Lake Superior Rocks & Minerals: A Field Guide to the Lake Superior Area by Bob Lynch & Dan Lynch Small size, bright photography, clear descriptions of rocks and minerals and even an entry on "junk" you'll find on a Lake Superior beach ... this handy volume has what rock pickers are looking for when they are looking at Lake Superior rocks and agates. Bob Lynch, owner of Agate City in Two Harbors, Minnesota, and his son, Dan Lynch, make the perfect knowledgeable guides on a tour of lake stones. Besides a general section on rocks and minerals, the pocket-sized book has separate sections on each of the three Lake Superior shore states - Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. It has a quick guide summary to rocks and to rock shops and museums. Fourteen pages are for the agate and its varied Lake Superior version alone. Each entry has information on where to look for particular minerals or agates. The photography, by Dan, makes it easy to identify what you've picked up off the beach. This is a great guide, but the really cool thing is that after just a few sessions of comparing your beach rocks to this book's descriptions, you'll look like an expert yourself when you impress friends and family with your understanding of what you've found. - Konnie LeMay--Connie LeMay"Lake Superior Magazine" (03/23/2009)

About the Author

Dan R. Lynch has a degree in graphic design with emphasis on photography from the University of Minnesota Duluth. But before his love of art and writing came a passion for rocks and minerals, developed during his lifetime growing up in his parents’ rock shop in Two Harbors, Minnesota. Combining the two aspects of his life seemed a natural choice, and he enjoys researching, writing about, and taking photographs of rocks and minerals. Working with his father, Bob Lynch, a respected veteran of Lake Superior’s agate-collecting community, Dan spearheads their series of rock and mineral field guides―definitive guidebooks that help amateurs “decode” the complexities of geology and mineralogy. He also takes special care to ensure that his photographs complement the text and always represent each rock or mineral exactly as it appears in person. He currently lives in Madison, Wisconsin, with his wife, Julie, where he works as a writer and photographer.

Informative little book but extremely generalized on localities. Used virtually the same general maps for every type of rock. For those with limited time you don’t really have any idea on where to narrow your search of specific types of rocks. Nice photos and good companion to a few other Lake Superior rock hunting guides.

What an excellent book! I had no idea that each and every stone had a name - had never thought about it. (!) Although I was primarily interested in agates, which the book covered admirably, it was a surprise how interesting all of the minerals covered can be. If you've ever walked with a kid who picks up "pretty rocks" and wants to know what kind it is - this is the book for you! Although the geographical range covered is somewhat limited, my guess is that the terrific identifying information and photos will be valuable just about anywhere.I've purchased several books on rocks, minerals and beginning geology, but this book - by far - has the most useful information of any I've seen.

Now this is the pocket guide one should have on the beaches of Gitche Gumee! It includes all 3 states, lists beaches, rock shops and even museums. The collection of excellent photos and categories are well organized and clearly described.

We have enjoyed rock hunting Lake Superior rocks at Whitefish Point on Lake Superior outside Paradise, Michigan many times since purchasing this book. The excellent color of Lake Superior rocks is due to the extreme cold temperatures of this Great Lake in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

This book has a lot of nice color photos of all the stones you will find on the beach of Lake Superior and surrounding region. You'll see photos of stones you may have found but did not know what they were. It differentiates the different types of agates which I found useful since this is what I primarily search for. It is small enough to fit nicely in a backpack or large pocket. I highly recommend this as a field book.

Great book. I've enjoyed learning about the rocks I've come across in my travels around Lake Superior. It's full of great descriptions and pictures.

This guide is exactly what I was looking for. We collected many rocks while on a trip to the UP and I was able to identify all of them with this book, plus it showed me other important rocks/minerals that I overlooked. It has also helped me ID rocks that I found all the way to central Wisconsin. The pictures and explanations are perfect, I carry it with me all the time.

