Skip to the Negreanu section. It's going to be the most informative, helpful, and profitable toward your sessions.There are a lot of variables in poker. Every person is different; therefore, everyone's approach to the game is going to be different. However, you should always stick to your style while also switching gears and playing the opposite of the table (tight in a loose game, loose in a tight game).That said, Negreanu makes some great points about appearing weak and allowing your opponent to lead (even though that will no longer work for him). The most important quote in this book (for me) was a brief mention of an old player Daniel used to know. I don't remember it word for word, but it was something along the lines of, "Why do the pushing when the donkeys will do all the pulling?" Brilliant. Then again, I'm a much better defensive player than offensive player, so it works for me -- might not work for you.The small ball approach can greatly reduce stress and give skill a much bigger role (you play smaller pots so you have to grind your way to the top opposed to losing on one unlucky hand where you lose all your chips).Recommended, but skip right to the Negreanu section. Still well worth the investment (time and money).

The book is interesting and presents Negreaunu's "small-ball" strategy for poker. If you intend to play primarily cash games, I do not recommend this book. It is largely geared toward tournament players and deals with how to develop a strategy based on position, stack size, and how high the blinds are for the tournament. As a primarily cash game player, I did not find this helpful and I don't think the tournament focus of the book was well explained by the store page before I purchased it. The book does contain good contributions from multiple big name poker players, so it's interesting to learn their perspectives.The book focuses primarily on examples of hands rather than presenting overall concepts such as hand ranges to raise preflop by position, equity, pot odds, implied odds, pot control, etc. I also worry that the "small ball" strategy the book is based on is largely outdated and works primarily on ABC poker players who do not represent what you see at casinos and online these days (predominantly loose aggressive or passive players).

Negreanu is a famous player with some incredible hand reading capabilities. This book goes through different techniques and styles of different players (Daniel included off course). It's a more advanced book so if you are just beginning I would start off with other options to understand the basics.Daniel's style is very entertaining because it permits you to play lot's off hands trying to gather several small pots and avoiding big mistakes but it's not easy to implement. You should consider that to avoid the biggest mistakes Daniel uses he's hand reading capabilites.

If you've been wondering how "small ball" works in no-limit holdem tournaments Daniel does a great job of explaining its practice and benefits. He is, after all, currently the top money winner in poker. Even if that strategy doesn't fit your style it's great to know what others are capable of and why, and you also might want to use it occasionally as a change of pace in your own game. There are plenty of example hands in this volume, but not so many you get tired of them. I think this is as good of a book on NLH as any I've read, and I think it will become a classic.

This book has advice/strategy from several players. It has advice for the novice on how to bet pre-flop in order to avoid the flop (you can read most of this if you preview the book). Also included is advice for online players & cash game players (which I found minimally useful & why I "chopped" a star). The best part & longest part of the book is the last section written by Negreanu. Unfortunately, you can't preview this section. His small ball strategy is different from that of other big time winners I've read & that makes for an interesting read. You won't find the same stuff if you read Brunson or Hansen (both recommended). After reading this section, check out the WPT finals (season 3, I believe) to see his strategy in action.As a novice player, I found the beginning novice strategy somewhat useful (you can read most of it for free) & the middle section lacking. The "nuts" of the book is definitely Negreanu's section at the end. I would recommend doing with this book what I did with Brunson's book (skip to the end).

Love this book. Every page has you shaking you head trying to think, "how dod this happen". I have brought several other books in this series and they are all funny. So far none of the pictures are repeats. I will buy more.

Got this for my sister and her husband after they had asked me to take care of them their recycling and trash while they were out of town by confusing one with the other. After letting the them know what happened it turned out that the garbage collectors had messed up, I had ordered this before I found out I hadn’t done anything wrong but, I am going to give this to them for a Christmas gift as I had originally planned but now it will be a daily laugh for what had happened.

Hilarious and high quality desktop calendar. The pictures are easy to see and read, leading to plenty of laughs. Great xmas present idea!

A little disappointing because it sometimes is a "reach" that doesn't quite live up to the calendar's purpose and title. No match at all to the "stupid things said" calendar series.

We have this in our kitchen and every day we all wander over to look at it. And pretty much every day we chuckle. It's not smutty so the kids get some of the gags too. It's way better than the people of walmart calendar that I got. That was just juvenile and not funny.

I keep mine in the bathroom. Its lots of easy laughs, and provides a moral lesson. Do your job like someone is always watching, because in this day of electric eyes and phones, someone probably is.

