Review

Praise for The Lost Education of Horace Tate:“As readers discover Tate’s place in history, they’ll also enjoy reading about Martin Luther King Jr., W.E.B. DuBois and other activists portrayed in rarely seen moments.” —BookPage ★ “Walker’s extensively documented work is a much-needed corrective contextualizing the landscape of school desegregation; required reading for those interested in the past, present, and future of education of African American children.” —Library Jounal (Starred Review) “Quotes, anecdotes, archival photos, and other primary sources document the relentless battle for equality for southern schools, resulting in victories that affected education across America. Historical background provides context, and personal insights underscore the realities, dangers, conflicts, and triumphs. Readers follow Tate as he progresses from observer to organizer to leader, eventually becoming an example for a new generation of activists. Both education and civil-rights scholars will appreciate Walker’s new insights.” —Booklist ★ “This well-told and inspiring tale, with its rarely discussed angle on the school segregation fight, will draw in readers interested in meaningful work and activism, or just a well-told tale.” —Publisher Weekly (Starred Review) “[A] new perspective on segregated schooling and education reform in the South. . . . A fresh, well-documented study of the complex struggle for equality in education.” —Kirkus Reviews “A more conscientious torchbearer of the history of black educators in America you will not find. Vanessa Siddle Walker is a brilliant thinker, a teacher’s teacher, and a sage storyteller. Her words illuminate the passion, the tragedy, and the inventiveness behind the struggle for equality in the South.” —Lisa Delpit, bestselling author of Other People’s Children “Walker compels us to see that the main struggle for educational equality unfolds off stage. This subterranean process, reproduced over generations, transmitted advocacy that made, remade, and ultimately overturned Jim Crow from the bottom up. This is a passionate, original, and brilliant study of how black educators navigated racially segregated schooling.” —James D. Anderson, dean of the College of Education, University of Illinois “In an era when policymakers are quick to shutter urban public schools and fire their black teachers in the name of competition, Walker’s incisive scholarship on the brilliance and dedication of the black educators discarded during the school desegregation era requires us to confront the full cost to our nation of racialized policies that erase committed professionals because of the color of their skin.” —Amy Stuart Wells, professor of sociology and education, Teachers College, Columbia University “A beautiful story, a powerful life, and an essential read.” —Gloria Ladson-Billings, professor of urban education, University of Wisconsin-Madison and author of The DreamKeepers “African American teachers intentionally operated outside the public eye to achieve justice during Jim Crow; so much so, that their bravery has been forgotten. The writing is suspenseful. The story is tragic. Yet it provides practical lessons about the critical work of educators in times of civil unrest.” —Jarvis R. Givens, assistant professor, Harvard Graduate School of Education “Meticulous in its historical detail and compelling in its narrative. . . . It is both a tragic tale, and a cautionary one for those who continue the struggle today. Well worth reading!” —Beverly Daniel Tatum, author of Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? Praise for Vanessa Siddle Walker's Their Highest Potential: “A compelling story.” —Journal of American History “Excellent.” —MultiCultural Review “This is a first-rate book and a very moving story.” —James D. Anderson, author of The Education of Blacks in the South “[A] must read . . .” —Gloria Ladson-Billings, University of Wisconsin-Madison Praise for Vanessa Siddle Walker's Race-ing Moral Formation: “Groundbreaking and riveting . . . [A]n essential book.” —Andrew Garrod, Dartmouth College

I have learned so much from this amazingly detailed social history. I thought I was pretty well educated on racial affairs in the South, but it turns out I had just skimmed the surface. The discipline, care, and determination that black educators brought to Georgia in the first seven or so decades of the 20th century make for a remarkable story. They encountered such terrible conditions, very few resources, and deep disdain, stonewalling, and hatred from the whites in charge of the state's education systems. They developed workarounds, strategies, and collaborations to do their best for black children. Indeed, they created a vast and powerful underground network to resist being absorbed and made voiceless, and jobless, by the white power structure. All Georgians owe these men and women a great debt. The struggle for quality education and equal opportunity goes on, but the quiet heroes of this book made incredible contributions. Horace Tate was one such educator who went on to become a powerful advocate for equal educational opportunity. The author spent years talking with him and studying his extensive archives. I can't wait to have a discussion group willing to tackle this deeply informative and thought-provoking book.

I am so grateful to the author for piecing together this account of the way Horace Tate, his predecessors and contemporaries fought to obtain the education that the Negro children of Georgia and other Southern states deserved under the Constitution. I was deeply saddened by the overt prejudice and discriminatory actions of the white majority and I hope in coming years we can ameliorate their dire effects.

The years and effort it took to obtain positive educational objectives for many and the effort of a few to prevent and in their ignorance, unable to apprehend the future result of an under educated populous.

Beautifully written. I saw history of my home town, Fort Valley, GA, and my alma mater, FVSU. I was also neighbors or knew some of the people in the book.

Excellent and detailed account of African American educators fight for equitable education for black children and how that pursuit was distorted in the implementation of “integration.” Dr. Tate is heroic as were all of those unnamed black teachers who quietly participated in this struggle.

Why is the Kindle edition of this book over $10 more than the hardback version?