Very helpful resource with lots of information

There is a lot of information here and the author has done a great job of research to bring this book about and help the reader somewhat understand the long history of this area. I am sure it was not an easy task just as it is not easy to review. The subtitle describing this book as a battle between the U.S. and Great Britain for control of the modern Middle East is essentially what this work is all about , and this is, I believe, much more important than much of the individual detailsIt also prompted me to print a map of the area and fill in some information more current of populations, GDP, and square miles. One thing is for certain is that Israel is sitting in the middle of a hornet's nest, and no longer enjoys being the underdog favorite. The U.S. and Britain have for a long time enjoyed a "special relationship." This term is a bit misleading and I will give a quick summary of why Britain was not always happy. Starting with the Atlantic Charter, signed by both countries, there was a sticky problem in that FDR felt that colonialism was not a good thing and needed to end. Churchill was beside himself with this proposal, but needed the help of the U.S.During the war, and prior to the U.S. involvement, England was spending so much money that the country was essentially going broke. WSC was constantly asking, or begging for relief before their entire Treasury was a vestige of the past. To make matters worse, FDR also told Churchill that they should allow independence for India, which the British had controlled since the last days of Elizabeth I.While Churchill was greatly relieved when America entered the war, he became more disappointed when Stalin became more important for obvious reasons, and WSC no longer had the upper hand. By 1944. at Bretton Woods the UK was roughly handled by the US as to the new international monetary system. After the war concluded, Britain was given control of certain areas in the Middle East. They pulled their usual tricks that enraged the very people they were to help. They stifled the influx of Jews into Palestine, and before long, Jewish terrorists were killing British officers. It all went downhill from there. The CIA was able to manage a regime change in Iran, which was later discovered by the Iranians , but one of the most significant developments was the existing known oil reserves while more and more reserves were uncovered. Britain desperately needed this revenue, and the U.S. was determined that they would not have it. In 1956, the crisis of the Suez Canal was a total Allied failure, and the U.S. would not back Israel, France, and England in their attempt to control the canal. The British were eventually ran out of the Middle East, and the Arab people of these nations united in opposition to the U.S. as well. Now, Israel is almost universally condemned by their treatment of the Palestinians, and 9 million people in Israel are confronted by well more than 200 million people firmly against them.I think I know how this will play out. It is not going to be pretty.

This is the third book by James Barr regarding the Middle East. It is informative, telling a tale that gets very little coverage. The story Barr tells is a complicated one. There are many names to follow. But, anyone interested in current events in the Middle East today should read this book only to learn what came before.

well written history

*I received an electronic galley from netgalley.com in exchange for a review*Lords of the Desert may be a hard book for a modern American audience considering that the United States and Great Britain have been fast international allies for centuries. But Lords of the Desert chronicles the thirty years of Middle Eastern relations between the United States and Great Britain from the late 1940s to the 1970s. Sometimes, the countries collaborated, sometimes they broke with each other, and occasionally they appear to have sabotaged each other. What could account for such a complicated relationship?Great Britain was the greatest empire modern times had ever seen, but war had exhausted and bankrupted it. The United States viewed itself as the new global power following WW2 victory and sought to use that influence. It turns out that empire does not yield to rational human thought, which led to a tug of war of sorts between a Great Britain desperate to retain something of empire and their place in global affairs and the United States who had their own version of the Middle East that didn’t always square with their British “friends.”It’s an action packed narrative that belongs in the library of any individual who wants to know how the Middle East became what it is today.

