What can I say. Tor keeps growing and despite what he says and thinks about himself, he is a hero. And just a heads-up this one is a cliffhanger. And there are other shocking events as well. Hold on to your hats because this is a wild ride. It just gets better and better.

Tor, as he says of himself, he is not a hero, grows into the habit to become a hero.He relights on Saborook, his dragon, but he wasn't there, where he needed him most. She went to help someone else, bless her heart.Tor's situation grows tense. will he get out of it with Zin, the grazy one, or not the crazy one? Is there more behind her?The ending? Hmm. hope he will make it alive

Would recommend the series to those who like dragons, and adventure with young people

It truly leaves you wondering about what the next part of the story will bring.

EPISODE 5: An exciting episode that seems to move quickly. The reader will profit from either reading it slowly the first time (Ha! bet you can’t!) or going back and re-reading it to catch all the nuisances. Zin is spouting prophecies that have so much more meaning on re-reading. There is a major test in this episode, which he must pass in order to start on the course that seems to be laid out for him or some other Hero, to assume leadership in this time of upheaval by the Magikas.*OVERVIEW for those wanting more details**An episode wherein Tor is tested on the Seat of Judgement and found to be worthy of ruling, although this is not welcomed in the mountain city. That test leaves Tor feeling as if he has been “born again” in that the experience has allowed him to gain insight into all kinds off people, all sorts of trouble and problems, fight in heretofore unimaginable battles.......it changes him into a different, more insightful and mature young man. In choosing Tor, the Seat of Judgement marks him with an undeniable mark of Ko, this time on his face. Tor must use the knowledge he gained during the test to escape Apeq and his “golems”, and rescue Hubric, Kyrowat, Zyla and Zin.CRITIQUE: Once again, an exciting adventure awaits the reader. The storyline takes a more sober tone as the test unfolds and Tor responds to it. We see Tor mature right before our eyes. Imaginative machines powered by *****(the reader will learn what) are ready to be unleashed by Apeq in his power bid. The tenuous relationship between Zyla and Tor is sweet, yet wrought with misunderstandings and the uncertain feelings experienced by teens in their first relationship. This episode leaves one hungry for the next.I received a free copy of this book. I am gladly sharing my thoughts about it.

*I read this book via Kindle Unlimited*Where to begin? I really enjoyed this book more so than the others. This is book # 5 in the Dragon Chameleon series. The character development of Tor that is showing itself has made me rethink Tor a bit. That was probably because Tor did not annoy me as much as he had previously (if you would like to know who did-Zyla.) Oh, you don’t know who that is? Well, let me take this chance to say you should catch up and find out who she is. The pacing in this book was amazing. It was fast paced, but not so much so that you can’t keep up with the plot line. Tor is doing hero type things without thinking he’s a hero. He helps everyone, but puts himself in danger to do so…often. That seems to be a big theme throughout the series so far. What makes someone a hero? What makes someone a friend? What makes someone family? This book starts to answer these questions and I look forward to seeing where it takes me as a reader. The entertainment factor comes from watching Tor fumble around certain aspects of his life *cough* girls *cough* It was amusing yet unsettling at the same time because there were times when I read it and thought “if he is doing it just for…” I felt like the story was trying to short change Tor in that aspect. Overall, the book was enjoyable and the ending set up nicely for the next book. Heroes don’t become heroes just by their beginnings. It takes hard work to make a hero character into someone that the readers can be proud of and I believe Tor will be there soon enough. If you like reading about characters who stumble and fall while trying to find their way in the world and who have a dragon as a companion then you should read this book. You won’t regret it.

Where oh where is Saboraak? And Tor, brave Tor, bold Tor, what is he to do now, after that gruesome discovery?Quote: “Well, we were in quite the pickle. Saboraak was bound by honor to help her own. I was bound to prevent a war. Bataar thought he was bound to prophecy and legend. We were quite the bunch.”A dragon with a big heart and a boy with a big mouth. And Zin, she is…I don’t know how to put it. More capable than we thought? Less crazy? There’s more to her than meets the eye, that’s for sure.I was holding my breath the entire time. I could NOT stop reading. I did miss Saboraak. She doesn’t have a big role in this episode. I just love her to bits!!!Yes, a big ol’ cliffy but I don’t mind because this series is being written so fast I never have to wait long for the next episode. The quality of this series is so high!