Godsgrave is a true work of art! For me this does not suffer from the sophomore slump instead it takes everything that made Nevernight brilliant and capitalizes on that to make a worthy and downright fantastic continuation! Godsgrave picks up 8 months after the closing events of Nevernight and we discover Mia has a new destination, the Collegium. One thing I loved about Nevernight was the storytelling and Kristoff keeps it up. The book itself is split into 3 parts and I absolutely love how part 1 tells the story of here we are now but let me also tell you how we got to now, this is told through flashbacks. To me it is never hard to follow the past and present story lines because each one is very unique. I also love how the flashbacks do not overstay their welcome, it has a precise story line and ends.As for the present story and plot, Godsgrave amps up all the action and drama by 100. Kristoff writes some of the best action scenes ever, period. They are gripping, exhilarating, and downright gruesome. Every action scene is vivid and well detailed and that is all thanks to Kristoff's incredible writing style. Now the plot stays it's course from Nevernight, we are still after those that ruined Mia's life, however we now join a Collegium rather then a school for assassin's. Man did I love the Collegium in this book! The new characters were all fleshed out, some likeable some not so likeable. However I do have to tell myself when it comes to Jay Kristoff books I really need to not get so attached to the characters because well you will just have to read the book to find out. The new characters add a fresh new feel to the book to the point that we get to see a more softer side to Mia that we really didn't get to see in the first book, so I appreciated that. Seeing a softer side to Mia really showed some great character development and there definitely was quite a bit of character development throughout this book. We also see some old faces return in Godsgrave which was exciting and bloody shocking (I AM LOOKING AT YOU CLIFFHANGER)! The Collegium is also where we get to see all the action take place. Like I said before these action sequences were epic. They all weren't the same either and what I mean by that is, we didn't have just big blood bath battles. Like a true Colosseum in Rome, their were games, chariot races, and of course blood baths.Last but not least I want to talk about the world a little bit. In Nevernight we only peak at the world of Itreya. In Godgrave we get a whole new perspective of this grand world Kristoff has created for us. We get to see loads more of the city of Godsgrave itself but also we travel to new corners of Itreya. I am hoping this world building and exploration continues in the grand finale of the Nevernight chronicles. All in All Godsgrave was everything I wanted and more and I cannot wait to finally get my hands on the conclusion, hopefully next year. With this book Jay Kristoff has definitely earned the title of auto-buy author in my books and I cannot wait for all the stories Jay has in store for me!!!

I was very excited to read this second installment and it didn't disappoint. Things I liked:- Mia is still this tough as nails assassin who doesn't hesitate to kill but doesn't come off as cold hearted. I do have to say that this book shows Mia being a bit more vulnerable than the first.- I loved the gladiator aspect of the book. I found it completely engaging and enthralling and it definitely had ( and kept) my attention.- I loved all the new characters we were introduced to!Things I didn't like as much:- the footnotes! I've mentioned before (and this is what kept me from giving the first book a 5 star rating) that I hate footnotes in books as it takes you out of the story so completely and doesn't add anything to the plot. I will admit though that this sequel has far far less footnotes than the first book so I really appreciated that.- *SPOILER* I really didn't like how the author used the trope of characters we thought were dead but actually aren't. This actually applies to more than one character in this sequel and I wish it wasn't used because it honestly had me rolling my eyes and thinking 'oh of course this character is still alive how NOT shocking'.Both of these points are still minor things and I have to say I did really love this graphic, explicit addition to the nevernight series.

When I finished "Nevernight," I immediately sent an e-mail to the publisher basically begging them for a copy of "Godsgrave." I think I used the word desperate in my e-mail. I didn't hear anything back and thought I was going to die from need for the second book in the The "Nevernight" Chronicles. Imagine my PURE GLEE when "Godsgrave" was dropped onto my doorstep (aka my desk at work) by an angel (aka the mailman). I couldn't wait to read it. This book took me stinking forever to get through due to life and other similar distracting things, but it was SO VERY WORTH IT.4 Reasons I loved Godsgrave (and why you'll love it to):1. Like "Nevernight," "Godsgrave" follows no rules. Kristoff blends different fantasy worlds, real-life cultures, and sci-fi-like settings to create an entirely unique world. As readers, we have grown to expect certain things of "fantasy" and "sci-fi." Kristoff smashes those boundaries so that, as a reader, you don't know what the hell you're reading (in a good way, I promise). I can't even describe these books to people, because I feel like I have to use so many adjectives. They're truly their own thing. And that, my friends, is pretty damn impressive.2. DAMNIT THESE CHARACTERS ARE SO STINKING GOOD. I'm getting all giddy thinking about how many characters I hated, then loved, hated again, then finally loved. Kristoff takes you on a whirlwind of emotions as you read through these characters interactions, and you don't know who you can and can't trust (sometimes you're even left questioning our main character, Mia).3. The authentic-AF relationship. I won't spoil much about it. But it's FANTASTIC.4. The bad-ass battles!!!!!!! I can't add enough exclamation points to this. There is a massive gladiator-esque tournament going on for the majority of this book, and it's gory, disturbing, heart-wrenching, and AMAZING. I was tense through so much of this book. The bottom line: This book is a raunchy and violent rule-breaker. Don't read this series because you think you know what to expect. Read this book to be uncomfortable, have your heart ripped out of your chest, and jump for joy when you find a new, completely unexpected favorite.
