Lewis & Clark, by Nick Bertozzi

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up—Meriwether Lewis, a complex and fascinating figure in American history, was a bold explorer and a man haunted by demons. Both sides of his personality are revealed in this saga of his search for a Northwest water passageway to the Pacific. This retelling begins as Jefferson informs Lewis that Congress has approved this expedition. After recruiting William Clark and obtaining necessary provisions, the expedition departs St. Louis in 1804. Death, stampeding buffalo herds, steep-sided canyons, large bodies of moving water, and encounters with multiple Native American tribes must be negotiated. The author makes excellent use of the generous page size. The vertical orientation of side panels frames a deep chasm and scale the heights of a tall tree. Prairies are depicted with long horizontal panels spanning the gutter, and full-page spreads show the expansive country, contributing to readers' understanding of the vastness of the journey. Traditional panels and speech balloons are used to portray the points of view of the explorers. Shapes and outlines of panels alter significantly when the various Native communities are depicted, with a different design for each tribe. Inventive use of differently shaped speech balloon help readers identify each individual tribe that the explorers encounter. This story continues beyond the conclusion of the expedition; it ends three years hence, detailing Lewis's tragic end as well as suppositions regarding Sacajawea's whereabouts.—Barbara M. From Booklist

This important and often retold episode from U.S. history—the scientific exploration, federally supported by President Jefferson, to find a water route from the Missouri to the Pacific—receives an accessible, humorous, and accurate rendering by cartoonist Bertozzi (Houdini: The Handcuff King, 2007). Relying on good research and his own clarified sense of what these historical figures might have felt, Bertozzi shows us Lewis’ depressive psyche, Jefferson’s devotion to scientific inquiry, Clark’s mediation skills, the slave York’s self-perception, Sacajawea’s role and personal considerations, and the attitudes, fears, and certainties of the general populaces of the exploration party, Native American villages, and white townspeople. The small, black-and-white panels provide clear and action-packed detail as well as insightful poses and facial expressions. The different languages being spoken and even hand signs are creatively distinguished by different balloon outlines. An excellent supporting choice for the American history curriculum and a fun and edifying read in itself. Grades 7-12. --Francisca Goldsmith

As excited as I was about getting my hands on Nick Bertozzi's LEWIS & CLARK, I have to say that it turned out to be a sad disappointment to read. Full of inacccurate historical details and incorrect details in Bertozzi's illustrations; the book fell far short of my expectations. Bertozzi's uniforms are pretty sad. His Indians are cookie-cutter stereotypes, both in appearance and in their speech. Lewis comes off as a raging lunatic (hardly the sort of man that Thomas Jefferson would have had as a Private Secretary...or sent to lead an expedition!). Having participated in the recent L&C Bicentennial observance, I just found myself wondering where Bertozzi got his information and his ideas? It seems to me that Nick Bertozzi took a fantastic tale of true adventure and tried to 'improve' on what is already a great story. Sometimes you just cannot make a great story better by exercising 'artistic license'. Looking at the bibliography on the last page of the book, I found myself wondering if the author READ any of the volumes he cites???Nice 'comic book'. Disappointing historical graphic novel.

Beautiful illustrations, fantastic story.

Gave this as a gift... Haven't read it myself, but enjoyed glancingt hrough it and seeing their journeying portrayed in such a lively way.

It's fairly shameful that I went to a college named after these guys, and I know very little about their expedition. So when I came across this in a search for stuff for my 3rd-grader to read, I figured the least I could do was spend the hour to read it myself. It's kind of an impressionistic take on what really comes across as an astonishing trailblazing venture. The artwork and approach is quite good at conveying the sense of some of the hardships involved. There's a lot going on, with minor threads involving Clark's slave, Sacajawea, Lewis' depression, and more. It's kind of a lot to take in, along with tonal shifts (including fart gags) that are occasionally jarring. Probably the most interesting aspect, which is kind of confusingly rendered here, is all the interactions with various tribes they encountered along the way. It kind of sparked my appetite to learn a little more, and maybe pick up one of the standard histories, such as Stephen Ambrose's Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West. And although I lament the absence of a more detailed map of the route, the book's overall design and repeated commitment to inventive double-page spread layouts made it a little more interesting than the standard graphic book.