Can this series get any Better?Tor is on a mission, I really difficult, dangerous and stupid mission. And what's worse? He's on his own for a while, with only Zin as back up.Zyla is captured, Baraak has made a challenged, Sabarook has to help her own kind but hates that she has to leave Tor on his ownAnd Tor? Well he keeps complaining of how much he isn't a hero and yet he always manages to do hero work.We are in for a ride of emotions, for example, happiness and fright, sadness and anger, a bit of jealousy (mostly by Tor) and even betrayal! I promise you, you will be shocked!Join Tor and in his adventures now! You'll love his inner monologue and over dramatised speeches and actions! Definitely worth it!Received a copy from the author herself, for an honest review, thank you!

I found this book fascinating in many respects. It is full of information about Afghanistan, the traditional culture, and the changes to women’s lives that occurred with the various foreign powers that exerted control over the country.Afghanistan is a very strict patriarchal society. The importance of a male offspring is paramount. A pregnant woman is said to dream the sex of her unborn child. She is at fault if she does not have a boy. The community looks down upon families that do not have a male child. Sometimes a family that has had no male offspring will announce the birth of a boy and dress a girl baby as a boy. At times, the community knows this is a girl pretending to be a boy, but even a fake boy is better than a girl. This practice called “Bacha Posh” is not officially acknowledged but is not uncommon in the society. Sometimes a family will justify the need for a fake boy because a male child can go out and work in the community and bring in money for the family. A female cannot get a job or play outside; girls are kept inside, and in some cases, forbidden to even look out the window. When the “bacha posh” reaches puberty, she is expected to revert back to being female and is expected to marry. In some cases, “bacha posh” resist the change back to a female role, since the relative freedom and power is in sharp contrast to an Afghan woman’s existence. Boys have more fun. Girls’ lives are severely restricted. If the bacha posh stays as a male pretender past puberty, the transition back to a female can be a problem, and the girl may never feel her place as a woman. The author came to Afghanistan to investigate the practice of “Bacha Posh”. She interviews many women in the communities, including Azita. Azita is a politician who is a member of Parliament, but she has very little power as a woman. Azita’s father, a Kabul University Professor, had admired her intellect and wanted a great future for his daughter. During the period when the Russians had exerted control over Afghanistan, female equality, including equal rights to an education, was emphasized. Azita received a quality education. However, when the Taliban came to power, her worried father forced her to marry a cousin, an illiterate son of a farmer who beat her and expected her to live with his first wife and children and still provide for the extended family. Azita had twin girls and no male offspring. Desperate to save face with the community and keep her standing as a politician, she pretended one of the twins was a boy. Her female child Mehran, was made a basha posh. The book is primarily the author’s research, her observations in Afghanistan through her eyes. Some artistic license came into play. One character in the book was really a fusion of a few different people. Decidedly the book has historical significance and is worth reading. There is a good deal to learn here. Bravo for most of the book. Too bad the author ruined the ending.Unfortunately, the book is tainted with faulty science. The last part of the book was disappointing and in sharp contrast to most of the writing. Once the author gets away from her detailed observations and starts to draw conclusions that she is not qualified to make, there is a problem. At the end of the book, her conclusions are even more elucidated. The author insists evidence shows that there are almost no real differences in male and female brains from birth. They are essentially the same. The environment is the determining factor. A child is raised a certain way and expected to act a certain way. A child forms habits associated with the male or female sex. These learned behaviors are ingrained and feel natural to the child. This kind of faulty science is harmful and goes against the research and thorough conclusions of the professionals in the American Psychiatric Association. Children are born with different masculine and feminine tendencies from their birth. However, in the author’s view, a gay child can be changed to the “correct” sexual orientation by therapy. This is the view proclaimed by certain conservative groups in this country, groups that do not believe in science. I find this very disturbing.I would have given this book a five-star rating if the author had kept her writing to observations about Afghan society. In fact, I was raving about this book to several friends before the author changed course. Despite the excellent quality of most of the book, I can only give her 3 stars due to the false “scientific” conclusions she insists upon delivering to her readers.

