I have finished this absolutely fantastic book, I highly recommend it, I like Douglas Wilson, he always speaks brilliant things in a practical way.I love that he summarily rejected and rebuked the idea of being a, "nice", Christian but made it quite clear of the sheer laziness of that approach, especially since much of it is an attempt at social approval or fear of being what he, "cool shaming" but we Christians must remember that anything or anyone that is not with Christ, is against Him.He challenged Christian to develop a robust sense of humor, to not be offendable.The Rules for Reformers are as follows:1) Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever.2) Always remember the distinction between principles and methods.3) Reformers are conservatives, which means they must be prefer the concrete to the abstract.4) Reformers must cultivate a high sense of humor.5) Reformers must be combative.6) Reformers must play the long game.7) Reformers must be remember always that religion shapes culture, and culture trumps politics.I would encourage everyone to look up Douglas Wilson, he offers a different perspective on many of the issues of our day than the dichotomy that mainstream culture would like us to believe that there is.The fact is, the Christian needs to remember that we transform or reform the world by renewing our minds, we do this, by bringing every thought captive and to the obedience of Christ, because Christ is our hope and we must be able to give the reasons why He is our hope, thus be apologetist for Christ, the cross, Him crucified and risen again and that the only way to salvation is through Him and belief in His blood to justify us before God, and God's grace giving us faith to believe in Him, through His Word that is our sword to contend for our faith, the Spirit for our sanctification and for, by, and of the glory of God and it is not work of men but solely the work if God.In a world of radicals, we Christians must be Reformers and transformers of this world, not conforming to the world, but conforming to the image of God and Christ Jesus.

This review is for my brothers. You know who you are. You know we have a fight on our hands, a fight you and I will be engaged in unto the approach of the twenty-second century of our Lord.Now, a fight we know we have, yet, if we're honest, we also have an abundance of directionless generals.That's why I recommend this book. Wilson is not directionless. He's not dull of eye and weak of spine. His nose is not brown from too many bendings over to rump-kiss the powers that be.I believe this book is the most useful contemporary book for those men who want to fight and fight well, for those men who want to spend their lives as reformers.

I rarely finish books these days. I spend most of my time in the Scriptures because the reading of many books there is no end, and it wearies the body. But books by Douglas Wilson are different. He points me to paths I’ve missed. I feel stronger in the Lord and in the Word because of this book. It was not a waste of time. You should read this book.The first 1/3 is easy to read for any Christian, the middle 1/3 is hard and will offend most Christians (including me), but press through it because there is mind changing wisdom here, and the latter 1/3 is encouraging.I give thanks to God for this book.

Excellent. Doug Wilson wrote a quotable and wonderful book here. It should be read by anyone who is interested in Christian cultural engagement. Many great quotes and interesting strategies.

A few minor proof-reading issues, but a genuinely encouraging and entertaining read. Very uplifting for a generation of Christians who need to hear that it's ok (and even biblical) to throw themselves vigorously into the task of changing the world. Wilson as usual is earthy, direct and unashamed to move from theology to action. While I may not agree with him on all the finer details, I feel like Wilson says many of the things I think but have felt pressured by the world around me to shut up and keep quiet about.Theological or economic liberals are encouraged to wear a seatbelt.

It is shameful how the evangelical community has ostracized and alienated Wilson from a "seat at the table." This work is a demonstration of why he has created his own table with a greater prophetic voice than his naysayers.

Wilson cheerfully exposes and dismantles the opposition's strategies, and follows this up with a rebuilt gameplan for Christians, based on the truth of the Gospel rather than the Enemy's false narrative.

This book changed my life. I have been a gardener most of my life, and have felt a connection to nature even as a city dweller. But reading this book has deepened my experience of the natural world into a much more spiritual level unlike any other book I have read previously. The science is fascinating and understandable; the wisdom is awe-inspiring. It is a book that I open and read whenever I need to plant my feet on the ground again. I can't recommend this book more highly.

I was lucky enough to be a student of Dr. Kimmerer's at SUNY ESF. While there, I took every class she offered. Dr. Kimmerer has the kind of quiet voice that everyone hushes to hear, not wanting to miss a word of her eloquence. Reading this book has reminded me to cultivate my love for the Earth in ways that my daughters can participate in, and to recognize the relationship between people and nature as a two-way street. We do not simply destroy or protect nature - we evolved in direct relationship with plants, and plants evolved in direct relationship with us. As an environmental scientist, I like to think that I look at the world through a lens of love and concern for the earth, but this book pushes me further in love and hope and urgency.

This is not the "type of book" I would typically read, or thought I would enjoy. (I gravitate toward science, and abhor "storytelling). Nevertheless, this book was so highly recommended that I gave it a try. After only a few pages, I realized what a gift had so fortuitously come into my life. I fear I cannot adequately describe its profound essence -- part science, part wisdom, part communicator of the mysteries of animate "objects." All I can say is: read it and experience the magic for yourself. Thank you to all who took the trouble to recommend this book to me. I feel blessed and enriched for having read it.

