urge all buyers to think twice before purchasing the 2019 version. I can't imagine going to Rome without some introductory history, and the editor of this new version must have been literally out to lunch when approving the new version.

Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel are my favorite series of travel guides. DK produces the most detailed and beautiful photographic guides. I have one for every country or city I’ve visited since first discovering them 18 years ago while living in the UK. I still buy the books for trip planning (and the gorgeous visuals), but now I also purchase and download the Kindle version of their 'Lists of 10 Top' guides for the specific location to lighten my luggage load.

COMPLETELY outdated. I looked up a few things online for further information and of the handful I checked, all but one were closed -- and had closed years ago.

Like the attack on Pearl Harbor, 9/11 indicated that we were at war we just didn't know it yet. That war began before September 11, 2001 but that was the first major strike of the war. The Third World War isn't about ideology but about unfinished business in countries where the Soviets and the United States had interests, slights against other countries and religion.Steve Coll's excellent, well documented book GHOST WARS examines the events leading up to 9/11, how our policy enabled these horrible events to occur, the inability by U.S. analyst to see (or to have people in power listen to them)and miscalculations/lack of involvement in Afghanistan after the Soviet's pulled out allowed the Taliban to take power and isolate those that might have been our allies. In the process, bin Laden rose to power creating his the insidious network of suicide bombers all in pursuit of his jihad.Colon does an exceptional job of documenting how all this occurred. The research that Coll and Griff Witt did as the background to this fascinating but also terrifying story provides exhaustive detail on how policy makers could bungle the latest threat that the United States and the rest of the world face today.Coll begins his book going as far back as 1976 during the Carter administration and the seige on the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan and traces the roots of discontent that would bear deadly fruitation in 2001. He connects the dots showing how all of these steps from that seige to the bumbling invasion of Afghanistan and the U.S. support (and abandonment) of anti-Soviet guerrilla commanders in that country when brewed together with foreigners such as bin Laden creating the toxic soup of terrorist activity seen before and since that fateful date in 2001.Coll's book won the Pultizer Prize and is highly recommended for an exhaustive and fascinating glimpse into the pieces of the puzzle that, when put together, gave us a picture of the murder of innocents, destruction and evil. If politics is war by a different means, than so is terrorism.

interesting read that reinforces my strong conviction (after a 20 year career in the Army)-that NOTHING is ever as simple as portrayed in movies and on TV, which is how the average American views our world. I am disillusioned in our governments constant turmoil whenever the White House changes ownership. This book is a beautiful accounting of bureaucratic morass.

Well written with tons of extreme detail. Coll knows his stuff and puts things into perspective very eloquently. Certainly an interesting read. I had to finish it, but slows to a crawl at points so was tough to continue at times. Did not have me looking forward to next page and chapter like other non fiction books I have read. It read like a history book. Other writers can make history feel more exciting. This is a matter of fact account with no style to speak of in my opinion.

Found this well constructed and deeply sourced. There were no apparent gaps in the connected dots and most connections made solid sense. The path to 9/11 was through these pages in great detail.

Well researched book into the unseen world and activities of American spies and military in Afghanistan and Pakistan. For those who have desire to understand the key role secret missions play in America's foreign policy this is the book for you. The writer goes beyond media sound bites and facetious political theatre in Washington to excavate the real reasons why America is on Afghanistan and may I add how Bin Laden became such a force. For those who have never understood why the USA continues to dance with the terrorist supporting Pakistani regimes, this a good primer. The author traces the relationship between the USA and dubious characters and dictators from the 1960s through 911 to the present time. Defintely recommend.

Very detailed analysis on CIA activity in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion and Washington's often confusing policy on Central Asia. Coll precisely pointed out that some of our "allies", like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, are definitely less reliable and trustworthy than some claimed. This book serves a warning to statesmen on foreign policy.

