A good book on the Zone System. A great deal of pratical information on how to achieve previsualation. A good addition to your photo library if you already have the Ansel Adams books.

I bought this book to fill the gaps that the AA books left in my mind. The first chapters are really interesting and you'll learn about the Zone System aplied to printing and papers.But then, I think it was to much for me when it started to get into drawing curves and testing materials.That's the reason why I left the zone system behind. I'd rather take`pictures in the steet than draw lines and read neg densities at home.If you want to be a ZoneSystem photographer, then this book will guide you through the real process that AA executed.

This book is a geek's dream filled with detailed explanations of the Zone System from a sensitometrist's perspective. Here's the problem : the zone system, as formulated by Ansel Adams is based on a *visual* scale of tonalities & texture (the latter of which sensitometry ignores). You, and your viewers will use eyes, not a densitometer, to appreciate the qualities of your print, so why would anyone use anything else to fine tune your film speed & exposure times ? I'm not against all testing to speed up the process, but if ultimately you care about the print (and not numbers), I highly recommend that you just use your eyes to determine film speed & development times and just go out shooting. Here's one way to do it :- place your camera in front of a wall, meter it and place it in Zone I. Shoot at different ASAs. Develop the negatives giving it some time you can find online (it's not really important). The negative with highest ASA that has thin, but clearly visible density is your exposure index. Done.- Figure out the maximum black time using your enlarger and paper you plan on using for printing (remember, that's how your viewers will see your prints !). [It's the minimum amount of time for a negative that hasn't been exposed (zone 0) to print as pure black. Use a nb 2 (medium contrast filter)- Now shoot a textured wall, placing it in all zones (0 to X) and develop your negatives giving the same time you used above.- Make a contact print of those negatives at the maximum black time.- Evaluate how each zone looks like compared to the zone scale defined by Ansel Adams. Look at the tonality, but also the texture. In particular, pay attention to ZIII and ZVII to make sure they show full texture detail.- If your upper zones look too dark, or you have full detail beyond ZVII, you need to increase your development time. If instead your upper zones go to pure white too quickly, you need to decrease your development time. Repeat the textured wall test until they print as they should according to the scale defined by Ansel. Once you get that, that's your N development time.- Follow a similar testing procedure to figure out your N+1, N-1 times etc ... you get the idea.Other than that, go out and shoot !!!! take real photos. You'll find that you may have to make small tweaks in either development times or exposure index, but honestly, the last thing you need is spending time in a lab. It won't help you make better photos.

The title of this book is misleading, when i bought this book, i thought that it would be about applying the zone sysyem in an everyday way, how ever this book only talks about the zone system, and how to use it. however it doesnt go beyond any other zone system books.

I ordered a book in August and have been waiting for the book for several months. I received an e-mail that said the book I ordered would be delivered on Sept.1, however, I have never received the book and I was charged for book in later August. I wrote down e-mail and sent to seller through Amazon.com twice, however, no one responded me. In later Sept., I sent an e-mail to seller directly, but still, no one responded me. It is my first bad experience from online shopping. I'm very upset now. I need get my money back!

In the 1970's when I was grad student I read all Ansel Adams how to books (The Camera, The Negative, The Print...etc ) several times and while they were the best books available at the time....I wish I'd own this One Book (had it been available) If you are a film photographer and want a clear understanding of what happens before and after you click the shutter, this is the book for you. I've read quite a few books on the subject and this is one of the best, if not the best! If you shoot B&W film you need to buy this book. Warning this is not a book for the average beginner, but it's written in a way that explains some rather complex ideas very clearly. Also, this is a book for film photography, but even so....a good technical understanding for analog photography can only improve your approach to and understanding of the digital world.