This goes as a Top 10 Books of All Time in my opinion. Robin grew up in nature, was trained as a scientist, and returned to nature. This book seems to be the story of how she integrated these widely disparate traditions (scientific knowledge vs indigenous wisdom). For anyone who struggles with integrating science and naturalistic philosophy, this book may help illuminate the path along the way.As a medical student training in mainstream hospitals, this book is a lifeline. I read a few pages at a time and take notes along the way. I won't spoil it, but if you are thinking that maybe this book might be good ... it's good.

I cannot give this enough stars, because it would be 10 stars!Robin Wall Kimmerer is an amazing writer offering wisdom teachings from the plants and native teachings presented in a story that is her life's work.This book is a marriage of science based info and wisdom based teachings, and it is a work of art. Joyce then goes on to break the book of James down into chapters and expound on each one. She also includes space to ask yourself questions and to reflect on what you have read.Meyer's commentary on James is both beautiful on the outside and practical on the inside. The Biblical book of James is one of my favorites. I like her key reminder that we must have faith in God first and then we will do the good works that glorify Him. And that is the key, God is to get the glory and we are reminded that we don't and we need to have the faith to reflect Him to others. I truly appreciate Meyer's hard work to make this book so easy to understand and practical to use for the reader. I also like that there is space in the book to make notes and to remember my thoughts as I am reflecting on the book of James and her commentary. Meyer's teaching is deeply rooted in the Word and it is no surprise that she would write Bible commentaries. This book is a good general devotional commentary on James. It is good for general audiences as it does not go into Greek. Meyer at times comments on one verse while at other times covers up to twelve verses in her writing. There is usually a personal reflection question at the end of each section with space for journaling although some sections do not have it.There are some areas of her teaching I particularly like. One is her teaching on contentment (on James 4:1-3). “I have discovered that the secret of being content is to ask God for what I want and to rest in the knowledge that if it is right, He will bring it to pass at the right time.” That really precludes the greed and selfishness James wrote about.Another area of her strong teaching is on the tongue and our words. This is an important area for Meyer and she really emphasizes the effect our words can have on others. We are to use our words to prove our faith and trust in God. She also has a good section on what it means to keep God first in our lives. A good way to do that is to have a continual conversation with Him, she says.This commentary would be good for new Christians or ones not very familiar with the Bible. Meyer writes about the truth of James in a very understandable way. She does not explore puzzling or complex issues, such as how turning a sinner from his way will save his soul from death (James 5:19-20). Readers will gain encouragement and inspiration from the book of James as Meyer explains the practical teaching contained in it.I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. This is a good book for daily reinforcement of your goal. The bad weather threw me off track the past week. Reading this collection did give me hope; however, I don't feel like it is a book someone would read and say, "Oh. I'll do that!"

Bought this for my daughter, who just got interested in politics. Love the short chapters. So much wisdom here and I like the big paperback size.

You SAID it, Libba Bray!! #MakeAmericaSmartAgainSo this is a neat book targeted towards teenagers (but entertaining and inspiring for all of us) with essays, poems, songs and more creative work from all kinds of people, explaining why and how they "resist." Sometimes "resist" means protesting, or making art, or just being yourself in an unfriendly world - but in all cases, it means finding the truth, having compassion, and standing up for what's right. Three things this world could surely use a lot more of lately, and in the long run.I do wish the book had more visuals - art, photographs, more comics, etc. - as well as links to things like a recording of the song (shown in the book via sheet music), or but I love that it has a "reading list" of resistance books suggested by librarians from around the country!