I gave this book a solid 4 stars because the subject is so interesting and it keeps you clued to the pages all the way to the last few pages. Instead of ending in a giant crescendo of planes flying into the twin towers, it just winds down into anti climatic ending that leaves you feeling very unfulfilled and wishing for more. I hate to make the comparison to a romantic interlude that ends with a huge disappointment but I can't think of a better one. All thru the book you are seeing the connections come together and know where they will eventually end and the closer you get the more exciting it becomes and then finally when you're ready for the ultimate climax, the author simply walks away, leaving the reader wondering what the heck just happened. But this is just a minor complaint, the book itself is wonderfully written and researched and would have been an easy 5 star book had it not ended too soon. All in all, I'm glad I bought this book and recommend it to others.

Love this book. Its the only thing I will allow to sit on my coffee table all day long

the book has wonderful photos of the Oregon coast - a pleasure to look at

We had made a trip to Oregon and I wanted some additional pictures and this is just beautiful....very pretty! It sits nicely on a coffee table for occasional viewing.

I received this book after attending Rick Schafer's workshop a few years back and have learned so much from it. The illustrations are so beautiful and really show how wonderful the Oregon Coast is. I have returned many times to photograph it myself since the book is inspiring. Rick has a trained eye that matches no other. If you want to see Oregon's beauty or just want a coffee table book that takes you away this is the one to buy!

Excerpt from The Arts and Crafts Garden Sculpture showed off the taste, wealth and education of the owner. It was not often lavishly used in Arts and Crafts gardens, and was usually restricted to one or two key pieces placed at focal points around the house; larger collections could be spread throughout the garden. The extent of the use of sculpture was usually dependent upon the wealth of the owner. Traditional figures and decorative subjects were mostly favored. Urns were common; also fountains and particularly masks. Lead was popular as a traditional material that withstood the British climate well, making it suitable for ornamented water features and troughs, and it showcased British craftsmanship. Stone and composite stone pieces, offered by firms such as James Pulham & Son, were also popular.Pots and tubs were carefully placed in singles and groups around the house and on terraces. Terracotta and stone were common materials; sizes and patterns varied.

A charming little introduction to the Arts & Crafts garden.

THis little book is packed with history, information and great garden inspiration. I am so glad that I purchased it.

Researching Gertrude Jekyll and I found this book really helpful with regards to her and the arts and crafts period.

A wonderful book. Except for the occasion, unknowing, encounters with Kent's illustrations--for Moby Dick, for Shakespeare, for Random House--I was completely unaware of Rockwell Kent or his work until the Portland (ME) Art Museum had a summer retrospective of his work--including paintings from the Pushkin Museum--a couple years ago. The immediately seized my imagination. They work much like the symphonies of Sibelius work, vast expanses of barren landscape, as intimidating as they are compelling. It was with such a background that I purchased Wilderness. What an intriguing story: a father goes to Alaska to paint (and create a set of illustrations for Nietsche's Zarathustra) and, with his wife's permission, takes their 9 year old son (also named Rockwell) along for the company and the sheer adventure of it. How amazing is that? How envious of the young Rockwell I am. What hay would I have made of such an opportunity to escape the world with my father for seven months on the verge of puberty and participate in an adventure I'd wonder at the rest of my life. No wonder the book was a best seller upon its publication (1920). No wonder the book was compared, hyperbolically I'll admit, to Whitman's Leaves of Grass in terms of its potential influence on American literature. The 1996 edition by Wesleyan University Press includes many additional illustrations, including some of young Rockwell's drawings and letters. Altogether, a very satisfying experience. It does exactly what it set out to do.

Wonderful insight into the rugged life of those willing to live in the Alaska wilderness . Vacation to Kenai this year includes Fox Island so can't wait to see after reading of this adventure.

I would recommend to anyone that loves to dream of living "out there". Of course the art in the book is wonderful.

Very nice book with delightful and inspirational illustrations and text.

I heard about Rockwell Kent while on an Alaskan cruise. This book is worth it for the art. I don't care for the style but the Alaska art done during a few months on an island off Seward were interesting to see. The text was less interesting to me but said something about Alaska in 1918-19. I am glad I purchased it.

Interesting book, I enjoy anything about Alaska - we lived there in the past and loved it. This book was recommended by a friend in Washington State.

I thought it was excellent. He discussed the results of many scientific studies about the dangers of pesticides in clear non technical terms. In short, he translated technical data into understandable language for the average reader. This book is the most complete, recently published book I know of which describes in depth the present and probable future health risks humans face as a result of GMO's and pesticides in or on our food. His charts correlating the increase use of GMO's and spraying since the mid 1990's with the increase in serious health problems like diabetes, cancer, autism, etc is illuminating and disturbing.