I used this collection for a class in Russian Fiction. Generally it is a fine collection of decent translations, but you could wish for more. It should be noted, a good deal of these texts can be found online, for free. But, for the interested beginner in Russian Literature, this will keep you busy, though I prefer earlier Russian Lit personally.

This book has so much in it, its wonderful! we used it all semester long and I really enjoyed a lot of it!

I took a survey course in Russsian literature back in 2001 and I appreciated this most of all the books we used.The reason is that for many of us starting out in Russian literature, the 20th century contains many more authors and works than the 19th that we hadn't heard of and didn't know exist.And sure enough even some of the more obscure and shorter works of, for example, Klebnikov, Sinyavsky, Blok or Zoshchenko turn out to be vibrant, well written, highly relevant and highly original.In short this is a great resource for discovering Russian literature and also turns out to be a good way to get ahold of some pieces that aren't all that easy to find.

I bought this book for a course in Russian short fiction, and two years later I still find myself coming back to it. There are many great examples of Soviet and pre-Soviet writing in this anthology, the complete text of Olesha's novella "Envy", as well as some excerpts from longer works like "The Master and Margarita" and "Dr. Zhivago".True to the Russian literary tradition, most of the pieces occupy a bizarre liminal space between incredibly funny and incredibly disturbing. The author I'm most grateful for having been introduced to through this volume is Danill Kharms, an absurdist writer from the early Soviet era. His "Anecdotes about Pushkin's Life" mocks the kind of hero worship prevelant in the literary world by presenting a series of ridiculous one-paragraph stories that make little to no sense, but are quite funny.Other highlights in this book include Zamayatin's (authour of "We") "The Cave", Babel's "My First Goose", Platonov's "The Potudan River", Zoshchenko's bureaucratic allegory "Bees and People", Gorky's "Recollections of Leo Tolstoy", and Shalamov's Gulag horror story "Lend Lease".This book is well worth getting, and you'll find yourself returning to it over and over again, each time finding something new.

I ordered this book as I am a vet student and we only get cows and horses in large animal anatomy. This is a helpful guide, although some of the information is straight up wrong. My book came with a lot of inked writing from the last owner, so many of the corrections were already made for me. This is the only goat anatomy book I have found. The illustrations/diagrams are beautiful, I would buy it for them alone.

Great diagrams.

We have a copy of this book in the anatomy lab at my vet school. I use it constantly for the goat labs. the illustrations are great. I came up here hoping to get a copy.. but the price is ridiculous. You can probably find the same stuff online for free.

However, I wish it had a chapter on accountability and how to reboot when things go awry due to younger leaders' missteps. Also that anyone in the chain of leadership can fall to the "superpastor" syndrome or "know it all" syndrome. When that leads to sin in the ranks of upcoming leaders, how does a church set the guidelines for acceptability? Or how does a supervisor hold to biblical standards of behavior and consequences while protecting privacy appropriately? What strategies work for teamwork when the leadership chain has human shortcomings, including hubris? There are hints here, like a paragraph on trust p. 79 and "connect then correct" on p 108, but these issues deserve more attention.I have found that emphasis on the saving grace of Christ, coupled with clear expectations and consequences is difficult when a church wants young people so badly that it ignores cultural stressors in the lives of immature Christians.

So… you’ve probably found your way to this review because you care about young people. Me too! I’m glad we have that in common. I bet we have another thing in common… the struggle of determining just what exactly to do about it. This field is so full of ‘feelings’ and ‘personal experiences' it is difficult to sort out what is worth listening to and what will work in your context. Here is what Growing Young brings to the table: research based findings.It’s not common, and I REALLY like it.What the actual research shows is actually quite different from many of the conclusions myself and others have reached about millennials and what they are looking for spiritually. I don’t think I realized how many preconceived notions I had about millennials (despite the fact that I am one of them)… and most of those notions were discouraging at best. The findings presented in Growing Young are exciting! They are completely in-line with scripture! They give me hope! They are going to change my approach to ministry in many ways!Despite being based on research, the book presents the findings in a very readable and relatable way. They also do a great job of providing you with tangible ways to make the leap from simply becoming educated on the issues to doing something about them. I don’t care what place you might hold in your church, from upper level leadership to low-person on the totem pole… you CAN have an impact in helping your church ‘grow young’ and in the process become a healthier, better functioning, God-pleasing body of believers. The time and money you spend on this resource will most definitely pay out dividends! In fact, I suspect after reading it you’ll buy another copy to share. I did.