When I read this I thought, "Well, that's the good, the bad and the ugly of the Lewis and Clark story." Fun to read, but definitely comic book fiction, this will probably appeal most to middle school boys, after all it's a story about a bunch of men basically living together for a long period. I was disappointed that Sacagewea's prowess was not applauded. Most of the story is about Meriwether Lewis, who deteriorates into a not-so- likeable guy. Mild-mannered Bill Clark seems to get lost in the shuffle. Dare I say that although Native American tribes are named and differentiated, they blend into the same stereotype. However, dates, territorial maps, and historical informative bits are helpful to those who have forgotten or were never taught about this expedition: Jefferson is president, the USA ends at the Mississippi River, the date of the expedition is 1803/4 to 1806.

Reason for Reading: I enjoy Western history.I've read a few books on Lewis & Clark before (children's books) and read many books on the expansion of the west where the Lewis & Clark story would take up a chapter so I am familiar with this story. This book is recommended for ages 12 and up but it isn't written down to a young audience, adults will enjoy it as much or more. The book of course tells the story of their epic journey from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean, in search of a viable water route. That journey was fraught with accidents, bad luck, aggressive Indians, injuries and setbacks from nature itself. Bertozzi manages to tell a fine introductory tale of this expedition and these adventurers who were full of their success before they had even started.Bertozzi also brings to life the personalities of Lewis and Clark in a way that I haven't encountered in my previous reading. Captain William Clark is shown as the level headed partner and thus is not the one that stands out. He is always reasoning with Lewis about there plans, calming him down, and putting out the flames of discord with others. He is shown as a quiet, intelligent, reasonable, respectful man who probably kept the expedition from becoming a mess, in more ways than one. Though he was willing to have as much fun as the next guy and went along easily enough with Lewis' more thrill-seeking adventures. On the other hand, Captain Meriwether Lewis was a man with a volatile temper, quick to anger, and if not for Clark's levelheadedness may have caused some serious trouble on their adventure. Lewis was obsessed with the expedition and finding a water route to the Ocean. When coming first upon a huge waterfall and eventually hitting the Rocky Mountains he took these hits deeply and went into deep depressions, took to drink, and could not be reasoned with. When they finally made it to the Pacific Lewis was not happy as they had not made it entirely be a water route and their stay at the end dragged on because he entered a deep depression. Bertozzi also plays up a story involving Lewis, his reactions and feeling which along with many other factors may have lead to his final act of ending his life.Done in black and white, which I always think suits historical non-fiction well, the art is kept simple without a lot of background within the frame by frame discussions of characters. Lovely backgrounds are used but when necessary and are never added clutter. The one problem I did have though, was that at times we are supposed to read horizontally across both pages and this was not always made evident. Sometimes it was obviously clear, other times the reading went down one page and started up again at the top of the other and then there were those times you were reading along and realized you should have read horizontally across both pages once you got to the top of the second page. A minor annoyance that happened to me more times than it should have. A good, interesting story, which Bertozzi has written with a fine sense of humour but not exactly a page-turner.