The late Phil Davis was a well known teacher and innovator. In this book Mr. Davis details a complete system that one can use in order to understand the basics of exposure, and how to test film and printing paper so as to create negatives that are exactly matched to ones enlarging or contact printing paper. However, the book is way beyond a simple "how to manual". In essence, Mr. Davis expands on the zone system, and creates an easily understood basis for black and white photography. He explains the basic science behind correct exposure and printing, and creates an easily understood exposure "system" that one can return to again and again. One cannot easily summarize all of the nuggest of knowledge and information that are contained in this book. Mr. Davis makes the zone system more accessible and understandable. There are few books that one would list as "absolutely necessary" reading for anyone contemplating the creation of black and white images on film. Beyond the Zone System is a book that should be dog-eared, read and reread, until the concepts of exposure and development become-excuse the pun-ingrained. The information is presented in a clear fashion with numerous easily understood graphs and images that make the concepts easily understood. To my mind, Beyond the Zone System stands aside Anselm Adams books as the BEST books for photographers seeking to learn how understanding that the best images must start with an understanding of one's materials.

Amazing work. Having been a peacepkeer in Cyprus I felt I should read this book. A lot of people had adviced me to read it while being on the Island.The story is shocking, and it tells us about the mistake big powers committed on Cyprus. How they misled the Cypriot people, who fought for the enosis to Greece, just to receive a sham and limited "independence".The book unveils the mismanagement of the british government on Cyprus, since PM Anthony Eden's policies to encourage turkish claims just to weaken the greek stance.

I couldn't find any history of the island, so I bought this product. It is a page turner, and I believe it is the truth, in spite of the nay sayers in some of the reviews - because it makes logical sense all the way through. It is a great work and should be read by any visitor to the island

Cypriots are very political. this book is essential reading for anyone who engages in a conversation with a Cypriot as all they really want to talk about is politics.on reading this book you will realise that this island and its peoples have been pawns in an international game and have suffered the consequences.It is hard to imagine the island ever being reunited or the victims in either community ever gaining an equitable solution.

The way history revolves around small nations, and island nations for that matter, reminds us of the way little orphans wander about in the cold streets in the winter, exposed to the elements of nature and the voracity of the beasts...

The book reveals the behind the scenes activities and points of view regarding Cyprus from the beginning of the Lyndon Johnson presidency. Moreover, it reveals the secrecy and unlawful power yielded by Henry Kissinger in the years of 1973 and 1974 regarding the division of Cyprus in 1974.Excellent book and very detailed.

Somewhat revealed how larger governments can manipulate situations to achieve an outcome that fits there political agenda, seems no different to what we see today forty years later..

They are, understandably, monuments of Western civilization with the result being that the libraries are primarily European with some American examples. Each is covered in sufficient detail with excellent color photography. It is truly a delightful coffee-table book.

This hefty coffee table book presents the origins of some of the most distinguished and beautiful libraries around the world. There are only 23 libraries featured in here but I found the selection to be well-made, though it focuses almost exclusively on the great libraries in Europe, one in Russia, and several from the United States.Bibliophiles will particularly appreciate the beautiful color photographs of these amazing repositories of knowledge and learning, showcasing old structures that reflect Gothic and other styles. Aside from the photographs (most of which are full page), the book also details each library's history. I was fascinated to learn how the renowned Bodleain Library in Oxford came about. Up until 1598, Oxford University did not really have a library to speak of, due largely to mismanagement, censorship in the form of purging of any text with references to Catholicism, and more. I buy a lot of books like this for specific room purposes. We were going to build, bought instead and are remodeling. Most books of this kind I expect to be impressed by, if I'm lucky, 50% of what's presented. Not so with this book. I was extremely impressed with nearly every library depicted with the exception of the US libraries (hmmm, I wonder what that says about us?). Of course, with monarchies who can divert monies wherever they like, this is the result you'll find in European / Eastern block libraries. Regardless of my snarky attitude, the results of what can be done with unlimited architecture, fine artisans and time is very well represented here. I also bought the book for my mother who is a librarian and she was equally impressed. If you like libraries and their architecture, I feel certain you will enjoy this book.