Headline:The Underground Girls of Kabul is an extremely readable, yet heart-breaking and eye-opening immersion in a culture that is brutal to women. It would also make a great choice for book clubs.Major Themes:Women’s rights, patriarchal societies, the Middle East, Islam, the Taliban, marital dynamics, war, gender identityWhat I Liked:- This is one of those books where you learn a ton, but don’t realize it. I felt like I was just reading a story, but I might as well have been taking a course on life in Afghanistan (particularly for women), Islam, the Taliban, and the affects of war on regular Afghans.- The book goes way beyond the Afghan (actually, this custom can also be found in many other countries) custom of girls living as boys. It paints a vivid picture of what it means to be an Afghan woman, the importance Afghans place on every family having a son, gender and sexuality issues, marital dynamics, and patriarchal societies.- Nordberg clearly explained why Afghan families sometimes raise their daughters as sons and emphasized that there are a variety of reasons a family might choose this path. Though some of these reasons are inexplicable to a Westerner (i.e. having a bacha posh ensures that, via “magic”, the next child will be a son), Nordberg helped me understand how these people, given their history, customs, and surroundings, could resort to such beliefs.Nordberg focused on a rare female member of Parliament, Azita, to illustrate the broader bacha posh custom. Using Azita as the focal point gave me a specific person to root for.- This book was chock full of “did you know” tidbits, which I love in my nonfiction. For example, Afghans idolize Jack Bauer from the TV show 24, Afghan women’s rights actually improved during the Soviet occupation (because the Soviets de-emphasized religion), Thursday nights in Afghanistan are for “conjugal traditions”, and Saudi Arabia first allowed women to participate in the Olympics in 2012.What I Didn’t Like:- Nordberg touched on the Afghan population’s general impressions of its various occupiers over the years, but I was particularly curious about this and wished she’d gone a bit deeper. It was fascinating that the Afghans actually viewed the Soviets as liberators from “mujahideen infighting”, but I couldn’t quite get a handle on what they think of the Americans (although, this could probably comprise an entirely separate book).A Defining Quote:"Regardless of who they are, whether they are rich or poor, educated or illiterate, Afghan women often describe the difference between men and women in just one word: freedom. As in: men have it, women do not."Good for People Who Like:Investigative journalism, books about marriage, books that make you think, women’s issuesCheck out my blog, Sarah's Book Shelves, for more reviews.

The underground girls are people born female, but raised as boys, even though the deception may be an open secret, simply because of the social disadvantages attaching to families with only girl children. As you might imagine, at some stage, most of these "boys" are obliged to turn back into girls, which can be hard on them. The author becomes friendly with several of these women and we learn how they are doing later in their lives, some having married. I also learned quite a bit about Afghanistan, its present condition, the influence of the Taliban, and Afghan marriages. With the Taliban in abeyance, a few women have even entered politics, but I got the impression that very few women have much freedom--or even happiness--in Afghanistan, so the book left me feeling somewhat frustrated and sad. Still, well worth reading, and it is an easy read, too, not a dry social study sort of thing.

I first read the Tao Te Ching in college. Somewhere along the line I lost that copy so I decided to pick up this one (especially since it had such high reviews). This copy seemed much different than the one I read years back. And I am not just talking about the author's choice to use female pronouns as well as male pronouns in his version (incidentally - how close can one get to awareness of Tao if one allows oneself to get hung up on seeing "He" rather than "She" in the teachings?).In one portion of this "tao de ching: A New English Version" ("Version" is the key word) the author chooses to translate "When the Tao is absent in a country,/ war horses are bred on the borders" to "When a country goes counter to the Tao, Warheads are stockpiled outside the cities". This author has written his "modernized" version of the Tao Te Ching and he claims to have been open in this fact, supposedly by him using the terms "A New English Version". When one reads further one in the notes you see the author admitting he does not even know Chinese (so his interpretation of the Tao is from other translations - and how he thinks the lines should read for poetics sake, or P.C. sake, etc).At first I thought I would not write a review on this book. But when seeing the author admit to what I had suspected it made me feel like I really got ripped off. If you are looking for a translation of the Tao Te Ching do not get this author's book. The author respects the Tao but this is not the real deal. I will be purposefully losing this book and looking for a better translation.

I had no idea what to expect of this book when It arrived. I turned it over in my hands and it was clearly very short in length, so I decided to just read a few pages while I finished my morning coffee. One and a half hours later I had finished the book entirely, along with my coffee, and I immediately knew upon completion that I would read this book many, many more times in my life.It was a highly profound, dare I say life changing read that dramatically impacted my perspective towards my own happiness and how I interact with others. Written as a collection of very short, almost poem-like chapters, often each occupying less than a single page, this book is a masterfully crafted guide to find real happiness and fulfillment in your life. It is a tome that empowers you, humbles you, and leads you around the pitfalls that so many humans fall into throughout their lives. It is not a modern self help book with life-hacks, habit forming tips, or other such articulations, but rather a fundamental, deep, and moving look at what makes up a fulfilling life.If you are someone who has discovered mindfulness, explores meditation, or ponders philosophy, then this book is, without question, a must-read.And if you are more of a go-getter. A driven entrepreneurial type who is looking more or straightforward advice on building your business, achieving goals and finding ‘success’, then I encourage you more-so than anyone else to pick this book up.It has helped me make difficult business decisions, cut through the unimportant details and roadblocks, optimize my time, and improve my relations with my clients and really everyone else in my life for that matter. It is a book for the true winners, who understand that karma is practical, and that compassion is the path to real success. It is a book that I will cherish for the rest of my life, and I feel indebted to the author and translator for bringing its wisdom into the world.

