One of the worst books I’ve read in a long time. This woman’s constant running thoughts of how amazing her life is could not be more boring. She repeats herself in how blessed she is with her children, fancy house, furnishings, and how perfect she is as a wife and mom. Oh but she is sooo insecure too? Pages and pages of her rambling thoughts. On and on and on... Pass this boring drivel by.
Marianne & Simon have been married for 10 years. They have identical twin boys (6 years of age) & they're raising Simon's daughter from his 1st marriage. (She's 17, now. She was 7, when they met.) Her mother (Simon's 1st wife) committed suicide.Marianne is the only child of a single mother who was chronically depressed & couldn't cope with life. She handed Marianne over to social workers, when she was 3. Most of her childhood was spent in the constant upheaval of foster homes.Simon is a gorgeous, brilliant, successful cardiac surgeon. He has the looks, the wit, the intellect to charm a woman. But, he criticizes, bullies & humiliates Marianne, especially in front of their children. She rarely, if ever, challenges him. She tries to hide the tension, the bickering & the lies but the kids see alot.He's having an affair with Caroline; a colleague, a peer, someone on his level. She's stunning, tall & slender. And, she's one of the youngest surgeons to qualify in her field. She comes from a family of very talented doctors.Marianne obsessively follows her on social media, while she strives to be the perfect wife & mother, to prove to Simon that he doesn't need anyone else. She spends her days worrying that she's not good enough & Simon will leave her. It's seriously affecting her mental health & is damaging her marriage. She eventually realizes that her behavior has always been a perfectly natural reaction to life with a violent, cruel & cheating husband.Marianne trespasses on her husband's life by reading his damning emails to & from Caroline. It confirms they have more than a working relationship. Simon, a pompous controlling prick, continues to convince his needy, vulnerable wife that she has a genetic propensity to mental illness. In fact, years ago, he had her admitted to a psychiatric hospital where she was sedated, prescribed strong anti-anxiety meds & had weeks of electroconvulsive therapy. That's why she can't confront him about the emails. He'll have her sectioned, again. She used to trust him but not anymore.Caroline posts a baby scan photo on Instagram. She's pregnant with Simon's child. Marianne's marriage is over. She's endured his moods, selfishness, cruelty & womanizing long enough. But, she's not going to let Simon & his home-wrecking mistress take her children.Caroline's rosy future with Simon & their new baby is about to hit a few roadblocks. I did not care for this story much at all. Don’t get me wrong...I wanted to find out the ending. However, I could not identify with the main character...I found myself skipping pages of “dialogue†just to get this book finished. I believe the actual storyline is interesting, but I can not stand when the “story†is repetitive throughout the storytelling.
I don’t read romantic comedies so I probably won’t ever read her other books. :( She nailed this psychological thriller and I wish she’d write more. I devour psych thrillers so I know the whole spectrum. They ALL claim a gripping twist but not all pull it off. What begins as a pretty typical cliche plot line becomes just a set up for very well disguised twist and turns. I began to doubt what was real in the story as much as the protagonist. A true psychological thriller!! Hats off and much respect to the author. Tricking your reader and keeping them guessing is a true art and great pleasure for the reader.SPOILER ALERT I thought I had Jen figured out as the other mistress and killer. I was so happily wrong. ðŸ˜
For awhile, I found the characters riveting and couldn't wait to read how the story would play out. Then, at some point, I realized that I was only a third is the way through the book and the story was staying firmly rooted in the main character's head as she had the same thoughts over and over again. I was getting bored. On top of that, the writing for the character started strong and became uneven as the book progressed. I was able to finish and the ending was satisfying.
Basically a good story but too wordy! I turned pages just to get through the word vomit. The main character Marianne obsesses about everything , her children are all consuming. I was losing my patience trying to get to the "meat" of the story. When Marianne develops a backbone and decides to fight for her family is when the story really takes off. The last third of the book kept my interest. I had my suspicions about the ending but I was wrong. Many revelations , wow !!!
I am baffled by the high ratings for this book. I read 25% and thought I was going to go as crazy as Marianne, the main character. I never Not finish a book, but I made an exception for this. The first chapters repeatedly said the same thing over and over and over. The storyline is miserable. Abusive husband. Mentally unbalanced wife. Sad children. There was nothing that could have redeemed this book. Even the $2.99 I paid for this was too much.
I loved this book!Thank you to the author for not writing the multiple narrator perspective (alternating between two or three characters), as I am pretty worn on that approach. I love a good unreliable narrator and that is exactly what you get with this book. You are just waiting to see what kind of chaos these characters are going to unleash on each other.I figured out the “twists†early on, but even with that said, I really enjoyed this book. Well written, well developed characters, and a fascinating story.I highly recommend this one if you enjoy a good thriller.