British historian Andrew Field, who earlier explored the French perspective to the Battle of Waterloo, now turns his methodical approach to the preliminary Battle of Quatre Bras. His carefully reasoned analysis suggests how and why Napoleon failed to achieve his objectives on 16 June 1815, and how that affected the outcome of 18 June 1815. If this is familiar ground to many readers, Field's perspective is a worthwhile change of pace, with some interesting insights. In a brisk 200 pages, Fields examines Napoleon's opening moves in the Waterloo campaign and his initial success in wrong-footing his opponents. Blucher elected to fight at Ligny with only three of his four corps. Wellington only just held his ground at Quatre Bras, thanks to just-in-time reinforcements and to a series of painful mistakes on the French side. The nature of those mistakes come back largely to Marshal Ney, a courageous fighter but a man recalled to commanded only hours before the fight and working at cross purposes with his commander. The narrative captures the excitement of a close-fought battle. The text is enhanced by a nice selection of pictures and battle diagrams. The content is accessible to the general reader while having much to appeal to the student of the campaign. Recommended.

The author repeats at nausea, again and again each subject to make sure we, poor mortals, finally understands. He used the word "whilst" up to 3 times in one page and even in one sentence.!!! Ney failure to concentrate or understand is stated also every other page... I did not learn anything from this frustrating account "from the French side" except that the allied army was destroyed, cut down, massacred, slaughtered so many times that I wonder how the French lost with so many victories.

This book is an engaging s study of decisions and results of action and, critically, lost opportunities, making the desperate battle of Waterloo unavoidable. The perspective of the participants cannot be known for certain, as the author makes clear. Field shows an army rife with desperation, looking over their shoulder, and lacking crucial elements and leaders, such as Murat and Davout, and relying on such as Ney who instead performed as he had in previous battles (such as Eylau, Bautzen and most of the time in the Peninsular War). I am next reading the book Waterloo: The French Perspective.

Informative, and really gives a sense of the hours leading up to Waterloo. Depicts the mistakes and courage of both the French and Allied Armies. Wellington was lucky. Napoleon was too concerned with destroying the Prussians. Ney, the "bravest of the brave", was a battle commander and not an overall strategic commander and this possibly lead to the French defeat. The author does a great job depicting this and Napoleon's mistake of not going to Ney's aid

I immensely enjoyed Andrew Field’s Waterloo: The French Perspective, and the author doesn’t disappoint here. In many ways, the Battle of Quatre Bras set the stage for the Battle of Waterloo itself, and the author presents a comprehensive view of the former engagement. The broader strategic implications for the entire campaign are covered of course, and the author gives a terrific background on Napoleon’s Hundred Days and his grand strategy for the campaign.A careful analysis of the Allied and French movements / concentration is given, and the author paints a very colorful (and convincing) picture of the timidity of the French commanders, the communications breakdown, and the growing cracks in the French Army’s morale. Some space is devoted to various military tactics of the French Army and how the infantry-cavalry-artillery collaboration was carried out. Saliently, the author devotes a lot of space to the infamous marches and countermarches of D’Erlon corps during the day, and the (hesitant) participation of two divisions from that corps at Ligny (a much-ignored fact!) is analyzed. The book also illustrates just how close Wellington came to being captured, wounded, or killed. Moreover, we learn quite a bit about the key events before the battle – the nature of Wellington’s promises to the Prussians and the alleged meeting between Napoleon and Ney. In short, buy this book!

Field is an excellent historian. He brings a serving officer's viewpoint and does a great job of filling out a lot of details that, even after years of studying Napoleonic military history, were relatively obscure to me. At the same time, this is a very readable book which will be very interesting and enjoyable to the general reader.

Very engaging and well written. The chaos of a fluid battle, with no one really knowing what was going on and who was gonna show up or when, orders lost and orders countermanded, is brought to life in this gem of a book.

Excellent review of the battle before "the battle". Quatre Bras set the tone for Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo and Andrew Field does a tremendous job of laying out the participants and analyzing the decisions that impacted each side.