I picked up this book because Sticky Faith was so helpful, but it's a few years old, and so I was thinking this one might continue in the same trajectory (it's the same author). At my church, we are working on a comprehensive plan to make faith stick more in our young people, and I'm reading voraciously to get ideas. After having read Powell's other books, this one was disappointing. It lacks depth. It would probably be appropriate for someone who is just starting to think about young people in church. But, if like me, you've been thinking about this for a long time, save yourself the trouble and don't read this book.

This review is a protest vote. I bought it after reading the October 28 interview with Ed Stetzer on his popular CT blog “the Exchange,” and was eager to see the results of the study. The book is one result of the Churches Engaging Young People (CEYP) project by the Fuller Youth Institute, which represented an enormous amount of time and effort. From their research documents: “The goal of the project was to understand how and why exemplary churches are effectively engaging teenagers and emerging adults.” The primary research question was “What congregational practices lead to effective engagement of young people?” However, the research design cannot answer the research question, so the book does not answer the question. That alone is not cause for protest, but I object to the book drawing conclusions and making recommendations that go beyond what the data can support. It’s not right to use “its research!” as evidence of credibility and then sell ancillary materials, assessments, coaching, etc. as if they’re based on solid evidence when the research has serious limitations.The design is essentially a description of a highly select sample with no comparison group, because they collected information only on successful churches and not unsuccessful churches. Although this does yield a list of common characteristics, there is no basis to assert that these characteristics have anything to do with the success of the churches in working with youth.To illustrate why the design cannot answer the research question, consider the hypothetical example of identifying common characteristics of winning race horses. Imagine that a sample of recent winners produces these top three characteristics of winning race horses: they’re brown, they’re expensive, and they have big heavy hearts. The first common characteristic (brown) is merely incidental and likely because a lot of horses are brown. There’s no attempt to determine whether winning race horses are more likely to be brown than losing race horses, and there’s nothing about the color of a horse that would suggest that it is in any way responsible for helping the horse win. So “take Jesus’ message seriously” is probably a goal of all evangelical churches, whether or not they are successful with youth. With respect to being expensive, this is an instance of reverse-causality—they’re expensive because they win, and so for example if successful churches are empathizing with young people (another one of the core commitments they identify), this could be due to the large proportion of youth in these churches (e.g., increased opportunity for interaction) and not the other way around. The last characteristic—large heavy hearts—probably plays a causal role in race horses running faster, but “large” implies a comparison group as in “larger than the hearts of the losing race horses.” The CYEP project had no such comparison group, so for example “take Jesus’ message seriously” might be equally present (or even more present) in unsuccessful churches.So the absence of a comparison group is a serious threat to the conclusions the authors draw because the design can’t answer the research question. We just don’t know if the core convictions they identify actually differentiate between success and failure—as they may be equally present in churches that aren’t doing well with youth. If we don't know that the characteristics identified predict success, then we also don't know if doing these things will lead to success.Furthermore, correlation does not imply causation—which they acknowledge. In fact, they don’t appear to present any correlations in the book (e.g., “churches with more college students had more service opportunities”). They then deny and ignore this caveat: “However, we’re confident that the CEYP Project has identified six core commitments demonstrably present.” That is just as irresponsible as asserting that although the fact that winning race horses are brown and expensive may not contribute to their success, buyers should look for expensive brown horses if they want to win. I wish they would have included some correlational results. For example, before they started they hypothesized that 8 characteristics would be present, but they never report on whether or not these 8 characteristics were, in fact, present in successful churches.In my opinion, there was also a specification problem. That is, the research and book leaves out many variables that are probably important. They made little reference to the fact that youth are often in high school or college, which would appear to have implications for the study (e.g., are these churches close to universities? Do these churches have a lot of families with high school students?). There was no talk of attracting Christians (e.g., transfer growth) vs. winning previously unchurched and unbelieving youth (e.g., conversion growth). It would make a big difference to me to learn about churches that reach youth as opposed to being the church where Christians from local universities attend or retaining the children of the church’s parents in their congregations. Given the design of the study, the book could have been strengthened with more theology for the points the authors were trying to make. Unfortunately this was also lacking because the book is based on research, so the authors didn’t spend a lot of time on theology.So if you want to know what congregational practices lead to effective engagement of young people, the answers provided by this book should be taken with a grain of salt until they are verified with some theology, reasoned argument, or additional research findings.