SOME OF the most beautiful libraries, indeed. Don't worry about what isn't here and just enjoy what is. The pics are large (often a spread) so you don't miss out on wonderful details. A few locations seemed like buildings ornamented with books vs "defined by" but ok, it's still great eye candy. The only gripe I will put front and center is omission of Coimbra (both historical and breathtakingly beautiful) -- perhaps it's been too "done".

As written in the introduction,"One must spend hours upon hours, and days upondays in the cocoon of a great library in orderto understand and love the cozy isolation that itcan provide. This is a well constructed book and it spans a vast area of sailing - maybe too vast because necessarily some treatment is general.If you are looking for something that is class specific this book is still very helpful but may not yield all the answers needed.I would support a subscription version where bye updates and new chapters are added from time to time.Overall though I am very pleased with the book. Easy to read and full of very useful advice and understanding. Good value.

This book covers common sail materials and manufacturing techniques. It describes the advantages and disadvantages of each material. Advanced sail trim techniques are also covered. The single most useful and complete book on sail trim and sail materials I have come across. I do own many books on this subject and "Maximum Sail Power" is by far the best!

First I must say that I love my Kindle HD8. This is my second device. As with everything, technology changes. Though a User Manual comes built-in, I am a person who wants more information. It, I believe, has answered a problem for me with regard to "side loading", and discussion of the "apk file" which I've seen online discussions about but only for other models. Also found corroboration for another Original Kindle problem involving charging problems. I like this book, and am really glad I found it. Better yet, it was free.

This is one of the worst instruction books I have worked with. My wife received the unit as a gift and we wanted to know how to use it. I have worked with computers for years and have been able to get along, even though I am still challenged in many ways. I have had a number of instruction books over the years. This is one of the least helpful I have received. It seems to be a waste of money. There is little explanation concerning the things a person wants to find. I cannot believe that you would sell it as a sufficient instruction book.

There are some free versions of older translations available on the web, but I found these dense, archaic and difficult to read. But this very plain translation is extremely clear and makes the text read like a modern piece. In fact, after my first reading I felt like I had discovered an obscure Italo Calvino novel, and I was very impressed. The characters are engaging, the imagery stark and lovely, in all ways this is a real surprise given that it's a 17th century German alchemical tract. A certain amount of background in esoteric and alchemical literature will help you along here, but the accompanying interpretative text at the end is informative. The scholar here is very good at keeping the reading closely anchored to the structure and the spirit of the piece, avoiding the common error in esoteric interpretation where a modern scholar imposes a pre-existent program on an antique source. I felt like I really got close to the original author's intent after reading the whole book. So, the primary text is excellent, and the scholarly accompaniment is equally useful and pleasing. If you are an esoteric scholar or enthusiast, this edition is a must have.

When I was a teenager I used to correspond with Mr.McLean about the Great Work and its mysteries. His levity.com website was the most informative source of information of its kind that I could find in the late 90's. Now many years later, imagine my surprise when I was recommended a Magnus Opus edition of the Chymical Wedding!! I had always dreamed of owning a set of these books and had all but forgotten about them. Indeed these are the best books on these subjects I can find and I heartily recommend them to anyone one!

Very interesting book. Must have for anyone studying archaic/hidden knowledge. Story definitely seems to be an allegory, but its true meaning renains hidden.

The Alchemical Wedding is beautiful, but the commentary is extremely helpful in understanding the layers upon layers that are in this book. I learned a lot reading this.

I purchased this book from a friend's recommendation and I am very pleased that I did. I found the rich symbolism very intriguing and the allegory is translated well as it reads smoothly. The tale moves along quickly and the visual images that arose from it's words were a fantastical treat, yet symbolizing real spiritual processes. It has been almost a year since I have first read it and I find that I keep the book very close as I fondly refer to it upon new spiritual discoveries of my own. It is a book that I will pass down to my children when they are ready for this magical journey of alchemical work.