I like the DK Top 10 series of books. They lack depth but if you've only got a limited amount of time in an area it'll show you lots of pretty pictures and colorful maps to help you navigate. Naturally, something this small with lots of photos is going to be short on details.I've been planning my trip to Venice using this book as the primary source and Lonely Planet Venice and The Veneto (City Travel Guide) as my backup/more indepth source. DK books have been in my pocket for years so it's a brand that I trust. What I generally like about DK books and this book in particular is not only the top sights, but the top things to see while I'm there. San Marco Square, for instance, is an epic square but what are the important things to see and know? The only thing that I'm irked is that there's a great description of what to see on the Grand Canal, but there's no map to go along with it. Sort of defeats the purpose of the Top 10 things to see if you can't find out where they are.I also purchased (and returned) the Kindle version - I thought it would be as nice as the paperback copy, but it's a mess. Save yourself the hassle and buy the paperback.Overall, this is a great book, but it all depends on what your style of travel is and your scope of the trip. But I'm happy that I bought this book, which is more than I can say aboust most travel books I buy.

I love these books! I buy them whenever I go to a big city. They are so helpful and the perfect size to carry in your carry on or even a purse when you are out and about.

We found this book very helpful in planning one free day in Athens. It helped us determine what would be most interesting for us to do and see in the short time we had.

I always use the TOP 10 book to whichever city I go. I love how they lay out the top 10 things for all aspects with very concise and useful information. It's quick and easy to plan trips this way. If you compare to the other books in the store, the Top 10 lists for all aspects (including top 10 spots to visit, or top 10 lists for music lovers, entertainments, hip places, shopping, historical sites...etc) are actually pretty good selections! PLUS, if you need more information, you can always check out online to learn more about certain things that you're interested in.The benefits of using their books are A) the concise and useful info, and B)it's very light weight and thin, so you can carry it while travelling c)their map are up-to-date and very easy to use, too!The only down side is that not enough information about the history of certain spots or stories behind it, but I guess it's a functional tool instead of a history book. =)

We are doing a 12 day Mediterrean cruise and this is perfect to tuck in a pocket. We are spending an extra two days in Venice and wanted to be sure we hit the top sites. I have bought a lot of DK Eyewitness guides before and they are great. Not too much information and not too big to have to carry around with you. The pictures are beautiful and the maps are more than enough for the 2 days we have to see Venice.

Good size for traveling but all the info is online for free. That being said we used it a lot while traveling in Italy. Worth the cost.

A lot of pages jumping

I love this books, are very informative and have a map very complete, and you can get in a pocket

Shake Hands with the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda, by Roméo Dallaire

From Publishers Weekly

As former head of the late 1993 U.N. peacekeeping mission in Rwanda, Canadian general Dallaire's initial proposal called for 5,000 soldiers to permit orderly elections and the return of the refugees. Nothing like this number was supplied, and the result was an outright attempt at genocide against the Tutsis that nearly succeeded, with 800,000 dead over three months. The failure of the U.N.'s wealthier members to act as the tragedy unfolded obliged the author to leave military service to recover from PTSD (as well as the near breakdown of his family). While much of the account is a thickly described I-went-here, I went-there, I-met-X, I-said-this, one learns much more about the author's emotional states when making decisions than in a conventional military history, making this an important document of service—one that has been awarded Canada's Governor General's Award. And his descriptions of Rwanda's unraveling are disturbing, to say the least ("I then noticed large piles of blue-black bodies heaped on the creek banks"). Dallaire's argument that Rwanda-like situations are fires that can be put out with a small force if caught early enough will certainly draw debate, but the book documents in horrifying detail what happens when no serious effort is made. From Booklist