As with so many books, we endure the scholarly and erudite reviewers who claim to know which text and translation is the most recondite, the most accurate, the most true to the original. I don't know about all that. I know Lao Tsu was so important to Asian culture and life, and I know this book makes me feel whole again with each reading. I slow down, and his true words align the iron filings in my heart.Let the educated debaters go on with their "Ten thousand things" arguing about translations and meanings. They miss the point. Get this book, make some tea, turn of the incessant rattlings in your brain and the screens in your home and relax to ancient wisdom that has influenced millions of hearts and minds for thousands of years...

This book is very confusing to read because of the way its been printed. There's no uniformity; Instead of having one verse per page and then a commentary section, there's several verses on one page with different types and sizes of font throughout so visually it looks very cluttered and crammed together and it's not enjoyable to read. It looks like a cheap, self-publishing project gone wrong. It's such an important text, it's disappointing that they didn't take more care to make it more readable.

American Genius: A Comedy, by Lynne Tillman

Review

Praise for American Genius, A Comedy “Tillman’s beautifully constructed sentences create their own propulsion, able to take a reader in any direction at any moment. From the opening pages, a singular consciousness emerges, both porous and radically isolated, and by stripping out most other elements, the book confirms the ultimate primacy of literary voice, of which this is a rare triumph.” ―Lidija Haas, Vulture, 1 of the 100 Most Important Books of the 2000s . . . So Far "If you’re looking for a book to really just get lost in, this re-release of Lynne Tillman’s dense, winding, frantically brilliant novel is a good bet. Notice I didn’t say safe bet, because there’s little that’s safe within these pages. Instead, you’ll find the profane, twisted, knife edge-sharp thoughts of a former historian who is meditating on everything from the concept of sensitivity to the Manson murders. And you’ll receive these thoughts in the inimitable literary stylings of Tillman, who goes places few other writers can even conceive of existing." ―Kristin Iversen, NYLON "American Genius, A Comedy is a novel of digression. Refusing linear plot for the meandering structure of recollection, the book takes the form of an stream-of-thought monologue delivered by a former American historian residing in a mysterious, clinic-like setting that might be a sanatorium or an artist’s retreat but might also be something more sinister. In slippery paragraphs always on the edge of incoherence, we hear about the narrator’s interest in baths, textiles, underarm waxing, the quirks and habits of most of her co-patients, and the history of slavery. A portrait of excessive interiority." ―TANK Magazine "If Jane Austen were pulled along a post-modern highway into the 21st century, forced to shed her fixation on marriage being the ultimate happy ending, the resulting novel might read a little like this." ––Ruby Brunton, Cleveland Review of Books"Tillman gives us a mind hilariously on fire with compensatory distractions, bristling with facts that may not help at all . . . The woman’s mind spins, and with it a voice that’s ardent and ironic, knowing and oblivious, repetitive and contradictory . . . What kind of 'comedy' is this? . . . The comedy, surely of a sort of late modernism, familiar from Samuel Beckett and Thomas Bernhard: novelists whose narrators simply can’t be quiet, but find themselves yammering away, the brain always buzzing, dry lips smacking and teeth clacking as their stories and theories and opinions come tumbling out . . . American Genius, A Comedy was timely in 2006, and still feels queasily of our moment." ––Brian Dillon, 4Columns Praise for American Genius, A Comedy (2006) “The narrative voice is manic, neurotic, self-generative, very smart, loopy, deeply vulnerable, closely (obsessively) observant, narcissistic, and eminently contemporary. It is also very funny. Flawed, beautiful, sacred, insane.” ―George Saunders “American Genius is a masterpiece.”―Harry Mathews “To read Tillman’s tightly woven novel, which meshes inner and outer realms as well as past and present, is to enter into an intense relationship, a communion with another spirit, perhaps with some sort of genius. An involvement that, like all forms of heightened attention, be it friendship, love, hate, or pursuits intellectual or creative, is demanding and bewitching, harrowing and bemusing, revelatory and transforming.” ―Donna Seaman, Bookforum “Tillman’s prose builds to poetic brilliance.” ―Entertainment Weekly “What emerges here is a bold showcase of a novel, a cabinet of curiosity, a proposal for what fiction could be.” ―The New York Times Book Review “Reading the novel is like entering a room crowded with peculiar portraits, all brilliantly drawn. The book is a consummate work, one that levels Western history with family dynamics, pet deaths, Manson family references, the Zulu alphabet, skin disorders, and the loss of memory that afflicts us both personally and as a nation. Tillman once again proves herself a rare master of both elegant and associative writing, urging us to enter the moment, which is all we have and simultaneously cannot keep.” ―San Francisco Bay Guardian “If I needed to name a book that is maybe the most overlooked important piece of fiction in not only the ’00s, but in the last 50 years, [American Genius, A Comedy] might be the one. I could read this back to back to back for years.” ―Blake Butler, HTMLGiant “I don’t know if there’s a precedent for this charming, maddening, brilliant, painstaking, and utterly mesmeric book.” ―Garth Risk Hallberg, The Millions “To unravel the mordant skeins and associative daisy chains of American Genius is, quite often, to feel oneself gently possessed by the mind and memories of another. Tillman’s work infers that such a transmission is an ideal for fiction―that narrative isn’t just a means of organizing experience, but the stuff of consciousness itself.” ―Slate “Tillman explores in all its minutiae how true sensitivity is both paralysing and liberating. When the meandering journey of American Genius finally ends, you might find you’ve come farther than you thought possible.” ―The Guardian