James Barr in Lords of the Desert describes Anglo-American relations in the Middle East “from 1942, until Britain’s exit from the Gulf in 1971.” Barr is a British academic and provides a British perspective. He is less good at explaining U.S. strategy. Both countries did co-operate to oust Iran’s prime minister Mohammad Mosaddeq in 1953 and, 50 years later, to remove Saddam Hussein in Iraq, however, these examples are the exception. Barr concludes that “Britain and the United States were invariably competitors in the Middle East, and often outright rivals.”Britain had played a major role in defeating the Ottoman Empire in WW1 and captured Jerusalem, Damascus and Baghdad during the war. Between 1920 and 1945 it was the dominant power in the Middle East. The book focuses on a period after WW2 when Britain was in rapid decline and the U.S. became the dominant power in the region. The U.S. has often been in denial about its global ambitions. Professor John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago has done a good job elsewhere explaining how U.S. foreign policy has evolved over time. Barr seems unfamiliar with the realities of American foreign policy doublethink. One of FDR’s main war aims was to break up the British Empire and spread liberal democracy, as Benn Steil’s book “The Battle of Bretton Woods” points out. However, FDR’s successors became concerned about the spread of communism in the late 1940s and concluded that the U.S. needed allies to turn back the tide. It was feared that Europe and Asia could be overrun and fall to communism. Suddenly, the U.S. began supporting France's efforts to hang onto Vietnam when previously its policy had been to oppose European colonialism.Barr describes the various post-war crises in the Middle East. Britain had ruled Palestine under a League of Nations mandate since the break-up of the Ottoman Empire in 1921. Britain had issued the Balfour Declaration in 1917 and had pushed for a Jewish homeland in Palestine. It initially did nothing to curb Jewish immigration but as the numbers increased the Palestinians began to violently object. By 1948 Palestine was on the verge of civil war and British soldiers were being killed by both sides. The U.S. was increasingly sympathetic to the Zionist cause in the aftermath of the Holocaust. Harry Truman quipped that Jewish voters far outnumbered Arabs. The U.S. had criticized Britain for its decision to limit Jewish immigration after the war. Barr claims the U.S. was shocked when Britain suddenly walked out of Palestine in 1948 and handed the problem over to the U.N.Churchill became prime minister again in 1951 and had hoped for a partnership with the U.S. According to Barr, Truman was rude to Churchill when they met in 1952. Truman’s advisers had decided that Churchill was over the hill and needed to know his place. However, in 1953, the CIA-MI6 undertook a joint operation to overthrow the Iranian nationalist prime minister Mohammad Mossadegh. For Britain, it started out as a dispute over oil. A predecessor company of BP, called Anglo-Iranian, owned oil reserves in Iran. The socialist Mossadegh wanted a greater share of the profits for Iran. Britain persuaded the U.S. that the democratically elected Mossadegh was a communist and the CIA carried out the coup. In the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries, Senator Bernie Sanders repeatedly praised Mossadegh's "secular, democratic government" and condemned the CIA.Popular nationalist movements were emerging throughout the world after WW2 and the pre-war imperial war powers were exiting the global stage. Britain’s traditional concern in the Middle East had been to protect the Suez Canal which it jointly owned with France. It had installed puppet regimes in Egypt since the late 19th century to keep the peace. The canal was Britain’s route to India and its colonies in Asia. After India was granted independence in 1948, Britain's main concern shifted to maintaining access to Middle Eastern oil. Two-thirds of Britain and France’s oil came through the canal, if it was blocked or the Soviets controlled it, it would be a disaster for Western Europe.Relations between Britain and the U.S. reached a low point over the decision by Britain, France and Israel to invade Egypt and seize the Suez Canal in 1956. The Egyptian government had nationalized the canal. Israeli intelligence believed that Egypt was about to attack Israel in 1956. The Suez invasion was originally a French-Israeli venture, which the British joined later. Egypt’s leader Gamal Abdel Nasser, had taken power in a coup in 1952 and was ambitious. He wanted to unite the countries of the Arab world under his leadership. Nasser was the mastermind behind the attack on Israel in the Six Day War in 1967. He was also a Soviet ally. Britain and France were worried that Nasser might block Europe’s oil supplies. Nasser was also stirring up trouble in France's North African colonies, with his calls for Arab nationalism.Britain, France and Israel had good reasons for the invasion. However, Eisenhower believed that he could do business with Nasser and he was keen to befriend the Arabs. Ike sided with Egypt and the Soviets. The U.S. forced Britain, France and Israel to withdraw. German Chancellor Adenauer supported France and Britain and was appalled by the action taken by Eisenhower. The president expected gratitude from the Arab world, instead, Nasser got the credit and became an Arab hero. Nasser emerged from the conflict much stronger and more hostile to American interests.Michael Doran in his book “Ike's Gamble” claims that Eisenhower told Nixon and Israel's ambassador to the U.S. that Suez had been his greatest foreign policy blunder. He grew to believe he picked the wrong side. Eisenhower also believed that the refusal of Britain and France to help in Vietnam was their revenge for Suez. Britain and France gradually disengaged from the Middle East. Germany and France signed the Treaty of Rome in 1957 and concluded that the only way to have influence and avoid being bullied by the U.S. was to work together. Together, they created the E.U. France has tried to keep the U.S. at arm's length ever since Suez. President Macron recently proclaimed that the EU needed an army to protect itself from Russia, China, and the U.S.By the 1940s Britain's empire had become a loss-making enterprise. The costs outweighed the economic benefits so Britain slowly wound up its empire. In 1968, while the U.S. was stuck in Vietnam, Prime Minister Wilson announced that Britain was closing its last Middle Eastern base in Yemen. The U.S. was annoyed at the withdrawal. According to Barr, Secretary of State Rusk told Wilson’s chief diplomat: “For God’s sake, act like Britain.” Barr claims that the U.S. had been trying to push Britain out of the Middle East since the 1940s. This incident seems to sum up a schizophrenic relationship. The U.S. had wanted to control the Middle East and viewed Britain as a rival, but it also seemed to miss not having it around.