Acres magazine interviewed the author, Andre' Leu. The book, The Myths of Safe Pesticides, is more than worth the time & money spent in reading it. As a consumer of organically grown or wild food, plus using all certified organic cotton & wool & hemp for clothing, shoes, & bedding, I thought I would learn a little, but the book was more than worthwhile. Please buy it, read it, & recommend, loan, or give it away as a gift. Extinction is possible for our species if we do too little to prevent it.

Incredibly good book. Great read. When you look up the studies and read the abstracts on the 'net - and link them, the GMO and poison crowd don't swallow it, but it is very educational, and i believe provides refutations to all the GMO and poison "rationales" except the unspoken one: "WE WANT BUCKS".

Quite technical but well researched and great info. Not too hard to read.

This book should be read by every American. The way pesticides and other poisons are tested is dangerous to our health. Organic farmers prove all the time that these poisons are not needed to be able to farm. I urge everyone to get it and read it. And to buy organic food.

This is an important book to consider alongside new thinking about restoration of soils.

Biodiversity is our best friend in dealing with pest problems.The rest of The Myth of Safe Pesticides is a hailstorm of facts. There is no padding, no narrative, no tangents, no stories of suffering or redemption, no sugarcoating. Rather than a personal rant, Leu lets the scientific studies speak for themselves. And there are hundreds to choose from.Each chapter dispels a myth about the safety of pesticides, and by extension, the government regulators and corporate community evaluating them:1. All agricultural poisons are rigorously tested. Actually, of the more than 88,000 chemical compounds unleashed on the world since the end of World War II, only a few hundred have been (incorrectly) tested, only three have ever been banned, and none have been tested in combination with any of the others, inside the human body.2. Very small amount. The old adage is the dose makes the poison. Actually, the body doesn't care about massive amounts. It's the tiniest parts per billion and even trillion that latch on to proteins, hormones and cells, block communications from the brain, disrupt the stability of the network, and create massive imbalances in cell growth (cancers) and the various "new" chronic diseases of the past 25 years. It's the tiny amounts that kill.3. Breakdown - modern pesticides rapidly degrade. Actually, residues concentrate the poisons. When toxic poisons break down (biodegrade) they can become oxons, 100 times more toxic than the original pesticide. Glyphosate (Roundup) at residue levels induces human breast cancer cells to multiply 8-13 times. It grows cancer.4. Reliable Regulatory Authorities. Actually, they can be counted on for absolutely no protection whatsoever. See my review of Poison Spring by a 25 year veteran of the EPA.5. Pesticides are essential to farming. Actually, yields are higher and the earth richer and far more stable without them. Such crops also withstand extremes, now a common occurrence, far better than pesticide and chemical fertilizer farming. And they reduce the cost of farming substantially.Much like the tobacco scandal, the bodies are piling up. The charts of chronic diseases all turn parabolic in the early 90s, as Roundup spread around the world. They continue their straight up increase year over year. Unprovable coincidence? Not according to the studies. The 2010 US President's Cancer Panel Report clearly lays out that environmental toxins are the main cause of cancers. Yet government not only won't ban them, it won't test them, and actually defends the manufacturers against countries that do.So,-77% of fresh fruit and vegetables in the USA have residues of pesticide.-47% of food in the USA has measurable amounts of multiple pesticide residues.-Systemic poisons are absorbed into all parts of the plant, so washing them removes very little of the poisons.-Botulism and other food scares are increasing in animals and our food supply because pesticides damage bacteria and enzymes in the gut microbiome that regulate homesostasis - balanced health - of the animals we raise.-Some rain in Europe contains so much pesticide it could not be distributed for drinking.Leu concludes there is no credible science to guarantee that any level of exposure is safe.And if poisoning their customers and the planet were not enough, debt purchasing of GMO seeds and pesticides has driven 284,000 farmers in India to commit suicide since 1985. This compares to zero suicides by non GMO farmers using native seeds in the same period. Another unprovable coincidence? How many do we need?David Wineberg