Although this novel has a very specific plot that may limit its appeal to wide readership, there is no doubt about the quality of its artistry. Tillman has taken a concept and executed it well. What surprises me is that none of the reviewers on this site or on the book jacket recognize its most obvious inspiration: Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain. In Tillman's version of the psychosomatic seeking respite (from the world at large and finding a microcosm of carnival-mirror traits in her artists colony) the world is decidedly 21st century. But the reflections of the protagonist are as human, and therefore timeless, as Mann's. She plays with the flow of time the way Mann did, and uses personal ruminations to reflect both the character of the protagonist and the society from which she is temporarily escaping. Tillman uses the dining hall, bedroom, walking excursions, and seance in ways like Mann did, and with a similar type of wry humor. Her ambitions were less for political symbolism than Mann's. She musters a good dose of talent in her writing. Much recommended for serious readers.

Chosen by our book discussion group. We found it more enjoyable in discussion, when we could unwrap it, as it were, than it had been in the reading. As a psych R.N. I found it very much like being at work, listening to this hypomanic flight of ideas. Tillman has it down pat, the constant monologue, which keeps circling back to the same topics and obsessions.

Tillman definitely has some game. Her style is challenging, engaging, and engrossing. However, I don't feel as moved as many of the other reviewers I have read. This might be a sad comment on my own psyche, but.....I just didn't care about the narrator. Tillman's style is superb, and the mystery of the setting was masterfully executed. Still, I just couldn't work up any interest in the life of the narrator. Tillman does a remarkable job of taking you deep inside the mind of her narrator. I just didn't find much of interest once I arrived.

Although I enjoyed this book for the interesting style in which it was written it was not an easy read. I found myself putting it down after 30 minutes or so because the stream of conciousness stlye offered me no relief from my own brain.