Pourteau's entry into the Legacy Fleet universe continues the emphasis on Addison Halsey, but gives another strong woman, IDF Captain Samantha Avery, her own place as co-protagonist.For "Sam" Avery, command of the IDF Avenger comes with downsides, one known (her CAG or Carrier Attack Group commander is one Laz Scollard, ex-pirate), and one unknown, a secretive assassin hidden aboard, determined to kill her. For Halsey, the promotion to captain of IDF Invincible means she must operate under the direction of a decidedly un-strategic station commander. These issues turn out to be minor when considered against the vastly-expanded Swarm fleet they will be fighting. As in Book 1, we also see Swarm-infected human traitors, and political maneuvers that may, or may not, be generated by such treachery. The "Integrated Defense Force" of IDF is still in name only, since all the ships now in the force were once UEF resources. Perhaps the Russians will eventually step up to help. Maybe the Chinese will throw off their Swarm-generated abstention and send aid.Meanwhile, Addie and Sam, along with Captain Noah Preble of IDF Independence, and the rehabilitated Laz Scollard, will have their hands full fighting the stolid idiocy of their local commander and the secret treachery of a hidden enemy, as well as the ships of the Swarm. The nail-biting action never lets up, especially when it becomes obvious that the Swarm has learned from their previous battles with Halsey, et. al.And these bugs are not stupid.Liner Note: There is a major undropped shoe in the story. A crisis delayed near the start of the novel is left still resolved at the end of Avenger. But don't let that stop you from reading the book: it will probably be an opening issue in Book 3. Or maybe Book 4.

In undertaking to write a continuation of a previous story written by someone else most authors would be hard pressed to keep it from becoming repetitious - a boring extension of the SOS. Well this author managed the opposite in creating a brilliant sequel that not only compliments the original work but also makes for a riveting story that begs for more.

Well, like many, my introduction to the Swarm series was well in the future that made maddening references to the past. I am pleased that Nick made it possible for other authors to help out creating this universe. This book was well written and provides a very nice piece of the Swarm universe. And now after reading this book I know that there is more coming, both in the past and future. I will have to see how many of the hints I think I picked up play out in the past and future. Can't wait.

This is a great addition to the Legacy Fleet universe. Chris Porteau picks up where David Bruns' Invincible left off, and continues the story of Samantha Avery, Addison Halsey, and some of the other characters, as well as introducing some fantastic new ones. The action is fast-paced, and there's plenty of space action and intrigue, just like in Nick Webb's books. Highly recommended.

Chris Pourteau continues the Legacy Fleet series with an action-packed, fast paced plot. The heroine is an Academy graduate, and more than capable of commanding her crew during the Swarm War. There is a traitor in her midst, and now she battles both the bugs and the person who is trying to sabotage her efforts. I really came to love the characters in this book, and I'm never disappointed in a Pourteau story.

A dance upon the cosmos in human space is interrupted when a unknown group of aliens unresponsive to pleasant hails tap one of Earths space force upon their figurative shoulder. To holds ones breath anticipating the reply is no longer an option when green beams of lifetaking force lance among your comrades as a reply. Can a coalition of former enemies standfast?Irregardless, the path to balance the scales has already been paved with fearless comrades. Waste not their sacrifices. Remember the toast of victory to them all. SHIP, COMRADES, SELF last.

In addition to being a very exciting and entertaining story it was an excellent portrayal of the reality of politics and greed. Of people who are only concerned with themselves, and humanity be damned. Too true throughout our species entire history. If you're a fan of space opera you're gonna love this.

I've always enjoyed how multiple authors can take the same story and continue it through different books. Chris adds to this story with Avenger. Dives deeper into the characters with a nice added dose of humour. You won't be disappointed.