*Starred Review* On June 27, 1993, Dallaire--a career man in the Canadian military--was informed that he might be asked to lead a UN peacekeeping mission in Rwanda, to which he replied excitedly, "Rwanda, that's somewhere in Africa, isn't it?" Fourteen months later, he would return from his service there a nearly broken man, having failed to prevent the unfathomable massacre of 800,000 Tutsis and Hutus, which took place over a mere 100 days. From meticulous diary entries he wrote during his service there, Dallaire pieces together the inside story of what went wrong. He puts unsparing blame on the circular failure of the UN: lack of support from member countries, especially the U.S and the Security Council, which led to lack of respect for the UN, which then led to lack of support from member countries. He blames the warring sides, especially extremist Hutus, for planning the genocide during peace talks, knowing the UN would not have the courage to enforce the peace: "They knew us better than we knew ourselves." And he blames himself for his political naivete and his inability to convince the UN of the gravity of the situation, which has now spread to neighboring Congo. For those who would understand the inexorable but entirely preventable unfolding of the Rwandan holocaust, this account, told from the eye of the storm, is indispensable. As the title says it's a book about a failure of humanity, a grim account of the 1994 civil war and genocide in Rwanda written by the head of UNAMIR (UN assistance mission for Rwanda) peacekeepers general Romeo Dellaire. While reading a detailed story of the events in Rwanda can be an eye-opener by itself, Dellaire's book provides a unique viewpoint. Being a highest-ranking UN military official stationed in Rwanda since 1993 he gives a first-hand account of the political events, which involved Rwandan leaders, UN officials and several major countries, showing the utter failure to prevent the war before it errupted or to mitigate the subsequent horrible events.Dellaire's idealism (it was his first mission abroad) adds a constant sense of conscience to the story, making it a personal story and not just a chronicle of events. It's a story of a war and a genocide, of propaganda and hatred, of peacekeeping and postcolonialism, of heroism and resolve, of helplesness, trauma and indeciseveness, of tens of thousands women and children massacred. It's an engaging read, but far from a pleasant one, even if you exclude graphic details of the genocide. This is however the main point of the book, to face unpleasant truths and horrors of what happened in Rwanda 20 years ago and is still hapenning around the world this way or another.

This book starts out reading like a history book. It delves into Dallaire's roots and paints the picture of a man who grew out of a poor family into a marriage to the military. The book unravels into day-to-day accounts of everything that happened in Rawanda. I suspect many people will find this type of storytelling, boring and repedative. It can definately be these things at times but this book was not written to sensationalize what happened, it's written to tell you what happened.Dallaire describes the brutality he sees with an eerie calmness, you can definately understand how one could become desensitized to the carnage given the frequency of it.It's not the easiest of reads, there are many names and factions at play throughout the book and it's easy to forget who is who. The book is we'll worth the read.If you're struggling to finish, READ THROUGH THE END. The conclusion is a searing summary of why the genocide occurred and does not mince words when placing blame. They are some of the best pages I have read in any book. They lay out exactly why we are doomed as a species, to repeat the same atrocities over and over again.

My interest in the Rwandan Genocide was heightened when in 2012 I was sent to Rwanda in a partnership for Africa program with the US Air Force and stayed the Collins (Hotel from the Movie Hotel Rwanda). When I was there I went to the Genocide Museum and Memorial and was both fascinated and appalled that this happened. Since I didn't have much knowledge of the incident, I was in 12th grade when it happened, I decided to read this book as it was highly rated. I'm very glad I did. This was/is an amazing book that goes into substantial detail of how and why this horrific incident happened. As is the case with most nonfiction books there is a bit of history on the author and where they came from, etc. This is kept fairly short in this book and is also relevant to the story and interesting. When Dillaire starts the story of what happened in Rwanda you can tell its not going to end well and he does not hide the bitterness and pain that his 1 yr experience in living hell left him with. Be forewarned this book is very graphic and pulls no punches. The detail in which the actual genocide is detailed and how some of the acts were perpetrated is not for the faint of heart, no pictures are needed and thankfully not included. To be honest there were a few times that some of the details in this book kept me up at night and brought a sense how we "civilized" Nations could have just sat back and 800,000 people be slaughter in 100 days. The detail in this book is not written simply to shock the reader, but rather to inform you (the reader) of the brutality and complete hatred that was so prevalent during this event. This book also does a phenomenal job of also describing the excruciating effects on the UN Peacekeepers and Dillaire that witnessing so much death and destruction had on them. I walked away from reading this book mad that the UN and the "leader" nations of the world didn't give a damn about Rwanda and as is continually demonstrated the African continent. If you decide to buy this book, and I highly recommend that you do, you will understand why I made that last statement. I enjoyed this book immensely and also came away better understanding the sense of abandonment that so many developing countries feel from Western culture and nations, and the continual issues that past colonialism in Africa is still causing today.