AMERICAN GENIUS draws you in with the dexterity of Scheherezadem so don't plan on doing a lot of other things because hours will go by, and you'll still be there hanging on every word of the mysterious, yet utterly candid narrator, a woman who seems to be on a permanent vacation from the realities of her ordinary life, so that in a way, this is the updated, and very NY version of M. HULOT'S HOLIDAY. But is it a holiday entirely? Or has, perhaps, our narrator stepped outside the bonds of society and is being incarcerated in this strange place, like THE YELLOW WALLPAPER or THE SNAKE PIT? Women have long written about being clapped into one sort of prison or another, but rarely so enigmatically. I dare you to work it out, indeed part of the miracle of the book is seeing, with such inflected pleasure, just how long Tillman can keep up the balancing act of keeping you guessing. For in other ways the world the narrator finds herself in is like one of those artists' colonies one always hears about, where they bring you lunch to the door of your cottage, then tiptoe away so as not to disturb the "genius" within.Or it could be any sort of other place of temporary lodging, like the inn in Chaucer. "Flee, flee, this sad hotel," Anne Sexton wrote, but in many ways this place suits our narrator, and the other guests or inmates or whatever they are afford her (and us) endless hours of amusement and speculation, just as they did M. Hulot, or Henry James. "I'm not trapped here," she keeps telling us, or maybe she's trying to reassure herself. Each "guest" has a turn in the sun, each a little lesson in characterization, just the way they share their communal meals, or turn away from each other, or form little alliances that may or may not include our longsuffering artist with the sensitive skin. And yet by the end of the book we may decide that all that characterization aside, only a very few figures remain with us, strong trees on which the spiderwebs have entangled themselves. There is our narrator herself, bemused, sophisticated, and yet nursing childhood hurts and ancestral memories that mark her out as different even to herself--her world defined by how thin her skin is, how tender and how untouched. There's her brilliant father, not so much rapacious as passionately interested in everything except for that which his daughter holds dear. "It was my father who first made me conscious of the cherry on the back of my upper thigh." Thanks, Dad! And there's the Polish cosmetologist, superbly assured, highly skilled, European servility turned on its head to wear the mask of the master. She's great. Most strange of all, most touching, the real-life figure of "Manson Girl" Leslie Van Houten, imprisoned for real after umpteen appeals for parole, her memories of killing Sharon Tate and the rest fading away like spots on gold lame, her personhood turning her into a ghost, an avatar of humiliation, guilt, shame, and yet otherness, the otherness our heroine seems to see as a sort of shadow to her own self, the moon to her sun. Who knows what we might have been capable of if we felt as strongly, or as vacantly, as Leslie Van Houten? The back of the book compares AMERICAN GENIUS to Tristram Shandy, Moby Dick, Gravity's Rainbow. I don't think so, but I can see what George Saunders and Matthew Sharpe jumped overboard in exactly those ways. Like these classic novels, AMERICAN GENIUS plays with time--slowing it down, making it jump hoops, negating it on the one hand while reifying it on the other--the way a prisoner does, marking the days scrawled in charcoal on the wall of his cave or cell. The long sentences with which our narrator marks time will resound in your head every time you try to put down this wonderfully achieved novel, and you'll be imitating Tillman next time you try to open your mouth and explain, just what it is that happened that made you so strange and so bereft.

The magician who appears near the end of this novel reminds the other characters that magic is all about misdirection. That describes the novel's technique as well. Our neurotic narrator obsesses over her skin, and sometimes fabric---the surfaces. But then she'll experience sudden eruptions of painful memory or vivid insight, usually tossed off as asides on every topic from art history to childhood pets. Our narrator (Helen, we eventually learn) complains about her sensitive skin, but what we're really exploring here is a sensitive psyche, a brilliant mind almost afraid of thinking. As the book begins, it's unclear whether she's living in some kind of mental institution or an artists' colony. The fact that we can't immediately tell is an example of the sly dry humor present throughout this beautifully written novel.

There is a reason why I ordered copies for my entire team and all of my mastermind students. My expectations were high for this book and were exceeded by the time I was a couple of chapters into it. Napoleon Hill's wisdom is timeless, and this book brings his early writings, concepts, ideas, and strategies to life in a surprising way; through Gitomer's thoughtful and often brilliant annotations - his insights and recommended actions.I believe Jeffrey Gitomer is one of the best writers on the topic of sales and success, and I've read hundreds of books over the last 20 years. Like his other great books, this one is unique and takes on a BIG task which is to bring Napoleon Hill's strategies into today's modern world. He achieves this spectacularly.Chapter 12, "How to Sell Yourself and Your Services," is worth the 100X the price of the book in my opinion. The lessons in this chapter and throughout the book are short, hard-hitting, and thought-provoking. I normally read fast, yet this book stopped me in my tracks to actually stop and just THINK. I've rarely had so much self-reflection come from one book.I'm appreciative for Gitomer for this book and so much more. The impact he, his books and training have had on me in my personal life and my professional career has been nothing short of amazing. I'm forever indebted to him.Don't just buy the book, buy additional copies for those you care most about. They'll thank you and you will have given them a gift that could change their life.