Summary:The youth of today are getting more tech savvy, and understanding much more of what is going on in the world than I feel like I was at their age. They see the issues prevalent in the world that they will inherit; and they’re ready to start making a difference. The problem is, they’re too young to vote, and often aren’t taken very seriously. Add to that, they don’t always have the life experience or the confidence to be heard. Plus… all the issues, all the problems…. it all seems so huge that it could be overwhelming.Where do you begin? How do you find your way? Will it even matter? Through essays, interviews and other forms we go through these questions. Each piece is geared toward giving non violent ideas on how to be heard, choosing your platform, who to talk to…. along with the resounding message that the reader is not alone.My thoughts:I have a book hangover (*sips coffee*). I couldn’t put this book down, and ended up reading it- and rereading my favorite parts- in one day. My eBook is covered with highlights and notes. Actually, I also bought the audiobook and would consider the hardback as well if I didn’t think Warren would kill me.When I first heard about this book, I was ecstatic. If done right, this could be one of the most important books of the year to my mind. You have youths that are strong, articulate and courageous like Emma Gonzales. She inspires me, as I know she has thousands of others. But I feel like she is the exception, not the rule. Most young people aren’t ready for that sort of platform- some people like myself will never be. So what do you do? You still want to help, everyone wants to leave the world better than they found it. But it seems like too much- these things could swallow you whole!That’s where this book comes in. With every short story, essay, song and interview we are given clear, concise directives on what can be done behind the scenes. On steps that we can take, and people to contact. Not only that, but we are told time and again that we aren’t alone. I feel like that’s important. With every shared experience you get a sense of community and togetherness. The world isn’t so crazy when you know there are others that felt what you feel, and hear about what they did about it. The book both gave me peace from the gnawing anxiety that the news now gives me; along with hope. Almost serenity. I may not be able to do much…. but I have a voice and I can be heard. That is what I came away with (along with a hefty list of books that I could read as I move further into activism). I feel like it would do the same for my niece, and really for anyone. This is this the kind of book I wish I had as a teen. Especially when I was trying to figure out where my voice fit into the world that often times felt like it was drawn out by the angry voices of adults who were too busy yelling at one another vs taking the time to listen to each other when it came to opposing views. As an adult reading this book, it's a reminder that there is hope in our future generations. That the word resistance isn't a dirty word, or a political stance. Resistance is your stance on matters that mean something to you. It's standing your ground for who you are, what you believe in, and so forth, despite what the rest of the world may believe, or say. Activism is fighting for change.This book is not what I thought it would be. It was much better. It's a reminder of what resistance, activism and hope are, and how they're all tied together. It's also a reminder of the active role we all play in them. What this is book is not, is a yelling match of political sides going back and forth, telling the other why they're wrong. If anything, this book reads like a roundtable discussion of shared thoughts, and calls to actions by a variety of people who's diverse background have had them resisting societies labels on them since they were young. Their interviews, short essays, thoughts, songs, poems, and guides are a valuable resource to readers who see themselves in them.So much hate has been spewed since last year. I feel like resistance and activism are words that get thrown around with hate. They're not. They're hope. This book will make readers realize we can all be apart of the resistance (think Star Wars if you have to) in their own unique ways. In listening to what's being said in the words of this book, readers of all ages will understand why these authors, artists, and activists, collaborated on this book.I took some notes on the things that stood out to me while I read this book. Here's what I wrote down:* There is hope in the open acceptances of our future readers; teens.* Be educated; Be mindful; Be you! There are so many ways you can join a resistance.* "The way we stand strong in our diverse, supporting on another, standing up for the little guy, uniting against the things that are just blatantly unfair, protecting each other, having compassion for each other.... Stephen Burge took great pains to make absolutely sure the book was written in a way that literally anyone who has an interest in the subject can come away from this book knowing that if they didn't have a rock solid understanding of the material, then they really didn't have the interest to begin with. I can't say enough good things about this book. In addition, if you really want drill down and get a greater understanding of the most complex topics concerning Joomla, the book is full of references to online Joomla resources and forums.This book is pure, 100% gold. How many times have I gone to a source for an answer and been told, "....well, all ya gotta do is....". Sure easy for them so say; they use this stuff every day. So it was wonderful to find a book that lays things out in a simple and practical manner. Not that the text does not have its short-comings. Sometimes the author makes a point and then OVER-makes that point as in the case of explaining that format is consistent throughout the JOOMLA program. It would have been nicer if the author had used that energy to tweak some of the smaller issues like "how do I turn-off the details in an article?" and "How do I post a picture?" The answers were there but a bit buried. All the same, the tenor of the writing is easy-going and not condescending and is basic without being primitive. I'll accept some need for polishing and proofing as long as I get this information I need, and this book had it.

The author does a great job of walking the reader through a logical progression of steps to learn the basics of Joomla as well as best business practices for planning, creating, maintaining, and securing Joomla websites.

This book was a great overview of Joomla! Someone else had created my company website that I am now responsible for. I saw that this book was soon to be released, so I was anxious for it to come out. After struggling through Joomla! on my own, this book really gave some good tips that were extremely helpful, especially the CASh workflow (Categorize, Add, Show). I read through the book, but have not yet put many sections to use. There is so much to Joomla!, but the book made it easy to follow step-by-step. However, when selecting article types or module types, the author tells you which one to select, but not why. So with one of 12 options, we only used one, and I have no idea what all the other options are for. I was hoping to be quite proficient by the end of the book, but I now know that I'm only scratching the surface. I will continue to use the book as a reference, hoping to grasp the bigger concepts.

The most useful Joomla resource I have found. It answered all my questions. I often go back to it as a reference. Use it to get you started with Joomla.

I had previously bought the 2nd edition but wanted the updated version to better reflect the current state of Joomla. The book is an excellent guide for learning Joomla. Although there were a large number of editing errors as well as a few areas where the directions are either unclear or slightly incorrect. Overall, though, a good learning resource.