#685,859 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Heads up to college instructors who are considering using this book to teach classes related to fraud investigation and payments. To be truly useable to students, this book needs considerable improvements as follows:1. First use of acronyms (of which there are plenty!) should ALWAYS be preceded by the full name. For example, before simply writing ODFI, the authors should spell out Originating Depository Financial Institution.2. A glossary of acronyms and agencies would also be extremely useful for references.3. The book lacks case studies and concrete examples.4. Almost no discussion of fraud is allocated to the six payment systems. Where it is mentioned, no real life scenarios are described. (Although fraud risks may have been outside the authors' intended scope, the book was used as the primary text in an undergraduate class I took on payment systems fraud.)5. The writing style is does not engage the reader. It reads more like an instruction manual for assembling a microwave oven.6. Some of the diagrams were as incomprehensible as the text itself. In short, the book seems as if it is written for people already working as payments professionals--and perhaps it was. As a newcomer to the fraud investigation world, however, I was not familiar with the terms or processes detailed in the book and therefore gleaned little useable knowledge.

I picked up this book looking for a book to possibly direct new staff to get them familiar with the payments industry as I brought them on and give them a jump start.I was disappointed as this is that it is really at the 25,000 to the 50,000 foot level and doesn't really dive into details in most areas and in many sections read like a history of this industry and not a how, what, and why description. Especially as it states in the introduction "This book provides a comprehensive view of the entire payments industry, including all its systems and functions." which it clearly fails to meet. So using the college textbook terms I might only categorize it as "supplemental reading material" only. The book is also very "business" oriented and doesn't really explain hardly any of the technology, standards (the payments industry is based on standards and not even mentioning them?), flows, of HOW in some cases the different functions work and flow together; as the book is titled "Payment SYSTEMS" and not "Payments Industry" or something similar I expected even a bit more deep dive vs. a bullet list of terms with quick definitions. In some cases I would almost go as far as stating some are wrong and not just information missing.I think it does have some really good illustrations though that explain some things easily and some of the walk throughs of the fews "hows" in the book were good.. but the level of detail was very inconsistent. Some other tables and descriptions I am wondering why they are there other than to consume space. I will also note that all of the graphics and tables in the Kindle version of this book are awfully blurry to the point the text is almost unreadable.I've been in the financial industry 15+ years (a majority in the card and ATM area) and have been doing PCI since its draft version and "The Data Security and PCI" segment in chapter 5 I would go as far as saying is one of the worst summations of PCI and Card Industry Data Security I have also ever read and really downplays the importance of it.It should also be pointed out that this book is made by Glenbrook who are the publishers of the PaymentsNews and PaymentsViews websites (as described in 'Chapter 11'). It at times almost seems to almost be written from the outside media organization looking into the industry vs. someone in the industry themselves doing this stuff every day and being it is the publishers of Payment News (which I read) I also expected more from them.If or when it comes time to do the third edition, the authors should reach out to me if they want to add some real meat to some of the areas of the content of this book as I really think the foundation is there to be much more.

Good if you are new to payments. I hadn't worked in payments before and it was a good introduction. Also useful if you need to quickly fall asleep.

Straightforward and to the point. Quick read and competently done.

Good introduction book on how various forms of payments work in the USA.

Good introduction, but not much technical depth on how payment systems work or interface with your institutions' internal systems.

Its a book what else can I say. Lol.

Good book for people looking for an informative overview of the payments landscape that is a relatively quick read. Great insights into things that affect your everyday life but you never noticed / thought of before.