I have been truly blessed when author, speaker and all round great guy Lee Shelton suggested that I read I’m Okay; You’re Okay. I read it and my life’s direction changed almost instantly. I became an avid reader. Since that day in the early 1980s I have read well over 1000 books and watched or listened to even more on video or tapes. Why do I say this to begin this review of Truthful Living by Jeffrey Gitomer? Glad you asked.Without Shelton’s encouragement I would have never been introduced to the works of Napoleon Hill, Orison Swett Marden, Wallace Wattles, Jim Paluch, Joe Tye, Dr. Tom Hill, Jon Gordon, Kieran Revell and especially Jeffrey Gitomer. I have read every book written by Gitomer as well as several of the other authors mentioned. In fact I have read many of the books more than once. I WILL read Truthful Living more than once, of that you can rest assured! It would be foolish of me to actually write a review of the book. Instead I would simply suggest that you read it and after you do you will understand why I suggested that first you read it, then you should study it, and then buy a copies for the people you care about, especially the youngest of the people you care about who are only now embarking upon their careers. You’ve heard the famous saying, you can bring a horse to water but you can’t make them drink. Here is your chance to bring your favorite horses to the fountain of knowledge from which if they partake of the knowledge will absolutely do no harm but almost assuredly help them achieve the success that everyone seeks.Author Joe Tye asked me if I had a Life’s Mission Statement (Goal) which at the time I did not. Thanks to Joe I created one and have done my best to live by it over the past 30 plus years and I include it here for a reason:To help people to do what they do to do it better! That is one of the reasons I read books, books like Truthful Living. I weed out the books with little value in favor of the books with tremendous value and then share the recommendation to read a book or books with everyone who would take a minute or two to read my recommendations such as this one. By encouraging others to read the books I have read IS helping other people to do what they do to do it better. My recommendation/suggestion to YOU the reader would be:READ THIS BOOK!A word of caution. The book is written in color and if you attempt to read it on a Kindle type reading device in Black and White only as I did, you may have difficulty reading some of the featured material in the book. The same Kindle version read on your computer’s Kindle or your smart phones Kindle is highly recommended because the color is displayed making it much easier to read.Truthful Living is NOT just a book for people in sales; it is for people who are still breathing or in other words, EVERYONE! It would be impossible to read Truthful Living without coming away without many very strong incentives to cause you to “think in a certain way” as Wallace Wattles writes about in his several books. It clearly points out that everyone should have a mental plan outlining a roadmap to define their future as they wish it to be. I came across the following poem, author unknown, that explains why you should read Truthful Living.WHERE ARE YOU GOING?High in the Sierra Mountains lives an old manWho from his hermitage looks down in pityUpon other men of higher mental aspiration. One day he rescued a little group of Swiss mountaineersLost in the mountains’ fastenessesWhen told were they were they exclaimed in disbelief,“But how did we get here?”To which the old hermit replied,“If that question ain’t got no answer attached to it,I ain’t got none that fits.If you is goin’ anywhere in particularUp here, yu’d better figger fust how to get thar.Cuz by jest goin’ afore ya know where yere agoin’Ya can get to a powerful lotta places ya might not wanta be.”As usual, I always ask and answer the same questions whenever I finish reading a book.Who should read it? EVERYONEWould I read it again? ABSOLUTELYWould I buy it as a gift? ABSOLUTELY and already have

I loved Napolean Hill. Have and have read all of his works. Thus, I kind of fell for the fact that old writings had been discovered yada yada. And the irony, I like Jeffrey Gitomer's sales books. He's obviously the real deal. But the combination fell flat on its face for me. So not for me to say if they found some old writings or not but being an old rabid fan of Mr. Hill, it sure doesn't come through for this fan.

This was not your typical book. And for that reason I did find it a bit disjointed and strange sometimes. The material from Jeff was more relatable and the material from Nap Hill was like it was just pieced together. I struggled to find too many pearls of wisdom that I haven't read in other Napoleon Hill books but the investment of time and money was well worth it.

Jeffrey Gitomer holds your hand as you explore the original notes from the lectures of Napoleon Hill. This is an impressive book and I really love Jeffrey's added annotations. This book gets better and better after each chapter too! Very impressed, I plan on reading this book over and over again. I highly recommend this book to any fan of either Jeffrey Gitomer or Napoleon Hill.

Hey Jeffrey, I just recieved my copy in the mail yesterday - digging in hard and fast -Thank you for putting this book together after finding those initial, earlier writings of Napolean Hill - and preserving that legacy. Much appreciated - Daniel / Detroit

The book allows us to be taught the right way, as in a world we live in today. These principal's are for those that want to instill themselves with the skills that have been proven! your move.

All Gitomers books are valuable. Most of his books have very nice expensive paper. But this book is just plain average paper instead of paper glossed with a shiny layer.

“. . . an astounding achievement, both as a literary and photographic work.” - Fangoria“Koudounaris gracefully transcends mere ghastliness and ghoulishness to challenge cultural perceptions of death, both current and centuries old. The result is not only a highly original work of great visual beauty and rigorous scholarship but also a surprisingly intimate and tender meditation on what the author calls 'the dialogue with the dead.'” - Bloomsbury Review“The photos of the skulls alone justify the purchase.” - Talk

I am so happy that I ordered this book. It is full of stunning photography and the binding is very elegant. This was a perfect addition to my collection of books about Ossuaries. Typically these kinds of books are either coffee-table books burdened by mediocre writing and poor scholarship, or textbooks with wonderful historical perspective but few images. The text by Koudounaris entirely worth reading, though the format sacrifices ease of reading for visual appeal. Some of the sites in this book are rarely photographed or written about, so it is really a wonderful resource in addition to a beautiful book for display. It also includes map locations and very clear cross referencing in the appendices. To be honest, the photographs are so beautiful that it would be worth buying for those alone.

A lovely photography book that picks up and goes a bit deeper than Paul Koudounaris' excellent previous book, "Heavenly Bodies" - the images are hypnotic and so full of radiant 'life' and beauty, artistry and veneration, that while being drawn in to the superb imagery one can never forget exactly what we are seeing - the glorification of the inevitable. The book itself is a work of art - heavy, golden decorative pattens adorn the thick covers, while the pages are exquisite glossy heavy bond. At 224 pages, this is a work of love and craftsmanship. And, without many of these images, where would all those Death Metal bands get their album covers?

I wanted a book that would give historical and interesting facts on places of death and our treatment of the dead. That is just what was delivered and more. The photos are large, high quality and provoked a range of emotions from me including shock, dread, awe, curiosity, and the desire to learn more. I agree with another reviewer that, despite its "coffee table" appearance, the information in this book is very well researched. Also, the the material is in-depth without being academic or dense and seems to build on itself to form a chronology of the history/facts covered. Two, perhaps, unexpected consequences of my reading this:1. My acceptance of death as a normal part of being human has already increased as a result of what I have read and I am definitely more open to its discussion.2. I recognize a need for society to demystify death and break down the taboos so as to better prepare ourselves, thus living more deliberately.

Awesome! Anthropoligst, phsychologists and thansthologists galore.! Also very interesting for people intrigued about or researching the reality of death. Very few books on this topic available. Not so good as Memento Mori, but also extraordinary images and text. Try a recently released book from another author, called "Death, a graveside companion".(1st edition). It's TRULLY awesome!!

A really beautiful and substantial book in the hand. This book is less picture heavy and much more literature heavy than most books about the catacombs. If you are looking for an enormous photobook that is MOSTLY photos this is not your best bet. If you want lots of information interspersed with gorgeous photos and drawings its a win.!

This is a remarkable book. It is beautifully produced and manages to span the realms of the coffee table grimoire and the insightful scholarly work. Paul Koudounaris speaks authoritatively and succinctly, revealing a world of life and hope that has been effectively extinguished in modern society. There is an unsettling message that resonates through every page; by marginalizing and concealing our beloved dead, we take some of the vivacity from our own lives. Plus, you get a built-in ribbon bookmark. The Empire of Death will likely change the way you think about death, even if you had a relatively amicable relationship before.

The photos are really what this book is all about - stunning, chilling, perplexing and intriguing glimpses into the burial or preservation practices of centuries past.If you actually "read" the book, there are some issues: very small typeface, a bit frozen and boring in terms of content, and not a robust accompaniment for the incredible photos.I looked through and enjoyed this and then gave it away as a sumptuous gift to a friend.

Littered around Europe are so called Ossuaries where bones arekept either in special niches or arranged in convivial macabrebaroque art. This book is a compendium of such shrines and ahomage to death itself.Paul Koudounaris has documented well and little known CharnelHouses, not to mention he presented it with flair and supplementedwith several pictures.Included in this handsome hardbound book are the famous CapuchinChurch in Palermo,Scwarzenberg Chapel, Waldsassen and Church ofSaint Francis in Portugal. This is highly recommended for those who are Connosieurs of theStrange and those who are not brave enough to cross the thresholdof the said chapels and churches. Dr. Koudounaris has done anexcellent job and give us a free tour of the Realm of the Dead.

I needed a map that included the whole country at a glance. The map is totally useless to me. Why wasn't this information included when I bought the map? Are there any other maps of Venezuela which show the whole country on one side?
